When Soah's impoverished, desperate village decides to sacrifice her to the Water God Habaek to end a long drought, they believe that drowning one beautiful girl will save their entire community and bring much-needed rain. Not only is Soah surprised to be rescued by the Water God-instead of killed-she never imagined she'd be a welcomed guest in Habaek's magical kingdom, where an exciting new life awaits her! Most surprising, however, is the Water God himself... and how very different he is from the monster Soah imagined.

It has been so long that this manga has been on my list ever since I started noticing all the hype about it couple of years ago. And finally due to the lack of proper readings that I can get my hands on at the moment, I decided to finally give it a try. I am writing this here to inform all the people that will read this that I am certainly not a person that writes reviews but the hype about this manhwa irritated me so much that I am writing this hoping that it will help some people somehow.

Art is simply gorgeous, you can spend some time looking at the each page with appreciation. But story is lacking, it's inconsistent. There is a feeling that something is missing from the beginning till the 143 chapters that I've read so far. And the beauty of the art is just not cutting off that missing part. You find yourself in deep expectation that something big will happen by next chapter and the next but even though it's progressing, storytelling is just not working. You can appreciate the art for some time but when you pass through some six volumes - forty chapters or so, you just find yourself in unclear, somewhat shallow dialogs and a lazy plot, plus all the same drawings of lotus flowers, korean traditional architecture and costumes, moon, butterflies, more and more flowers and so on is just getting way boring and somehow distractive. I had high expectation from this manhwa and had been seeing it in many places very highly rated but in the end it was a disappointment. Of course I will continue reading it till the end but it is just to see how the characters will turn out in the end. I will just keep this in my on-hold list for now, until they finish the scanlation. When all the chapters are done and if I find time plus nothing better to do or read I will continue with the new parts but otherwise I will just skip through the ending to have some closure and that will be all.

Nevertheless, I want whoever is reading this to keep in mind that reviews are rather subjective opinions even if you would really try otherwise. Even though characters were let's say -alright- for me though again I found them quiet empty, story -which was suppose to be the selling point of this series- didn't work out. Story is overall sloppy and hollow, I can hardly feel the love between the leads but just this supposed attraction. The main couple's affection seemed too weak to me. I didn't even understand how, why and when did they even fell for each other! And the reasons they came up with during some dialogs in the story were so contradictory, very empty. I liked the earlier generations way better than the main leads' story. I also have to admit that I really liked the legendary "struggles of the gods" "war in heavens" storyline with all of its historical elements but really wished that it was expressed in a better way. You ought to expect more when there is already 19 volumes and 143 chapters trying to express a story, nonetheless it all fuels my overall disappointment.

I'm not familiar with Manhwa, but as a first time read - I have no doubts that I've chosen a fairly adequate one. The bride of the water god is a story about a girl who was sacrificed by the people of her village to the water god in exchange for rain. It sounds fairly simple, but the plot isn't all that easy to follow. There are many twists in the tale, and some of them aren't that clearly pointed out at the onset. Such as the water god's interesting, shall we say, condition.

The artistic style is, in essence, beautiful. But I do find myself distracted by it. I always seem to be drawn more to the art, rather than the story itself. All manga art (or in this case manhwa) have some sort of flow to it - but in this case, it can get overpowering at times. Which is probably the answer to much of my confusion as the story progresses. Although, it's not enough to put me off from reading it. As the story seems to pull you in. It sounds somewhat strange, but completely true.

One thing that I would change about it is how random characters appear and are not properly introduced until further down the story. You're left wondering what exactly is their purpose in the whole tale until a few chapters later, everything becomes clear. But maybe that's just me being slightly nitpicky. It does tend to be slightly annoying, but not overly so as when the person is actually introduced, a lot of things start to make sense. It's almost like a mystery novel.

Don't go into this manga (or should I say manhwa) and expect another run of the mill love story, because by all accounts it isn't. What has been created here is a very unique story with a very unusual take on the others in this genre. Despite it's knack of confusion (which is easily remedied by a re-read of earlier chapters) the bride of the water god is a truly interesting read indeed.

In the Bride of the Water God, we meet a TRAGIC woman named Soah, why is she so sad?

