Solo Leveling review
it is BY FAR MY FAVOURITE MANHWA ***in this genre*** that I have EVER read.
It is one of those MUST READ!!!
I don't usually write reviews , unless it is worth expressing my true feelings XD
So here comes my attempt to not spoil everything but make you interested in readig it)

Story

I get that first 10 chapters are kinda hard to get over, but after that the most interesting part beggins.
And even if this is one of those OP characters stories , it is a lot more captivating than many others you've read.
This manhwa has absolutely everything you need. Action , adventure , supernatural powers , magic (good and bad) , fantasy a weak to strong Main character , social life , secrets and breaking of rules , dungeons and very interesting moves and actions from all the characters involved.

So the main story line is MAIN CHARACTER developing his skills and becoming more powerful.
It was such an intense reading how he was becoming who he is now at chapter 110. Even his appearance has changed , he absolutely DEVELOPED.
This is what I like the most about it. And moreover , he is not stupidly boasting about it to everyone around.
But instead he is kinda stealthy and descreet about his actions.

The only thing I didn't like about the story SPOILER AHEAD!!! was the chapter about insects island. Which sounded a lot like HunrterXHunter stolen idea XD. Or maybe this was just a coincidence that the enemies were also insects XD ***

So this is why I gave the story a 9 instead of a VERY HARD 10.

Art

I am usually not very spoiled about the art quality or format , but this manhwa was one of those beautiful mangas you can hardly find nowadays. It has a lot of pretty effects and the QUALITY is absolutely astonishing .
Expecially the blue and black flame - shadow thing I ABSOLUTELY ADORE IT <3

Characters

Well. People might think a lot different than me - but I liked every single character - even the villains)
They all have their inner world and a story to tell.
And every single one has a truth that they believe in , so I deeply care about every single one.

Overall

SO It is just my advice - Just try to read it.
If you get to chapter 30 without noticing how time passes - You'll officially be named a FAN

It is worth waiting for every weekly chapter
(this is such a pain OMG , I hate waiting)

Shingeki no Kyojin review
Where to begin! Maybe by saying that this is my first review on MAL and that English is NOT my native language, so I apologize in advance for any mistake I may make!

Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin, is (atleast for me) AMAZING. The first season of the anime got me back into anime once again back in 2013. Once that ended I jumped immediately on the manga, and boy, was that a good choice! It now sits in my top 3 manga of all time!

Story 10: Amazing and thrilling, never boring and simply one of the most complex and well written story in the medium. What starts off as a simple shonen with giant naked monsters that eat people, gradually evolves overtime as every secret of the world is discovered, evolving in what it is now, 123 chapters is: a post-apocalyptic war-psychological thriller and a Seinen (it's no longer a shonen, sorry).

Art 8: well, let's just say that if I had written this review after the first 40-50 ish chapters, I would have given this category probably a 5 or a 6, but even in it's artwork, Isayama has developed immensely. Is it the best? Of course not. But the evolution is indeed breathtaking. Try and compare chapter 1 with chapter 123 and you'll see

Characters 10: just like its story, AoT characters develop as the secrets are revealed. After the recent chapters, Eren is my 2nd favourite character of all time, just behind Guts from Berserk, And that says it all, since he wasn't that special for me for great part of the story.

Enjoyment 10: few series have given me this kind of feelings. Hype, sadness, hope, feeling of betrayal and so on. Simply breathtaking.
Isayama, you genius!!

Overall 10: it's a must read

Monster review
What makes a great psychological thriller? An intelligent plot? Unpredictable plot twists? Memorable, deep characters? Or is it the overall atmosphere of the series? If you're looking for a manga that can give you all of the above, Naoki Urasawa's got your back. Chances are that you have probably heard of Monster before and was wondering if it's as good as some people make it out to be, and to be quite honest, it deserves every bit of praise it gets and lives up to the hype surrounding it. Securing a position at the top of almost every manga ranking site, Monster is a critically acclaimed manga that is often regarded as the manga that came closest to being flawless, whether you want to believe that or not is up to you, but one thing is for sure, it's a gem that shouldn't be missed and a must-read for mystery enthusiasts.

