Alabaster review
Alabaster succeeds in telling an engaging story of how an innocent character falls from grace and becomes a truly evil person. It’s a quick and easy read and i’d recommend it to most fans of manga.

Tezuka has been credited as saying this is one of his works he’s the most ashamed of, citing a bout of depression as the impetus for this extremely dark story. This is a tale of evil, death, destruction, corruption of goodness, betrayal, hate and death. While I can understand where Tezuka is coming from looking back on ‘Alabaster’ i’m going to be far more kind to it. I think it’s good, nearly great even, as long as you’re prepared to follow chaotic evil protagonists facing off against lawful evil antagonists with very little respite from hate, especially in the back half of the story.

Although I want to position myself as someone who enjoyed this manga, I do want to talk about some negatives. Alabaster has a bit of a tonal problem, frequently diverging from its serious subject matter to gag manga territory, only to bounce back on the next page. This whiplash was not conducive to the manga and I would have preferred most of these gag elements be excised, at least near the mid point. Also, the characters occasionally suffer from bouts of spontaneous character development that don’t feel built up enough. The characters are entertaining, but not very nuanced. Lastly, (no spoilers) the end of the manga, while perfectly fine, seemed as if it had a chance to be more profound than it ended up being. This isn’t a reason not to read this, just a notable flaw. I’d call it a 7/10 ending when it seemed like a 9/10 was coming.

If the premise sounds interesting, you should check it out, you’ll probably enjoy it, and if you like it, try Devilman by Go Nagai next.

Just Be Friends review
This was painful to read.

And I don't mean it by that it was sad or tragic, or whatever. The problem is that Just be Friends' first part is the most uninteresting thing ever and the second is just plain stupid and insulting.

These characters, while in high school, and all of their lovely adverntures are like the most basic and lazy usage of stereotypes. Giving someone a popular trait is not bad in itself, because you always add something yours tho.

This had nothing of that. Yeah I mean it's supposed to be an interpretation of a song but it's still a self-written piece of story influenced by something.

Extroverted, carefree and popular girl enters the school and everyone is just "wooow". There's also our typical loner who is supposed to be smarter than the other guys. They sit next to each other and start dating.

That description seems pretty sweet fundamentally, but we already know they are going to be together from the first few pages. Therefore there's not any anticipation over what's going to happen. It still doesn't mean it won't be good - it's a nice concept that could work pretty well actually. But yeah like I was saying it's just formulaic to the bone. I swear to god I've seen the exact same storyboard and progression in a couple of other manga combined together. The romance part was completely boring, which already doesn't make me want to wait for le big reason why Miyuta broke up with Tachibana.

Another thing are these generic as sentences like "We got closer, but the distance between us is only increasing" bullshit or "What a coward, I can't even say what I feel omgggg". Come on - this is a textbook example that's been used dozens of times and it's impossible to feel moved or know the characters better in the way they're portrayed. I just don't sense even a tiny bit of personality in them. They are like living templates.

You could say that this setup was all "intentional" just to show a not really known side of what happens after the confession, but that's the only reason of counter-argumenting myself I've found. If that was true, then they even failed that - the actual reason of them breaking up is problematic as fuck, which I will talk about in the second part of this.

After the first time skip we are shown that Miyuta is feeling unwell because of Tachibana's work. He thinks that their relationship is pointless and he wants to break up with her. Thus we reach the climax of the second part, where he finally says it. But here's the thing - he had large trouble doing this and he still had feelings for Tachibana, yet he still didn't even think of like, I don't know, talking with her? It's the fundament of being a couple. But what I despise the most is that the author makes this desicion seem like a mature departure and ending this chapter in their lives. Tachibana devoted herself to the thing she loved the most, while still loving Miyuta, 'cause she thought he was ok with it, I mean he wasn't fucking syaing anything. Then out of the blue Miyuta drops a bomb on her, because he's not emotionally strong enough to discuss his frustration.

That fucker is basically justifying the breakup as "help with Tachibana's carrier". Can you imagine how disgusting that is? He's trashing her feelings for him and decides by himself what's better for Tachibana,

A couple years later Miyuta says something along the lines of "if I had been more mature back then, would I end up with her?", but it's just a silly thought, cause he says he's happy with his new girlfriend. Well, it seems like a great character development. But unfortunately just seconds later he says he wants to be born again and again just to see Tachibana. Come on dude, it that were to happen you'd just ruin another person's life (his new gf) without feeling even a bit of guilt. Every single human does harm to someone unknowingly but this guy keeps on manipulating and using others without a shred of realizing this, let alone remorse, or at least it's shown that way.

