Kindan Series review
This is an updated and re-review of the manga. I want to first say that this is not for the faint of heart. If you have issues with adult males, around 20+ years in relationships with 14 year old girls....this may not be for you. If it is an "eewww" factor then this is definitely not for you. If you have such hang-ups but respect a countries laws of acceptability even if it goes against your own personal beliefs, this may still not be right for you. However, if you have no problems with romantic pairings no matter where they arise and with whom and do not believe in any boundaries of love (as long as consensual), if it can be called that , then I say go for it. As a reviewer I do think I should take some responsibility and forewarn people who may have more conservative leanings and/or those who may not be comfortable with certain themes.

As a note before I begin I would like to inform some people who may not know that in Japan the age of consent no matter gender is 13. Don't *gasp*, the age of consent in Mexico goes as low as 12. Yeah, 12. Think that's crazy in the US the state of Maine consent is 16, BUT teens ages 14/15 can have intercourse with those at least 5 years older. Minnesota has even crazier laws. As I said depending on culture there are various laws, respect is paramount.

The key fundamental issue surrounding this story is obsession and possession. It has an extremely dominating lead male who definitely doesn't take no for an answer and ramrods his way over the young and impressionable young girl. He has molded her into an object and this definitely moves into the objectification of women within a lot of these mangas. Women are demoralized, and in essence raped of their dignity. They forgo who they are in order to please, support, and adhere to the Alpha males lead. How then can I call it a romance? Because in some ways there is a free choice. The choice is actually poor for the lead female to be with a man who's always objectified her and what she's known or go with someone who wants to objectify her in order to hurt the lead male. (Although not a dominating theme it is still there). There is a lot going on in this read. You have the young girl portrayed as the quintessentially weak female that grates on one's nerves. They normally seem to use height to show the difference between the two, but the drawing of the girl actually made her appear older to me. More along the lines of 16-18.

Since I've gone over the characters a bit, I'll go over my feelings on the story. As I said it's obsession, possession, domination and objectification continuously in various story arcs. You get tired of the lead male, despite the fact he's attractive. You get annoyed by the lead female and her uncertainty but you deal. Her uncertainty is created most definitely by having herself being overshadowed by the needs of the male. This is definitely seen in their sexual relationship, which seems more non-consensual but then reluctantly accepting. In relation to Mayu Shingo's work, which fits this genre, it's termed "consensual rape" <----utter oxymoronic nonsense. An example is Akuma na Eros.

What I found interesting is that you can ignore the fact he's an adult and she's a young girl and just look at the relationship as a whole. In many cases in reality, women in a male dominated world, but also an abusive relationship, go through something very similar. This is where the story moves from being your average story of dominance to a bit more onto social life. The unfortunate issues of a woman's role in a male run world becomes pronounced because of the breakdown of the female character. It's bloody depressing as a female to see that displayed. The unfortunate part of this, however is the fact that they don't seem to grow from it.

So the story was fine, although there was no real growth. The art was definitely beautiful to look at. Nicely done. The characters were a disappointment because they were cliched submissive, weak, almost no-opinion female being overpowered by the needs and wants of an Alpha, misogynistic male. However, I did enjoy it considering the fact it grabs your attention hoping for some growth and for that I give it credit. Overall it was fine.

Kagamigami review
If you came here after reading Psyren, turn back and just read that again.
If you didn't come here from Psyren, go read that instead.

Now I'm not saying that Kagamigami is bad, it's definitely not, but it ultimately falls short of what I think it should've been able to achieve, especially based on the author and the concept. In a nutshell, I think that Kagamigami has an excellent premise and setting that wasn't given the care and attention it needed to be something really great.

For a quick tldr, this manga is primarily about finding and stopping a terrorist group, with a secondary plotline about the power struggle between a cast of major families, all of this taking place in a world where youkai (spirits, demons, etc.) are real and we have the loose of equivalent of shamans (think Shaman King) doing battle with them.

For the first 20 or so chapters, the terrorist plot line is the main focus and it's done very well. The pacing is good and the mystery unfolds at a solid pace. Character introductions are handled pretty well and the main characters have a fairly strong dynamic. 8/10

The next 10 or so chapters brings the major families into play and we get some nice insight into the underlying structure of the world. This is also good. 8/10

Then you realise there's only 10 chapters left and it's all downhill from here. I won't say how it goes downhill (and in fairness it's not a terrible ending) but I cannot pretend that it didn't. The ending was rushed, mediocrely explained and ultimately didn't make good use of where the story could have gone. 5/10

Kagamigami could've been a strong 8 to weak 9. All the pieces were there, the direction of the manga was on track and I know the author has the skill to take us there. So I'm disappointed that it ended up being as mediocre as it did at the end, and I'm sad that the great manga it could've been simply doesn't exist.

If you're a fan of Psyren, or Shaman King, or just the shonen battle genre in general then I would still recommend Kagamigami. I would just ask that you keep your expectations in check and just enjoy ride.

Or just go read Psyren.

I changed my mind a lot of times while reading this manga.

At first, I thought it was just a simplistic revenge manga. Then I thought it was a revenge manga with a shallow story. Then I thought it was a story that tries to get a creepy feeling under your skin. Then I thought it was a rather creepy story that shows off a lot of strange and previously unthinkable things. Then I thought…

Well, you get the idea.

The further I read, the creepier it gets. At its core, I still see it as mostly a simple revenge story, but the author sure takes care to insert a lot of things along the way. By the end, you’re left wondering if you’re reading a revenge story or a story about a bunch of crazy loons.

I won’t spoil anything, but I will say the story certainly kept the surprises up.

Moving aside from that, the only other thing of note is the art. I’m conflicted here – primarily because I don’t know whether the awful art is intentional or not. On the surface, it seems awful primarily because characters often looked like fanged monsters when angry and, when they’re not angry, they looked indistinguishable from each other.

At first, I disliked it but, later on, I ended up wondering if the author was using the art to make a commentary on the characters.

So…what am I saying? I’m saying I really don’t know how I feel about it. The important part, though, is that I did enjoy reading it. Would I recommend it to others? Yes. Overall, I think it’s a short and enjoyable read. Plus, the fact that it’s so confusing actually lends to its enjoyment, I think.

If nothing else, I would suggest it as a fun romp that can be finished quickly.

Sakura Juuyuushi review
Story: The story is very good, the genre's are fantasy, historical and romance. The main character, Sakura, is a bit cliche since she's your average love-sick teenager. But she has some kendo skills, which definitely makes it worthwhile for me. There are only two chapters for the first volume right now, but I think it'll be a great read. The story is intriguing and very interesting. 8/10

Art: The art is simply wonderfully delightful. It's very clean and crisp and will possible appeal to lots of people. The lines are clear, and the characters are drawn out well. I love their eyes, their drawn out so well and show so much expression. 10/10

Character: As you know, Sakura is the main heroine. From what I see, she's a slightly love-sick, kind, and a little ditzy. A bit like your common shoujo girl, with some kendo skills. I'm sure she'll put her kendo skills to use later on. There are plenty of hot boys in the story, so some eye candy. 9/10

Enjoyment: This is definitely very entertaining. The only problem is that it has so little chapters so far, so I can't really say if I enjoy it or not. For now, it's a good read. I hope it exceeds my expectations in the future. 8/10

Overall: I highly recommend you reading this if you like plenty of hot boys, a physically and possibly mentally strong heroine, and a historical background. It's definitely captured my interest, let it capture yours too. 9/10
