My Little Pony: Tomodachi wa Mahou review

When I first heard that there was a My Little Pony manga, I was shocked to say the least. However, the twelve chapters that I read were a pleasant surprise. The manga is a slice of life/comedy approach to the My Little Pony franchise, depicting the day to day lives of everyone's favorite ponies. It keeps the spirit of My Little Pony, while doing a good job on the slice of life aspect.

Story: 5
As expected of the slice of life genre, there isn't much story so to speak. It is instead episodic, changing from chapter to chapter with no real story. However, the mini stories told in each chapter were entertaining and enjoyable.

Art: 8
The art was clean and pleasant to look at. It was all in color and had a similar art style to the show. It retained the feel of a manga while still being reminiscent of the original.

Character: 7
While there was no character development, the ponies are all likable and have interesting interactions. For more on the characters, refer to the My Little Pony franchise of shows, where it is much easier to get to know their personalities.

Enjoyment: 10
Overall, it was a quick read but an enjoyable ride. I highly recommend being at least familiar with the shows prior to reading this, otherwise you likely won't get the full experience. If you're bored and looking for a quick manga to read, at only 12 chapters, I recommend this manga. It's a simple slice of life but still enjoyable, and allows us to see the ponies in a different environment than the one they are usually portrayed in.

Overall: 7
While I certainly enjoyed it, the My Little Pony manga was by no means a masterpiece of any kind. It's simply something fluffy and light to enjoy when bored. If looking for an extension of the My Little Pony universe, by all means read it. However, don't expect something groundbreaking. Nevertheless, it was a fun read and I recommend it.
