Gakuen Alice review

You don't expect a "magical girl" manga to punch you in the gut with so many emotions but this was one of the many surprises that awaited me when I picked up this series. What sounds like such a childish concept on the surface (girl follows her best friend to a magical school and discovers abilities of her own), delves into some intensely dark territory spanning illicit affairs, conspiracies, tragedy and facing the difficult task identifying friend from foe, lie from truth and even right from wrong.

I gave it a 9 overall, but a 7 for both story (the world was needlessly complicated and art). However the characters more than make up for that.

I was astounded at the delicate balance of light and happy moments that were interspersed with angst and so much sadness. The relationships that develop between the characters especially Hotaru, Mikan, Narumi, Natsume, Ruka and Bear happen at a natural and organic pace. To see them overcome their barriers and learn to trust and depend on each other is really endearing to see, especially in the face of some of the heartbreak that they must survive together.

I don't really know what to make of this Manga, it gripped me and I just kept coming back to it, even when I would insist that my heart just couldn't take it anymore. All I know is that it sucked me in completely, had me laughing and crying, and often, I would think about the chapter I just read for days afterwards. The world can be a little complicated at times, but you just keep coming back to the characters who are so great. Nastume especially does the angsty hero so well, especially as brave little boy who just wants to protect those who are dear to him - no matter what the cost.

It's one of my classics for sure.
