Taro Kajiura and his friends from a research group at Tonan University embarked on a trip to Ikishima Island in order to pursue the origins about Princess Kannon. At the same time, the villagers of Ikishima were holding an annual festival in which outsiders were forbidden to participate in for over 400 years. The consequences for breaking that tradition were much more severe that any of them had imagined...

KONO SHIMA NI WA MIDARA DE JAAKU NA MONO GA SUMU review
Since this is the first review on this manga, I thought I'd introduce you, the potential reader, to its theme, tone and mood rather than focusing on specific areas and critiquing them.
The manga begins in a modern day setting where a group of college students are led by their classmate to the island she comes from. Now of course, this island is not what it looks like, with the sidelong glances of the hosts and the simmering mood that is present. This mood culminates in a hunt for "intruderss" (the college students) who are not allowed to witness the "ceremony" of the island. I'll leave the rest for you to find out but it's fair to say that the story goes down a dark path and over the duration of the manga (so far) it continues to decline into even darker themes. Finally, to wrap up this review, I'd like to focus on Tarou, the protagonist of the story, who is delightfully explored over the duration of the manga so far. His descent towards madness is delightfully entertaining and it's interesting to see what lengths he'll go to in order to achieve his goals, something which many mangas fail to encapture. Overall, this manga is not a masterpiece and neither is it spectacular. It is a good read with a plot that twists and turns, making the manga as a whole, very entertaining. A solid 7/10 from me. |
KONO SHIMA NI WA MIDARA DE JAAKU NA MONO GA SUMU review
The first chapter seemed interesting, and it seemed like the MC was going to find a way to escape the island or get revenge. However, after a few chapters it turned into an only Ecchi plot with some hints of the real story. The story then was made to fit sex scenes into the series. This manga should have been better made into a hentai.
I have noticed this since I began reading manga or light novels, but it seems like if the main characters gets betrayed by someone close to them. The MC will eventually forgive them and make an excuse that their was a good reason for the betrayal. This series obviously has it, so another reason I dropped it. |
KONO SHIMA NI WA MIDARA DE JAAKU NA MONO GA SUMU review
I will try my best to not contain any spoilers, but if you think hints are also spoilers, there will be a bunch of them here.
So...Unfortunately, after reading every single chapter, the entire story just feels like a disjointed mess with ecchi stuff thrown into the mix. In detail: Story: 3 At first, you will find that everything feels like a nice supernatural mystery, yet, it really wasn't. The story will tell you why everything happened that way it did but in a sloppy way that leaves you will no real satisfaction. Even the reason for the ecchi stuff (Which is kind of the main theme, but not really...) is not clear nor satisfying to read through, they just did it because...? Art: 6 Well, the only reason that I give it a 6 is that the art isn't bad at all, but nothing impressive either, so...yeah...middle numbers Character: 3 It is all over the place. The main character went from a normal human being who was traumatized to a bat-shit insane person who felt the need to do whatever it takes to...escape? It was implied in the story that he could've escape in an extremely easy way, yet just because he gets to have sex, that is thrown out of the window. It is not like the villagers wanted him there either. The main bad guy or the main antagonist constantly stuck between "Okay, let's be rational", and "Oh, fuck that shit...Let's kill this fool!", and I was like "Dude, you have been doing the same shit like...a few centuries over, and you are the head of the village...Get a grip, dude...". I have more to say, but at this point, I may just as well spoil everything. Enjoyment: 3 I do not enjoy this, if I wanted ecchi stuff, I may as well read an 18+ doujin with the same plot, which there are an abundance of. The only reason I even bother to get it a 3 is because they at least give the story an opening and an ending. Overall: 3 I still appreciate the writer went the direction that created this story because it tells me what works and what doesn't in the world of writing and storytelling. There is really no reason for me to read the entire series again, even if it is for the ecchi scenes, or if there is some information that I have missed, but honestly, even had I known, I don't think it will change much of what I think about the series. But at the same time, maybe the book was right that the reason I do not enjoy this was that my own value and experience does not match the writer's or something else, but regardless, thank you for the hard work. |
