One Piece review
One Piece is a monument in the manga/anime world. There is not another work that can be named that is so loved, so large, and so acclaimed.

For all that, though, the sensation lingers that maybe its faults have been washed from view by the massive wave of hype and adoration surrounding it.

I have read One Piece, to the at-the-time current chapter, at least three times. It was always a struggle to maintain focus and interest. Several flaws continuously added upon themselves, until they drowned out my view.

This review attempts to address the many faults of the manga, from the most objective point of view--that of a reader who neither hates nor loves the series, who holds no real emotions towards it.

STORY

The story reads like the ecstacy-driven doodle-comics of a child. The various arcs are surreal in basis, and character designs are fantastical. This is not in and of itself a bad thing--sometimes it is amusing to see what the mangaka comes up with next--but after hundreds upon hundreds of chapters of zany crazy hijinks, it all blurs together. There is a constant high output of crazy; however, after so many readings, a tolerance is reached, and it is no longer remarkable or engaging.

There is a well-developed fan theory that makes what I feel is a conclusive case for the end of the manga. It points to many hints and threads carried throughout the arcs, and weaves a pattern for the rest of the show, based off of real historical accounts. Many point to this theory as a sign of Oda-sensei's ability to create great plots. This is very, very wrong. This fan theory, while solid in nature, was only noticed by one reader, who had an extraneous amount of knowledge on key parts of the subject. Foreshadowing serves a purpose in literature--its primary purpose is to hint at what is to come, but more importantly, it builds excitement in the readers, and by fueling fan conspiracy, allows fans to become engaged in the work. This fan theory, while solid, is based off of hints so subtle that the audience at large passed by them, unnoticed, and if not that, misinterpreted them entirely. The foreshadowing failed in this regard.

ART

Like the story, the art is completely surreal. This is not to the benefit of the manga. Many will point to the elaborate backgrounds and surrounding action in large panels as signs of devotion and talent. I will not dispute the former, but the latter is definitely not the case. Artists need to be able to draw the reader's attention to important pieces of action. This is accomplished in many ways--through line thickness, framing, and level of detail. Oda-sensei fundamentally lacks the ability to focus layers of the background in meaningful ways. Some panels have so many details that just looking at them hurts. There is simply too much unsorted information to process, and it meshes together into a meaningless blur. In short, complexity and details do NOT automatically make a manga superior to any one or another. It requires balance, which One Piece lacks.

CHARACTERS

Here I will address both the general character design and the artistic design. The characters are, for the most part, loud, excitable, hooplah-generating machines. While there are characters who are "quieter", like Chopper or Nico, their characters often seem to get caught up in the overwhelming wave of energy that is mass-produced from other characters. I am certain that in any other manga these characters would be excessively loud in their own regard.

By loud, I mean that the characters lack much subtlety. They all have their reasons for sailing with Luffy, and they all have goals and dreams and backstory. However, their baseline personalities are caricatured versions of the person that these histories would've otherwise produced. Sanji is OBSESSED WITH WOMEN, Zoro is OBSESSED WITH SWORDS AND STRENGTH, Usopp IS A COWARD EXCEPT HE PULLS HIMSELF TOGETHER FOR HIS NAKAMA, Franky ALWAYS NEEDS MORE MODIFICATINS, Brooks IS LITERALLY BONES AND MUSIC AND PUNS, Nami IS A STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN. It's all so superficial; they all lack nuance. It's boring and annoying and grating after 700+ chapters of the same shallow characterizations.

One of my largest issues with One Piece is the simple visual character designs. I understand that the manga is surrealistic; however, there is a limit to how noodly people can get (and I'm not just talking about Luffy!) If people are thin or normal, then they are streched out, strange thin bendable shades of people. The opposite does not improve the situation; when they are large, they are just a mountain with eyes and appendages. One can capture the essential form of a person and transform it into a surreal caricature which still manages to express the essential qualities of a person; this mangaka cannot do that. People become monstrous, and it eventually feels like I'm reading a webcomic about an entirely different species.

OVERALL

The manga is popular. The manga is huge. The manga grosses more money than any other.

