Inio Asano is simply the best, someone so absolutely talented that even those that do not care for manga are doing themselves a disservice in not read this man works. He rises so far above his contemporaries that its almost as if they don't even exist on the same plane as him. In the same way that I feel that those that fail to read Alan Moore have missed out on something integral in storytelling, Punpun succeeds in being a quintessential part of a young persons journey to adult. At its Thematic core they're is a vulnerableness that is directly and painfully expressed, especially that heart breaking realization that the life and girl and things you always imagined making you happy are simply illusions that you have built into monolithic lies. Goodnight Punpun so carefully creates these narratives of abuse and struggle, depression and even some slight critiques of society without ever losing the pain of growing up. The rise and fall of Punpun is logical and rooted in tragedy staying palatable and directly painful. The only unfortunate distinction and one that has seemed to be overcome, was that because of the abstract way of showing Punpun, many people may underestimate or downright reject this manga, even though it is the closest thing I've seen in manga to perfection.