Monster's story is the aspect that it excels the most in. it features a long, intellectual and complex story with zero plot holes despite its lengh, and somehow manages to be relatively slow paced yet engaging and captivating. Set in Germany, it's centered around Kenzo Tenma, a brilliant brain surgeon, who -out of his own sense of justice- saves a mysterious kid from certain death, not realizing he had just revived a monster, which leads to a series of events that will forever change his life. He then sets out on a journey to fix the mistake he made and restore his normal life that he lost.
The story delves into the characteristics of human nature and explores the origins of evil. The story is told from the point of view of several characters, which helps providing a more in-depth view on the occurring events. The pacing of the story is simply amazing, a slow burn which suits the manga's theme perfectly. Of course, with the pacing being slow and all, this manga isn't really for everyone, but the fact that it can keep you interested all the way is something I can guarantee. There are no real "fillers", most of the backgrounds of the side characters are either related to the story one way or another, or help explain the actions of those characters in an effort to flesh out the characters, they were enjoyable as well and didn't derail the main plot.
Plot twists are around every corner, the mysteries are solved in a way that builds the suspense and tension towards the climax. It's like a jigsaw puzzle in the sense that it starts out slow and obscure and in time you start to see the big picture.
The end poses lots of questions, most of the answers are there for you to find if you put enough thought into it.
Urasawa has demonstrated his solid writing capabilities in other occasions, but for me Monster is his best work. In short, one of the best stories you'll ever find in a manga.

It was the complaint of some critics that Monster has a wide cast of characters, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Unlike what we're used to see, the side characters of Monster aren't just there to push the plot forward. Each of them has a role to play in the main plot, with their own stories and motives, stories that reinforce the message this manga delivers, humans are the real monsters.
Most of the characters are fleshed out well-developed too, which is something most manga fail at. I don't think there was a single character that was bland and uninteresting. Urasawa pulling that off with that many characters is an accomplishment on its own.
The main character, Tenma, is your good-hearted person who believes all humans are equal and cares deeply for his friends. Although he's a very good character, Tenma is outshined by the rest of the main cast.
Johan, the main villain (And my personal pick for the greatest anime/manga villain), is a genius, cold-blooded serial killer and a master manipulator, he's the embodiment of pure evil and the kind of villain who would make Hannibal Lecter look like a little girl in comparison. Johan doesn't need a death note or an eye that can control people, all what he has is his wits and charisma, and his innocent features and calm nature make him even more terrifying.
Lunge is a character I liked throughout the series. A smart and very successful detective who's in charge of solving the serial killings case, dedicating himself to that to the point of obsession. One of his most memorable habits is how he taps his finger to memorize all what he hears.

As for the art, there isn't much for me to say. It was very good, not the best you could find but still great for a 90s manga. Urasawa's art style is unique, he dishes out simple, yet great, character designs, and his talent at drawing facial expressions is pretty evident.
The backgrounds were so beautiful and detailed it feels like the characters were just cropped in there, in a good way.

I was surprised at how well-written this manga is, it maintained a constant level of quality throughout the 18 volumes. Whenever I read it I just couldn't stop. Monster's atmosphere and cliff hangers left me at the edge of my seat every time, always leaving me waiting for more, that's how a thriller is supposed to be.

All in all, Monster is one of the best psychological dramas in manga history, it sets the standards to all other manga of the same genre. If you haven't read it yet, do give it a shot, it's certainly a worthwhile read.

Pupa review
I'll admit, I went into this knowing I wouldn't like it. I'd watched the anime to boost some stats for achievements so here we are. Curiosity got the better of me.

Also, I won't be breaking this into a standard review. I think I'll limit this to one slate rather than breaking it into Story, Art, Character, etc. It's simply unnecessary.

With that said--

It's funny how a common discussion about the anime is that the convoluted and confusing nature of the story is likely due to the lack of actual content. Being a 5 or so minute show it's greatly limited by the amount of content it can actually cover. Yet, even with 34 chapter, Pupa never measures up to anything worthwhile. In fact, it's almost more confusing and more convoluted.

Characters seem to teleport, locations don't really have an identity, and the pacing is a mile a minute with the restraint of an elementary school student who just discovered Naruto (I'm not bad mouthing Nardo, just the theoretical person above which actually includes myself lol). Choices in the narrative are made simply because, "Well, that's cool! Let's do that!" and I get that, I really do. In fact, I agree that some concepts in this story are quite interesting, but that's because I'm thinking back to the conceptual stage and not engaging with the final presentation.

