Watashi no Ookami-kun review

This is a great short manga with a wonderful emotional core. The story could have benefited from a few extra chapters, to flesh out some characters, but isn't really hindered by it's fast resolution. It's just made more dramatic.
As a longtime fan of urban fantasy anything, I just loved the setting. It's realistic and peaceful, without being boring. There is something inherently cool about the idea of an extremely magical city that is also very pastoral and quiet. It just skirts most of the overplayed things people usually associate with urban fantasy, like faction war, societal manipulation and angst. I kinda feel like just talking about how cool it is that this manga went urban fantasy without the angst. When I saw that Twilight reference with the "you smell nice..." thing I have to admit I shuddered. And then it was all because she smelled like delicious food. I just love it. And just gets better from that..
But this is a drama romance, not a comedy romance. The love story is sweet and pure without being unrealistic, and the drama, when it happens, might be based on a cliché concept ("they're from two different worlds") but is treated in a reasonable way with understandable consequences and no exaggeration for effect. It doesn't need any of that because it's very effective, engaging without going overboard, showing emotion without the need for onomatopoeia (a shoujo manga without a single "doki doki" panel!).
The art is gorgeous. Great anatomy and expression, superb narrative and pacing. Also, full backgrounds with screentones added for depth. The screentones on the characters, however, are little muddy, makes it seem like everyone is always wearing grey. But this is the one single problem with the art, and I absolutely forgive it.
