Masao Kirishima

A bisexual effeminate sociopath who was often bullied by his only friend, Yuji Aoki. Rei had saved Masao from being beaten to death at one point in time, but barely remembers this event as the action was impulsively taken when Rei was still in shock over Sei's death. Soon after this incident, Masao kills Aoki. Masao is rather obsessed with Rei throughout the series, but to be more specific he is obsessed with the brutal side he saw when Rei saved him. Throughout the series Masao tries to convince Rei to let that brutal side of him take over and to become just like him. He strongly starts to dislike Kira after he sees that she is trying to nurture the good side in him, which is the exact opposite of what he's trying to do.


He even tries to kill Kira at one point in the series so Rei will have nothing in the way of him becoming a sociopath. Luckily Rei saves her just in time. When it gets to the point where Masao realizes that Rei has made too much improvement to go back to how he used to be he decides to try to kill Rei. He "just happens" to bump into him on the street while he's crying, saying how much he wants to change. Masao makes sure that Rei is near an ally, and when Rei gets close to him to comfort him Masao stabs him in the stomach and runs away. Rei survives and is able to tell the police that Masao tried to kill him. When the police found him and questioned him about it, he couldn't even remember Rei or Kira. It was like he never met them. This sort of thing is seen often in the psychological world; it's is called "repression". People's minds wipe away what the person in question doesn't want to think about. This proves that at least some part of Masao realizes that the things he does and the way he thinks is wrong, but his conscious hasn't really come to terms with it. But when Rei points it out shortly before Masao tries to stab him, you see a rare moment of humanity in him... he gets frustrated and actually yells at Rei, telling him to shut up. This is very rare for Masao, since throughout the series he always had a calm demeanor that at times seemed insanely creepy for the situations at hand.

Masao is proven to be extremely manipulative throughout the series. To get close to Kira and Rei he tricks them by acting very innocent, pure, and naive. And when later on in the series he gets admitted into a psychiatric hospital, he completely fakes getting better and feeling emotions just so he can get out.
