Witch Hunter review

Witch Hunter is a stupid Manhwa. While there is a lot to like about Witch Hunter, particularly the art, character design, and characters, it's also a mind numbingly stupid story that oddly fetishizes underage people and is full of retcons. To sum up in a single phrase, this is essentially D. Gray Man but with more early 2000s camp, weaker overall plot, but stronger individual character moments.

Pros:

The Characters - This is a manhwa that wears its shounen-ness on it's sleeve. The characters are wacky but surprisingly deep in moments. Their designs are distinct and many motiviations are clear cut. The author also has this weird thing about sunglasses and over-the-top style which is more of a positive than a negative.

The Art - The art is very good. It's clean, detailed, and distinct. While it dips into generic style here and there, overall it's pretty original.

Cons:

The Story - The story is kinda dumb. While the indvidual character moments are clear, the story is a bit of a convoluted mess. It's not entirely clear why the main characters are going after the bad guys and backstories can be a bit unclear in regards to the next plot points.

The Bizarre Fetishization of Kids - This Manhwa does not shy away from older people lusting over younger people and younger siblings. It's cringe as hell.

Unclear Themes - It's unclear what the author is trying to say in the macro in this manhwa. While the micro stories can be very good, the macro story can be unclear in what it is trying to say. At times, it focuses on family but doesn't quite stick the landing. There is also a bizarre theme of master - servant relationships that the author has no idea to go with.

Conclusion:

If this were 2010, I would say to pass on this manhwa but in the context of the rise of webtoons, I would say that this is worth a read. It's not a great manhwa by any means but it's a bit of a relic to see what Korean comics were like before they became webtoons.