The manga's story has been the same theme for so long that it has lost its flavor. The manga's art shows severe deficiencies in simple framing abilities. The manga's characters are as shallow as the plot.

It's not terrible, being as large as it is. However, its size has blinded people to its very real faults. It's a good manga to read if you want to understand what your manga-loving friends are talking about; it's not the manga you want to read if you want a manga to digest, thoughtfully and slowly. The appeal of this manga comes from the community, not from the manga itself.

Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria review
This is the weakest in the top light novels. I had that feeling from the get-go, as I immediately reunited with Endless Eight. People often hate it, but I recognised that arc was a icon of Haruhi Suzumiya Series, as it was a trigger to ignite the development of the characters, so having a chance to re-experience it worth a trial. Nothing to lose, you know.

The opening of this series, as I said, was an imitation of Endless Eight. As an introduction, it did raise my interest. Then the sequel just came out of nowhere, as its bond with the rest hardly existed, only in name. That time into the world of game was interesting, followed by the illusions of a teenager about his supremacy and ideal. Then the last volume was thrown out as the closure for the mess the author had made. I could say there were some quality moments, but the lack of coordination was overwhelming. There is no explaination for the phenomenoms, as the older sister just naturally possessed an ability, and afterwards others achieved supernatural powers like it was a matter of fact. 'This is a fictionary work' might be an excuse, but at least give me the answers for 5W and 1H for the origin and the consequence afterwards, logical or illogical is fine. However, there were none of it, weren't there? And a wedding was not enough, you know.

With the missing of what I call 'leading factors', the author could bend the rules for his convenience. So, Kazuki Hoshino appeared to have a will, but he was the easiest one to manipulate. The one played the villain most of the time was in fact an illusive boy and with the brain penetration jutsu of Naruto, he returned to the bright side? Maria Otonashi didn't even have a 'self', neither did this series, and that problem was conveniently solved with some paragraphs at the end, The characters' background were also comfortable for the author to make their reasons sound, but they were instantly left behind without any serious attempt to untie the knots. There were nothing genuine in this series, as the writter just molded his characters with his will only and there they were, in a world void of systematical order. Even the communication and storytelling wasn't made in an appropriate way. IT HURTS, IT HURTS, IT HURTS... Well, at least reading SAO now doesn't hurt that much. Sorry, SAO, I'm still not gonna read you.

If you felt the emptiness in my review, you would also sense the emptiness of the related target, because I couldn't even find a model for this work.

Botsuraku Yotei nano de, Kaji Shokunin wo Mezasu review
Okay, so I've rated this manga a 7.8/10 because it had too many cliches

That was a joke, incase anyone was wondering, because this is a unintelligible manga built using ONLY cliches. I'll explain why I rated it a 7 in a bit.

Story- 5
Okay, so the main story, from what I could tell is that truck-kun takes a guy to another world, classic reincarnation tale, but he is essentially just a side character or something in a game he once played. That is probably the best summary I could give, seeing as how the first chapter is a giant cluster f*** with no way to tell what the hell is going on. Im honestly so confused, and a bit startled. It's execution isn't terrible, but this manga is essentially a guy trying to follow a route from a game he played before truck-kun came into his life.

Art- 5
Honest opinion? Its just average. Nothing special. Utterly boring.

Character- 5
Again, nothing special here, except maybe the main character who is a bit of a arse with a loser complex. Although the super tall guy is kinda funny and the girl he meets up with is MUCH more interesting than the "love interest"

Enjoyment- 10
Okay, so here is where my review goes more off the rail and bonkers than Rick and Morty season 3. Everything else has been leading to this point, and here it is: This manga is really bad, so bad that it's hilarious to read. I actually had a good time reading the four chapters that are out right now, just because they were so bad. The characters were paper thin, the story was all over the place, the art was subpar, and the entire manga just felt confusing. It's a bad manga, but it's so bad it has passed the point of garbage and has moved on to the comedy side of being bad.

Overall- 7
Again, this manga is bad, from the very start you could tell that it was going to be stupidly bad, but you'll get hooked because you don't truly know how bad it's going to be. If you want to check out something like that, then be my guest and jump right in like I did, however if you don't feel like reading fidget spinner: the manga then don't and go find something ACTUALLY interesting

Mission! School review
Make no mistake: Mission! School is a stupid manga. It quickly forgets its own central plot (premise: hijinks ensue as girls trained for combat have to adapt to a normal school setting), and its characters are one-note at best. But it's funny. It's really really funny. And it doesn't have to be anything else.

