Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist review

This is, in truth, one of my absolute favorite mangas of all time.

Now, I'm VERY picky when it comes to manga. With anime, I'm typically not as critical, however since the mangas are (usually) the original version of whatever the anime may be (unless it doesn't have an anime adaption), I have much higher expectations. I watched the anime first, as I usually do, because I like to understand the whole story and basic plot of the series before really diving deep into it. This was exactly the case with Devils and Realist. The anime adaption was OK, the animation was pretty choppy in some parts, and they made it pretty fanservice-y, which I didn't really like before for me, either have actual romance there or don't. It should be one or another. And the way they adapted the art in the anime really bugged me sometimes- certain parts of the characters seemed too big (usually their noses or eyes), and the anime just overall wasn't a very good adaption. But, I liked the whole idea, and I LOVED the characters, so I decided to check the manga out.

The manga absolutely blew me away. It went into way more depth, and I couldn't stop reading! I loved the characters, the art, their designs, and their interactions and relationships with eachother. I was pretty shocked when there were actual historical figures in there, and angels that are really in the bible. To me, it added to the manga's sense of realism. There are way more characters in the manga, and I particularly am very interested in the relationship between William and Dantalion.

Yes, I ship these two. No, it's not because "oMG YAOI!1!!!!!111!", I could care less whether they were gay, straight, or goddamn hippos. I can sense a pretty deep connection between them, partly because of William having (spoilers start here) Solomon's blood in him. Now, I can't say too much as of now because I haven't been able to finish the manga yet. (I really want to, but a lot of personal issues have come up.) And even though at first, Dantalion only stuck around to convince William to choose him as elector, but if that were the case now then he would've left to go back to Hell the moment Lucifer awakened. Why did he stick around? That I'm unsure of right now, but what I'm trying to say here is that their relationship definitely has so much depth and emotion to it and it draws me into this manga even more. As I keep reading, I can't wait to see how their relationship changes (I've seen many spoilers, so I do have some idea).

And, the art is absolutely PHENOMENAL. Definitely one of my favorite manga styles now, the way the characters are drawn and the expressions show so much about each characters personality and emotions.

I don't want this review to drag on, so I'll quickly wrap this up. Why isn't this manga more well-known? The storyline is so creative and unique, it's pretty historically accurate, the characters are all different and intriguing, the art is stunning, and it's very well written in general. I hope that in the future it becomes more wellknown, though I don't wish for it to become a mainstream manga because most of those aren't the best. The lowest rating I would give this manga is a 9. But, I'm giving it a 10, because of all the various things I listed above and more. I'm excited to catch up to where the manga is currently!