Which, by the way, is really bad. The art for this manga is janky and boring. The backgrounds are 90% white and the art that actually takes precedence is only fine. Sometimes I would see a panel or 2-page spread and be left wondering what's actually happening. This is alleviated later as the mangaka improves, but it doesn't save anything about this manga.

I haven't said much of anything about the actual story, just about the structure and presentation, so maybe I should get into that.

It's bad. Real bad. It's exploitative, extreme, vile, and I think the real sickening aspect of this narrative is that it brings to light a very dark and twisted heart that the author has. Now, this will sound so judgemental and inappropriate coming from me (as a huge fan of Berserk) but let me clarify before I head into my main thoughts.

Extreme content is like anything else in a story. With enough care and respect to the content itself, one can do anything with their story and I feel it will largely be acceptable. This does not open the floodgates to writing something pornographic, but it means that if someone were to write something sexual, there are certain stipulations that allow it to be functionally appropriate and respectable to the content, characters, and your intended audience. The same works for horrific acts of violence. In fact, this is more commonly used and often written better, but we've all experienced something that was either A) poorly written (like a bad death or unnecessary death that ruined a story) or B) read something that was far more gratuitous and bordered on snuff/exploitation.

I would argue that a story like Berserk respects this foundation (save for maybe 1 scene. And no, it's not the Eclipse). A story like Pupa, however, does not. With overly erotic scenes between perceived siblings, gore for the sake of gore, characters who do heinous acts with little reason, and certain plot points that make you go, "What the heck!?", you're ultimately stuck with a story whose author has a few screws loose.

To return to my first defining characteristic, the "Well, that's cool! Let's do that!" aspect of the mangaka, the issue comes in when you have certain acts within this story that, honestly, shouldn't be considered cool in the first place. And the reason I use a lame term like 'cool' is that I don't think she felt that it was anything other than cool. And I get that, some of these things have an edge to them that's shiny and reflective and I want to get so much closer but when you're writing like a child, someone has to tell you that you're running towards a knife. Don't do that.

I think this covers most, if not all, my thoughts on Pupa. There's some other stuff I could say specifically but I'm not here to rail on the story's specifics. I wanted to detail the failings of it's concepts because I feel like that hasn't been totally touched on in other reviews. So hopefully you found this educational. =3

But yeah, don't read it. It's boring and a waste of time.

Katsura Akira review
Mod Note: This review was initially posted for the one-shot, Sachie-chan Guu!!, and was subsequently merged into Katsura Akira.

Sachie-chan Guu!! is a one shot manga that was serialized in Jump Square in May of 2008. From first glance on this manga’s MAL page you would suspect that it holds basically no merit, but I beg to differ. Akira Toriyama (prominently known for his original series Dragon Ball) and Masakazu Katsura (creator of Video Girl Ai, I”s, Zetman and possibly most well-known for his character designs in Tiger & Bunny) collaborated for their first time on this dream project with Toriyama on story and Katsura on art. Still not impressed? Well not only did this manga have two great mangakas working on it—the manga itself actually is quite impressive, even if it is only 53 pages. Keep in mind that this IS a one-shot and Toriyama & Katsura didn’t intend for it to be serialized into a weekly edition.

The story follows Sachie; a cute, young and ditsy teenage school girl. Her father is the martial arts champion Nijudayu Momochi, one of the strongest fighters on planet earth. While walking home from school Sachie encounters some octopus like aliens who say they are looking for her father to come and help them fight off evil-doers, the Mil Gang, at their village on Planet Octo. When they tell Sachie that her dad will get to pick any one prize from a catalogue they created, she decides that she will go and fight the Mil Gang herself—so she can get the birthmark on her butt that all the boys make fun of removed. Along with the Martial Arts World Cup Junior Champion, Zarid-san, they head off to Planet Octo. That basically sums up the story, if you’re disappointed I question your expectations on what type of in-depth story a 53 page one-shot “should” have. This is an extremely funny and refreshing short story that is highly complimented by the other aspects which I’ll speak about next.