It's her wedding day.

Her husband?

The terrifyingly ugly, cruel, bad-tempered water god.

And so, dressed in her wedding day best; she is put on a boat and pushed out to sea only to be swallowed up by the water. She awakes in unknown foreign territory and the first person she sees is an old geezer who says he'll show her the way to the water god.

Children: YAY! The end!

No children, it's only the beginning

*Creepy horror movie sound effects*

The story was supposed to be a happy-ending-ed oneshot, that would have scored the most ratings the Manhwa could get. You see, the story does not have enough substance even for two chapters but the author has prolonged the ending by, as of now, over 100 chapters.

How? You may ask, considering I just said it didn’t have a plot worth two chapters.

The author uses the AWE-some skill of driving readers up the wall by using a never-ending cycle of sadness, betrayal and all things sinister and melancholic.
Seriously, the sun don’t shine wherever the writer is living.

All you can see and imagine is vacillation and tears. And over 50 chapters of crying, misunderstandings and generally getting nowhere except in a depressed stupor; it’s not really a very recommendable read, if you know what I mean…

The first chapter’s art was inspiring, beautiful, very similar to the art in the beginning of Goong (Manhwa) but then--

OH! But then…

*Goes on depressingly*

Continuing in the footsteps of Goong, it all goes wrong. WRONG!

Wrong!

WRONG!!

The art goes downhill so fast it all looks the same!
-By the way, that’s a pun [maniacal bad-pun laughter]

No proportion, no realism; the characters are privileged of having huge jelly eyes infesting their faces (the usual) with the added (now this is unusual even in bad stories) flying tears; I know, it sounds awesome.

Considering that we, as sane people, do not like being depressed; the story generally spreads it like it was love. I’d recommend you see a psychiatrist before I’d recommend reading this Manhwa.

I tried , really , I did. But this manhwa is just insolently dreadful .

Apart from the artwork , which is unique and too beautiful to stand , to be honest , so beautiful that's repetitive and boring.
But alright , let's say the artwork is the strongest point. And it's the only one , I promise.

No room for character development. Just a repetition after a repetition , a shallow inception of absurd scenes that sometimes are so fast that you don't quite get what's going on.

The way the story goes , you absolutely don't feel anything for the characters , no connection , no sympathy , no pain , no anger , no nothing as it lacks character and it's just the same old image , the same old theme with small alterations. And this GOES ON and on and on with no point. None at all! And don't even get me started with the sexual assault vibe that ricks. It should have just ended earlier and live in history as a really bad manhwa with inexcusable good reviews. But no , it must torment humankind forever as the author seems to think she invented fire or something and can't stop.

For conclusion I will say this : 'dis manhwa so bad , I put a bet with myself to read it all , just to see how much I will stand. (Can't help with the masochistic side of me , you see.) And really, I feel bad for writing such a rude review. But I feel that the author is the rudest one here.
So , have a good day , read something else that's going to help your mind grow , at least :) .

This manga is dreadful. Had to stop reading after 28 chapters because I was losing brain cells from reading it.

The story could have been so much more. It builds off of a mythical premise, and has a lot of potential to be an epic saga. However, the hopes and expectations were trampled by the flat, shallow character development, the dull plot, as well as the rigid and confusing composition of each frame ultimately make this manga a horrible waste of time.

Let's talk about the biggest plot twist involving Soah's lack of competence in recognizing that Mui and Haebek are one and the same person. God help her, since she doesn't seem to have a clue about anything. I suppose her life is supposed to be tragic, but she definitely does not come across as a brownie-points-grabbing, sympathy-winning, supposedly-dignified heroine. (Please write better scripts / develop better qualities for her!! How are all the decent looking characters falling for her left and right? I suppose her beauty must be the only answer - my heart is shattering.)

Then there's the water God, who has communication issues, and takes advantage of every cameo in his Mui form to sexually harass Soah. I get it, the intimacy is hot, and turns fans on; but the high frequency of such actions without adequately developing their feelings for each other come across as shallow, and appalling.

To wrap this up: unless you feel turned on by extremely detailed, clamp-wannabe illustrations, please walk away from this manga.