I am fully aware that Miyuta is just a human being and it's natural that he would encounter these unpleasant things, but it's shown here as if he did not do anything wrong and these forcefully melancholic situations are explained by cheapest values and usage of morals possible.

Oh and the art is just lazy, not detailed by any means and boring with unnatural face expressions.

Hot Gimmick review
Hot Gimmick is a manga written Miki Aihara. It is a Shojo Manga and has a focus on a meek teenager named Hatsumi Narita. She lives in Japan's Company Housing complex and the story revolves around the difficulties and life styles of such a complex. The crux of story lies in the relationship with the guys in her life. Her Borther, a long time child hood bully and finally a old friend who has come back to the complex.

Art: The art is good but doesn't have a whole lot of variety. All the characters are good looking. The tones and shading is very light and there is rarely ever any contrast. You won't find the stark black that you see in manga such as Rurouni Kenshin.

Story: The story is interesting IF predictable. Frankly the + and - of the story is that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. It is a very funny manga little bit of tension with regards to relationships.

Characters: Cliche but likeable. Not a lot of significant depth but enough variety between them to keep it interesting.

Enjoyment: It takes some time to get interesting (although never boring) but the manga's high point is definitely it's comedy and oh no they didn't moments.

Conclusion: Slightly above average manga. There are some pervy moments but it is by no means that kind of novel. I got the VIZBIG edition (3 volummes in 1). They retail at $20 a book and there are four but you can save some money off amazon. If you can get the set for around 45-60, you got a good deal.

Better Recommendation in Shojo line: Fruits Basket, Nana.

Riki-Oh review
"even God needs salvation"

Riki-Oh is a young kid with great intelligence and an ungodly amount of strength who finds himself in a max security prison serving out his 3 year sentence for assault. unbeknownst to the reader, this prison will be a very large hint into finding out the true secrets about his long lost biological family. Thats about as much story i can really give without spoiling too much because any other hints gives away the greatness. Its a classic shounen manga from the 90s so the story is a little generic and repetitive as Riki-Oh goes through the same process of endless searching and hardship to find each family member. It looses points on the creative aspect of things but the very end is definitely worth it because it ends up taking a left turn into some pretty meta topics about religion and spiritualism and why humans act the way they do. (the quote about really give you an idea about how hardcore this manga it)

the art is definitely appealing but most panels are nothing to write home about. The very large scenery panels are gorgeous and the fighting scenes are pretty rad and can get REALLY gorey and heavily detailed which kinda reminded me of Berserk at some moments (which is AWESOME for those really into that kind of stuff).

The characters were definitely unique. The "good" characters were kinda bland and were usually never seen of again. Theres a point where this one semi-major bad guy's daughter falls in love with Riki-Oh and she was literally in maybe two chapters and was never mentioned or seen of again. Riki-Oh's material arts teacher was a stereotypical character that is kinda important to progress Riki-Oh's story but he also was barely in the manga at all and only had one lame fight scene. The villains are a totally different story! Every single "mini boss" Riki-Oh meets are all interconnected in non obvious ways which is good because being able to guess the plot correctly takes the fun out of reading. These mini bosses are also cleverly woven into the plot and they are all really different and they all have individual backstories that all give hints to Riki-Oh's heritage and the fate of his family. The "main bosses" he encounters are WILD! the fight scenes are also a pleasure to read and theres always so much drama involved

be warned though, Riki-Oh is still a manga geared towards a younger male audience so the beginning will come off as really brash and appealing to the lowest denominator, but thats only to make sure that the target audience is hooked. As the story progressed and the mysteries are turning up more questions than answers is when things really reach a whole new level. The story as always had some root in religion and spiritualism (spoiler: if you havent noticed that theres a star of david on his hand). the beginning introduces it but keeps it vague, however as the plot thickens, that star begins to represent more than just the power Riki-Oh possesses. Without giving too much away, the story goes into jewish refugee settlements into china during WWII, figuring out the meaning of life and why humans do what they do, it touches on the extremist views of judo-christian religions as well as the nazi agenda and so on. It does reach a point where there are literal bible scriptures and stories played out.

All i can say, to rap things up as short and sweet as humanly possible: the beginning starts of slow but hold out because it is SO worth the ending. some people might think that the ending was mellow-dramatic but i personally didnt. I feel very satisfied with it and would recommend to anyone who is in the mood to have some mindless fun while also psychoanalyzing nazis and wondering about how the world was created
