Well, here comes my 3rd review, okay, lets start.
Ushio and Tora is the tale about a boy who finds a mystical object which is called the beast spear. Being under attack by youkai he needs a way to be able to ward them off, however an imposing youkai named Tora is trapped along the spear. Needing each others the 2 strike a deal.
This mismatched team ends up facing evil entities across Japan since the beast spear is made for that purpose.
The story is simple, but good, it is quite periodical, facing a new enemy every couple chapters like most old school stories. However, behind that lies a much larger scheme that starts being setup since early in the serie. Ultimately I can say Ushio and Tora has one of the most epic final arcs ive read, being extremely extense and dramatic. The backstories of certain characters are unexpectedly emotional and extremely well portrayed. About half the manga though is just short arcs, the longer more important arcs dont start till about midway. Even then, the shorter arcs are still quite enjoyable.
The series is also quite fond of its gags, Tora is a walking comedy trope due to his lack of knoledge of modern lifestyle. The characters are somewhat relatable, most are your average middle or high school students, the evil spirits are evil spirits, nothing out of the ordinary. Ushio is a cheerful kid with some problems like all, but with guts, maybe a little too many given with what he's dealing with but its pretty understandable given his circumstances. If anything, Tora steals the spotlight from others a good deal of the serie.
Only slight complaint would be the art, but it potrays the authors intentions pretty accurately so its fine.
At the end I consider this a classic, a must read for any fan of old school or supernatural manga. Definetely one of my favorites out of the 200+ manga ive read/am reading.
