Sommaire
After miraculously surviving a freak helicopter accident, Hikari "Picasso" Haruma finds that he somehow has the power to help people through his art. He is helped by his friend Chiaki Yamamoto who was killed in the helicopter accident, but came back as an angel.
According to Chiaki, when the accident happened both she and Picasso died, but she begged God to save Picasso because of his wonderful talent, so Picasso survived the accident on condition that he saves other people. Basically when he sees someone in trouble, Picasso's able to draw a picture symbolizing the person's problem, and then enter that picture to see that person's hidden feelings and use that knowledge to help them in the real world.
(Picasso got his nickname because he wrote his name ヒカリ, hi-ka-ri, on his school shoes, but his リ looked like a ソ (so) and Chiaki called him "Hikaso" so he ended up being called Picasso. Even though he actually aspires to be like Da Vinci.)

Genkaku Picasso review
I once saw this in the manga section of my local bookstore and thought nothing of it, but for some reason i chose to pick it up and start reading. And i'm so glad i did. Genkaku Picasso is one of the better manga i have ever read.
Story: As you may have been able to tell form the synopsis, the story follows the life of Hikari Haruma, or a.k.a. Picasso. An accident occurs while him and his friend Chiaki, are lazing around by the riverside. Chiaki winds up dead, but comes back later informing Picasso that if he doesn't help other people, he'll rot to death. To me, the concept alone got me interested but the further i delved the more i realized just how good it was. From the different scenarios in his drawings, to the progression itself, everything was done in a way i found quite enjoyable and innovative. I give the Story a 9/10, it was great, but it felt like it lacked something for a perfect score. Art: The art was definitely one of the best aspects of this manga. You could tell, from even the first few pages, the amount of work and detail that went into drawing it. The art is excellent, especially when Picasso draws. All i can say is it's outstanding! 10/10! Characters: The characters are another unique aspect i found Genkaku Picasso. The characters are fully fleshed out as real individuals, in a way that doesn't apply them to any cliche or stereotype. The characters were fun and memorable, and acted in ways one would expect them too and even in some ways you wouldn't. Although the characters were very good, they didn't stand out too much on their own save for the main characters, Chiaki and Picasso. 8/10 Enjoyment: Genkaku Picasso is one of the rare manga that i've stumbled across that i actively search for new volumes. Every time i go anywhere near a bookstore, i automatically searched for the newest volume. I had to know where it went and how it ended. Unfortunately, it had to end and it doesn't really skimp on it's ending either. It was an amazing manga that i would instantly recommend to any of my friends. I hope you give it a shot. 10/10 This is, i think, my second review. I hope it helps. |
Genkaku Picasso review
A 3 volume manga that you will want to read in one day. The art was well done and the art created by the main character was on point on as well. It's the authors unique style of art which is simple yet gets the job done.
The story is paced very well for being so short in terms of volumes. Probably one of the best mangas out there with less than five volumes. Anyway, Picasso goes on an adventure to save himself by saving others through the use of his artistic abilities. The characters are very interesting and relatable which brings their own problems to Picasso's attention. It is a bit episodic which might make the whole series seem longer than it is. However, I found that the story is good enough to keep your attention through the reading. |