The art was great, in fact you would think it was drawn my Toriyama himself, but it was actually drawn by Katsura. He decided for this project he would go against his highly realistic character designs and tried to match Akira’s super deformed style which he has become so famous for—and he did a great job of it. The art is smooth and nice to look at it matches the characters personalities perfectly and with a manga this short that’s all that really matters.

There is an ever on-going argument that character development is necessary for a piece of work to hold any merit—I find this to be incorrect, especially in such a short manga. We are given basic personalities for the characters in the way of humour and character designs and that’s all we really need. Toriyama always idealizes his characters and never gives them dark-traits but Katsura likes to make them act like normal people, this collaboration of different ideas contrasted well in creating highly enjoyable characters to have in a story.

Enjoyment is the main factor of this manga in my opinion, I mean are you really going to read a one-shot because you’re not looking for something nice and fun to past time? Akira and Katsura did a great job of making an easy to understand and enjoyable story with nice to look at art which overall created a great manga that I’ll find hard to forget about.

I will always highly recommend this one-shot to anyone, because it is so short yet so enjoyable. If you want a short story done right by two accomplished mangakas, complimented by great art and great characters, then give Sachie-chan Guu!! a chance, you won’t regret it.

Higashi no Kurume to Tonari no Meguru review
[A Quirky Love Story]

If you are looking for a complicated story, or something with depth, then this story is not for you. For, this story is so simple, so quirky, and so predictable, that everyone who reads the first chapter will know how it ends. However, it’s how it executes and leads to its conclusion is what makes it an interesting story.

STORY:

Our story begins with Kousuke El, who has a rather boring school life, except for the fact that he’s sitting next to his crush, Tsukahara Meguru — a popular, cute, stoic girl. A couple days later, Kousuke’s parents decide to move, while still attending the same school. And, his neighbor (well everyone knows) is Tsukahara Meguru, who somewhat has a different personality. Why does Tsukahara Meguru have a different personality outside school? Well, that’s the question. And the main driving force of this manga.

Honestly, though, this story is really simple and quite predictable. It’s short with no filler chapters. There are barely any twist, and if there are, the reader already knows what the possibilities are. And, while, the story is predictable, it manages to avoid the common pitfalls of typical ecchi stories, such as the sick visit, shower scenes, changing clothe scenes, and pool scenes. In fact, it’s avoids them to give the story a more realistic feel, and the readers will acknowledge it immediately. While, it manages to avoids most cliches, the story, in the middle and end arc, are somewhat lacking and tries to create ‘drama’ and other wild ideas to spice up the story, but it comes off as weak and not very entertaining, and somewhat annoys the readers. Overall, though, the story is okay.

CHARACTERS:

This is where this manga shines. Its characters are really interesting and quirky, especially the female characters like Tsukahara Meguru, Kururi, Tsubasa, and even the granny. They all have very distinct personalities, and are unique and funny in their own strange ways. The only character that is somewhat lacking was the main character, himself. He comes off as bland, nice, and caring like most other ecchi manga characters.

Note: the best character is the cat, for a very particular reason.

ART:

There isn’t much to say about the art, it isn’t the most detailed, nor lacking, but rather there with enough details to know what the characters look like and where they are. The art for its background scenery are very detailed, give a broad sense for the open countryside. Its unique facial expressions are amusing and are generally funny. The overall character design, especially for the girls, are cute, and charming. But, not too cute, so that they give off a moe appearance, but rather a somewhat realistically drawn human like-appearance. Overall, its art is fine, but its key details are the background scenery and its unique facial expressions.

ENJOYMENT:

If you want a simple, straight love story, then this story is for you. You will definitely enjoy the distinct personalities of each female character. Overall, if you focus on the character interactions, their facial expressions, and funny dialogue, then you will be fine.

