I'm not typically a huge manga guru, but I've been in a phase where I'm basically obsessed with shoujo manga. I came across this one and was put off at first by the vampire aspect - I'm usually not a fan of vampire stories - but I decided to give it a try, and I was blown away.

First off, the art is absolutely incredible. At first, I thought it was too plain and simplistic; I was used the the extravagant styles in mangas such as Loveless and Hana to Akuma. But the sophisticated and realistic look in Blood Alone really grew on me, and now I think it's one of the most beautiful mangas I've ever seen. Really gorgeous, straightforward, and captivating.

As for the story, it's a little bit typical for the genre, but exciting nonetheless. A young girl and her guardian, who protects her from various evil and magical entities. Story and plot aren't the driving forces of this manga, though.In addition to the art, what really makes this manga outstanding is the characters.

Kuroe and Misaki are enthralling. Their unique situation, their complementary personalities, their deep bond... From the beginning I can't help but love their relationship, romantic or no. Misaki is adorable in her girlish jealousy and Kuroe is hilarious is his obliviousness. ^^ They make such an interesting pair. And for those worried about age difference, this isn't a Loli manga at all, really. Misaki is actually 14 years old, even if physically she appears younger, but in any case for most of the manga there is little more than sweet and chaste moments between them. There are some of the most adorable scenes I've ever seen in the manga. They make your heart melt!

The other characters are all well developed, believable, and likeable, as well. I can't help but like Sainome-senpai, even as Misaki's "competition" for Kuroe. And everything about the vampires and their society is explained very clearly, very reasonably. It does get a little gory at times, though, so watch out for that.

Anyway, this is definitely one of my favorite manga of all time. I hope to see more chapters ASAP. Give it a shot - I promise you'll enjoy it!
