The Horizon review
I was hesitant to give this series a 10/10 because it isn't flawless (mainly because the pacing can be a bit off-kilter at times and there isn't a ton of time devoted to developing each of the characters introduced). However, I think a 10/10 series is a series that perfectly conveys what it is aiming to and capitalizes on its strengths to do so. The Horizon is a series that I think does just that: its messages and themes are clear all throughout and it is a master of showing and telling with its narrative. It is an existentialist story in every sense of the word: it confronts some of the most painful truths of human existence: we have been made to suffer, in many cases inflict suffering on each other, and we all have to face the deaths of friends, loved ones, and ultimately ourselves. The series looks at the ways that we try to overcome this suffering, the meaning that we find in ourselves, others, and the events of the world around us. Every aspect of the series serves to highlight these ideas and prompt the reader to ask themselves how they will confront these harsh truths.

Story: 9/10

The premise of the story is simple enough: There seems to be some kind of massive war going on that has decimate the country (specific location isn't given), two kids (named "the boy" and "the girl") run into each other in the chaos, work together to survive, and become friends. They run into other people along the way and face many challenges. Special attention is paid to specific challenges and characters that the boy and the girl face and they gradually form their own perspective on the world. There is a lot of suffering in this story as we are shown the impact of war on innocent lives (highlighted even more by the fact that we have no clue what caused the war or what parties are involved), disease, and insanity.

Art: 10/10

The art for this series is amazing mainly because the author was incredibly intentional about how he used it. The author often likes to show his ideas rather than say them. As an example, there is this moment where the boy's thoughts are represented as images that are gradually get more abstract to show that his thinking is spiraling. There are also moments where there are no backgrounds for multiple pages so the reader can digest things that have happened and soak in the expressions on the characters face. But sometimes this minimalism is contrasted with the most gorgeous scenes that you would immediately want to make a background for a phone or computer. There is hope in the midst of the hopeless of this story and that is reflected in the art.

Characters: 8/10

The boy and the girl are interesting characters in that we mainly see them reacting to their circumstances than having conversation (although there is an ample amount of inner dialogue and interactions). Their reactions to what's happening to them are realistic and they differ from each other in their responses: The boy seems to have a "delayed" response to trauma where things don't hit him in the moment but he has a kind of dissociation experience until it hits him later. The girl seems to experience everything immediately and breaks down in the moment. Both of these responses make perfect sense and the author does a good job of conveying them.

The other characters that they have experiences with (namely the strange man and the man in the suit) don't get developed as much but I think they are simply supposed to represent different ways of responding to the cruelty of the world. The man in the suit draws on tropes that we have seen before (a person seeking out a gray sense of justice because of injustice done to them) but it is done tastefully and the interesting thing here is how the boy interacts with him.

There could have been more time devoted to developing the new characters after the timeskip, but the integrity of the story wasn't compromised because of the lack of development.

Enjoyment: 10/10

I was engaged throughout the whole series and felt genuine empathy towards the characters. I enjoy stories that explore these kinds of themes and there were many moments that I was blown away by the execution.

Overall: 10/10

The series did a wonderful job exploring its existential themes and using the art, characters, and narrative to that end. It is story that most people who like psychological tragedies will at least enjoy. Although I rate it as a 10/10, I can see how people would see the issues I raised as evidence that it shouldn't have the rating. At any rate, outside of my subjective enjoyment of the series, I think this at least deserves an 8/10.

Yaotsukumo review
Story - 5/10

Yaotsukumo begins with Tsukumo, a seemingly normal high school girl. She is skilled at some kind of sword fighting which she practices with her father often and has a best friend named Chii-chan. One day on her way to meet up with her friend, Tsukumo is attacked by a mysterious slasher. She is barely saved by an immortal boy who she met years ago, named Yao. Yao tells Tsukumo (can you see where the title comes from yet?) that she is the Tokijiku, a being with the power to bestow immortality to a person. Yao was originally given immortality by the first Tokijiku. Yao asks a simple request from Tsukumo: "Kill me." Being immortal, he wishes for nothing more than to die and return to his deceased childhood friend, the original Tokijiku.

While the plot is not really that bad overall, there are many things in this 10 chapter manga which I think could have been removed. I think it would have worked fine with only 4 chapters instead of 10 as a lot of what happens between Chapter 2 and 7 is more or less filler. There are many elements in this story which do not contribute to the ending at all and many characters serve almost no purpose.

Art - 6/10

This manga contains a fair amount of gore, especially involving Yao since he is immortal and can survive being cut in half as his organs are spilled all over the ground. The art is very dark and tries a little too hard to make characters look dark even when they are supposed to be good. The character designs are simple (Tsukumo looks similar to Yui from Yumekui Merry and several other characters I can think of). The characters' eyes are drawn strangely as well as they are just 3 or 4 circles surrounding where their iris should be. It gives kind of a demonic feeling to some of the characters who are supposed to be human.