Ojousama no Shimobe review
(THIS REVIEW CONSISTS OF HUGE SPOILERS SO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK)

Story 7/10
Personally I like it, even though it's CLICHÉ... writing this review there are 50 chapters in total and still on-going and at the 50th chapter they explain the reason why the girls family is making him do this which explains why the parents are fine with the Mc seeing them naked and touching their body, i would be honest I didn't expect that reason since I thought they want them to be normal girls like what maid is saying in the Manga but it not and actually more than that, but what I don't get is why?? They want the Mc to be their son in law like the Mc said in chapter 1 he is a son of a maid and a butler I hope the story will answer this in the future

Art 9/10
Its great and it's uncensored (of course not the genitals)

Characters 8/10
I personally like the characters like their personality is basic you can see them in any harem but there's a twist to them and that's what I like, like a Mc that is kind but he is not dense like other Mc he knows when the girls like him which what I like the most, the other one is the 2nd fml a tsundere she is just your normal tsundere but what makes her good is the fact that she acts when she is jealous and not beating the Mc for being flirt like when she feel jealous or uneasy she will make a move to the mc, she even force the Mc to kiss her, a maid that love to tease the Mc I don't know I just love her but now it's unknown if she likes the Mc (I hope she is, she is my favorite girl), now with the girl in the cover I don't really find her personality amusing since she's just a copy of shiina mashiro from sakura-sou

Enjoyment 10/10
I definitely enjoy it and every chapter of it, it's not a unique romance Manga it's generic af but definitely enjoyable it's worth it, and you need to read it

Overall 8/10
It's definitely good but if you don't like fan service or too much fan service (do you even exist?? if you exist why u gae??) its a no go since every chapter has a fan service but I swear those fan service are good and cute

-Atsuhi-

This is a dumb review and definitely not that helpful I'm new to this thing so I'm sorry if this review didn't help as much if you want to read it or not

Hot Gimmick review
THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. I will try to be as oblique as possible, but if you correctly guess who or what I am talking about, that's your own damn fault.

Hot Gimmick is all right. It's not a particularly good manga by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not an offensively horrible one either. The art isn't bad, it's actually pretty good, albeit uninspired. The story is rather standard Soap Opera fare, and I mean that in the most positive way possible. It is ostensibly about Hatsumi, our intrepid heroine, but throughout the series we see her will subverted by the male lead(s). However, my issue isn't that she isn't a strong or willful character, because I can still say, "Well, at least she isn't flat." And she really isn't. There is some small amount of depth to this character. She has internal conflicts and drama. It's everyone else I don't like.

All of the men in this make me feel incredibly uncomfortable. Like, reading this, I can't help but feel like the mangaka was sexually assaulted at a relatively young age, or perhaps knows someone who was. All of the guys in this are either so transparently evil you can practically see them twirling their moustaches, totally ineffectual, willfully ignorant of what Hatsumi really wants in favor of whatever the hell it is THEY want, obsessed with sex, on the autism spectrum, or some combination of these things.

For instance, let's take Ryoki, Hatsumi's "slave master." Aihara-sensei spends the entire series trying to convince us that he does have feelings for her. But I just don't buy it one bit. All he cares about his own gratification, he spends so much time actively trying to make her suffer. And when he isn't doing so intentionally, it's because he really doesn't understand anything about how Hatsumi thinks and feels, or any other human being for that matter. But what makes me even more frustrated with his character is that despite the fact that he's so easy to read, Hatsumi can't understand anything about him or his worldview either! Is assholishness really so foreign a concept that the average Japanese high school girl can't wrap her head around it?

Then there's Azusa. He's an okay character, I guess. You might actually enjoy reading about him. Y'know, if you're stupid. I don't want to give anything specific away--even though I'm very clearly recommending you not read this manga--but there's a part very early on in the series where he does something pretty awful, and the entire rest of the series we're led to believe he's an okay guy. No, he's not. He's a jerkass, and this "ends justify the means" bullshit isn't gonna fly here. "Oh, he had a really tortured past, he can't help but be bad." You know who else had a really tortured past? Adolf Hitler. There, I said it. Godwin's law can go to hell.

So, is Hot Gimmick good? No. Is it bad? ...No? I wanna say it's a horrible train wreck nobody should ever read, but the plotline, standard and predictable as it is, was fairly entertaining throughout most of it. There were some plot elements that seemed like they were shoehorned in ("WOW WHAT A TWIST! I CERTAINLY DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING" "Of course not, because it wasn't set up in any way shape or form and really just came out of nowhere"). So, while I can't say that I hated it, I also can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone. Maybe if you're thirteen years old. I mean, that's how old I was when I originally read it, and I really seemed to enjoy it back then. But as is true of a lot of things I liked back then, it cannot withstand the harsh light of day being shined upon it.