You see, Mission! School is first and foremost a gag manga, full of weirdos and fools doing silly things in variably ridiculous scenarios, framed as a romantic comedy and peppered with a moderate disregard for the Fourth Wall. In it, we see male lead Ishikawa - a mildly reserved guy (who, as the manga gleefully and excessively points out, has no remarkable features or abilities) - generally play the put-upon straight-man to female lead Haduki, who drives the comedy with her earnest, overeager, and ultimately doomed attempts to do normal teenage stuff in a normal way, in spite of her ridiculously out-there rich-girl upbringing, her insane world-conquest-focused schooling, and "help" from her lazy, self-interested, possibly-sociopathic attendant/friend/classmate Minagawa. A cast of strange supporting characters join in and try to interfere with or aid Ishikawa and Haduki's misadventures and budding relationship, all either starting off as or becoming slaves to the gag-a-minute nature of the manga. And everyone and everything in Mission! School is so sincerely and excitedly committed to its gags (and particular gags, at that!) that it skips right past feeling "forced" and becomes amusing in and of itself.

Mission! School is not a witty manga. It is incapable of utilizing much if any character humor. It doesn't derive entertainment value from situational humor (save for absurdism). No, when it comes right down to it, Mission! School's primary strength is its ability to repeatedly defy minor expectations about what's going on (in the plot and in the characters' heads) in generally stupid ways with vast enthusiasm, perfect timing, and expressive art.

And that's it. As a romance, Mission! School is insubstantial and unfulfilling. As a story, it has no plot, and there's no depth to its characters. Heck, its final volume is 50% comprised of meta-humor about their impending cancellation. As a comedy, though? It's light-hearted, good-natured, and, most importantly, gut-bustingly silly. I laughed often and wholeheartedly.

So what else is there to say that's really meaningful? Maybe it's ultimately forgettable, but I've never smiled, chuckled, and laughed as much while reading a manga. Simple and (perhaps) disposable though it may seem, Mission! School holds a special place in my heart. So maybe you should give it a try!
___________________
Story: 3/10 - It forgets its own premise for the most part and has only the vaguest sense of narrative motion
Art: 9/10 - While not innovative in any sense, the character art is a constant highlight of the work. It is energetic and expressive, effectively adapting its style for whatever suits the gag-du-jour. Comedic timing is controlled with skillful panel composition.
Character: 5/10 - Character development is just about the last priority of this manga, and consistency isn't far behind. Case in point, multiple supporting characters end up abandoning their key characteristics or being forgotten entirely. But, while they may have the level of complexity in their personalities as cardboard cutouts would, oh boy are they fun to watch!
Enjoyment: 10/10
Overall: 9/10

Billionaire Girl review
Billionaire Girl is a short story by Isuna Hasekura, the author of Spice & Wolf. So going into this series I expected a nice little romance with characters at least 1/100th as compelling as Holo and Lawrence. Unfortunately compelling is a word that couldn't be associated with any aspect of this manga whatsoever.

What started off somewhat promising quickly deteriorated into mediocrity and then the characters just became annoying which left little remaining to enjoy. There are definitely a few positives to take from this series and despite what I've said it is by no stretch awful or unbearable. If you want a short series for a yearly MAL challenge or have decided to invest in Stocks following the fall of the market due to Corona then you might get something small out of this series. Even then you're unlikely to find anything much in this extremely brief look at stocks and the life of a rich girl who doesn't know anything of the world outside her job.

The single biggest problem with Billionaire Girl would have to be the fact that while several plot lines and issues revealed themselves none of them were actually dealt with. This manga is a whole bunch of nothing happening for 17 chapters. You'll find hundreds of other romance series where a thick headed main character struggles to realise they're in love so you may as well skip this one.

As a side note, if you're surprised by the high scores others gave this series make sure to check when their reviews were written, you'll notice all the high scores came 9 years ago when this manga first started publishing and long before it finished.