Character - 5/10

Really the only important characters are Tsukumo, Yao, and a god who's name I don't remember ever being said. Tsukumo and Yao make a good couple as long as you forget that Yao is 800 years older than her. Tsukumo is a fairly good female lead. She doesn't always sit on the sideline while Yao saves her (in fact Yao is actually pretty weak) and instead saves him a couple times. The drama between the two involving the original Tokijiku, who Yao loves, is also kind of interesting but is a mostly addressed during what I think could have been taken out of the story altogether. And lastly, the god is just your typical supernatural, mediocre villain. His motives are never explained and the only thing they ever tell you is that it's because of "karma." Other than that, there's just a few pointless supporting characters who gets shoved aside like the minor characters in Sword Art Online to make way for the main plot and characters.

Enjoyment - 6/10

I would not recommend this manga. It's just slightly below average all around and does not have anything special. It's a little similar to Nabari no Ou, but not as good, and I really believe that over half of this story could have been removed, and it would not have affected the ending at all.

tl;dr: A solid though short and clearly cut off adaptation.

This manga is an adaptation of a much longer light novel series that was serialized at about the same time as the anime aired. I should note that this review is from the perspective of someone who has already seen the anime, and thus ultimately ends up involving a lot of comparison to it. Ultimately, the core elements are the same, and really the main attraction point is the fanservice. However, there are a number of differences that I think have a pretty major effect.

For one, a significant amount of explanation, scenes, and events were removed in this manga as compared to the anime. However, though this may just be because I'd already seen the anime, but it didn't feel like the loss of these made it any more difficult to understand what was going on or as if things that were important were skipped over, which I suppose goes to show how simple the plot is, at least as far as the manga got. Furthermore, the anime felt like it had pretty slow pacing so it being sped up considerably is a major improvement. The plot in the anime gets a lot more intense and interesting as it approaches its end, but the manga ends before entering that phase with an ending that's even more rushed and clearly cut off as compared to the anime. Thus, the plot of the manga itself is simply some decent world building and an interesting premise that serves well for more character focused stories.

As for characters themselves, similarly to the anime and as is standard in the genre, the girls are the focus and fortunately manage to come through quite well in the stories focused on them, even if they are pretty generic. I should note that the focus on the girls in the manga was higher as compared to the anime with less focus on the protagonist. However, that actually helps considerably because most of what was taken out compared to the anime is scenes with the protagonist being awkward, lame, or overtly melodramatic, but the parts that remain are of him actually being competent. As a result, he seems more useful overall and overall a much better character, though that still only puts him into decent protagonist territory.

The comedy and action are both decent but not exceptional. The art is good in all aspects and not just fanservice like the anime and keeps the same great character and other designs. So all in all, I'd have to say it edges out to being better than the anime for what it does adapt.

Itoshi no Goshujinsama review
This manga romanticises a classical emotionally abusive relationship and pretends like it's the most normal thing in the world.

The flimsy story covers the undying devotion of Konomi towards her boyfriend Hiro who seems to respond by rejecting her over and over again, while she only has mild moments of sanity in which she lets it get to her. I won't spoil the ending, but I presume you already know how it's going to end.

The manga doesn't look bad visually, although there is often a lot through each other on the page. But it feels like it's trying to sell you on a really lousy product, by just flashing bright lights and popping party streamers, so you don't actually pay attention to the thing they're trying to sell.

The characters are mediocre ripoffs of humans who seem to have no actual character traits aside from their relationship to the other few characters that appear. The main character is by far the worst in this respect.

The story doesn't touch anything in you, and honestly, by chapter two I was so annoyed with the characters that I wanted to put it down. Fortunately it was very short because I wanted to read the whole thing before writing this review, because I was well and thoroughly done with this after just five chapters.

Had it been a oneshot, I would have been able to forgive many of the flaws, but in particular the empty characters and weak plot cannot support this series. Maybe find another manga to read.

Finally, a warning. Should you ever find yourself in a similar situation/relationship as the heroine. Talk to someone, them, your friends, maybe even a psychologist, because this is not normal!

AKUMA NA EROS review
I gave this manga a rating of "good" only because the concept was interesting. Other than that, I would say its just "fine." Something to read when you're bored and feel like reading something for the sake of just reading something.

The concept of the whole story is pretty interesting. A young girl is manipulated into making a deal with the devil to get her crush to notice her...that is how it all begins. Now I would like to say where the rest of the story goes, but I think there was an element of surprise in how things progressed so I will refrain. However, I like how layers and layers were added to the original plot. That is what made the story interesting. It has quite a few biblical references and creates conflict between the concept of evil and good in a romantic way.

With that being said, this story lacks a lot. Firstly, there is not much depth at all. The dialogue between the characters is quite cheesy and as some others said, comical. The characters lack the complexity that a story like this would require to make it epic. It is all pretty basic and bland, so don't expect much. It sucks to say that because again, I really think the concept was the best part, but it lost the potential to be awesome because of how basic and quick everything was.

The art style really is not bad, I don't think there was much issue with this. It was easy to follow along, and the panel was done properly.

The characters, you have one bad guy, one good guy, one naive girl and a crow. There is not much else to say, nothing too major with these characters because they do follow their typical roles.

Like I said, this story had major potential but it wasn't executed that well, with that being said, it was not horrible.
