One Piece review
One Piece isn't just a manga story about pirates. It's a true epic about the great pirate era, and the many events that took place during such a time. In all my time reading manga, I have never found a series that I've enjoyed nearly as much as One Piece.

The story is massive, yet simple. You wouldn't expect such a simple idea of a plot to become to grand and massive, but it does. What's more is unlike many other long time manga writers who have succumbed to the pressures of writing a long term series, One Piece doesn't fall flat on it's face. It's story has been very well thought out, to the point where it's writer knows exactly how it's going to end. It's just about getting there that makes the story fun. The story is just as fun and investing now as it always has been, and many will argue that it's even more investing now.

Many people critique One Piece's artwork for being too "outlandish" or "weird". However, it's style is exactly what makes the series so great. It's the very foundation it stands on. A manga where animals can talk if you don't say they can't, where attacks are stronger the bigger they are, and more. They are manga characters living in a cartoon world.

I have also found that it's artwork is what sets it apart from the lot. A problem that I've found with many manga is that they suffer from a form of "sameness". By that I mean many characters wouldn't look out of place in another series. Let's be honest here, a lot of manga look very similar in style. There are some unique styles in the bunch, but the majority look similar, if not the same. This is where One Piece steps in. Even in a sea of manga series, you'd immediately be able to pick out which series is One Piece, even if you've never seen it.

Additionally, speaking on the art itself rather than the art style, it can be very gorgeous. Shots of islands made up of pretty much anything you can imagine, and everywhere you can imagine. Imposing figures, imaginative character designs, and more. While it may not be the most visually intense or impressive, there is certainly a uniqueness to love in One Piece's art.

I will speak something on the art style, and a lot of people point to this to critique...the way many women are drawn. Often drawn with an exaggerated hourglass frame, may women are drawn to look...well, very sexually attractive. However, I believe a lot of people are just pointing to some examples of similar modeled characters, and trying to blow it out of proportion. Yes, there are women who are drawn to look attractive. However, there are also plenty of women with just as weird bodies as any of the men. Short and round, or massive and hulking. There are plenty. Additionally, I've found that many of the people arguing about the way women are drawn also never speak on how muscled the men are drawn, so there's a bit of hypocrisy there.

As for the characters, well, the characters is one of the biggest selling points of the manga. Even with 600+ characters, so many of them are unforgettable thanks to either their crazy powers, their unique quirks, or the amount of time and effort the series puts into them. One Piece has the most lovable main cast I've ever seen. Not just in Shone Jump, but in all of manga. Each of them are so unique, respectable, and what's more is that they're all necessary to the series in some way, or to characters within the series. They all depend on each other. This is all that I will write on this, otherwise I risk getting into spoiler territory by writing examples of great characters. But truly, One Piece has some of the best characters in all of Shonen Jump.

My enjoyment? I've never enjoyed a series more. Everything is incredibly spot on. Whether it be the story, artwork, characters, or anything else. And whenever there's an arc that may feel slower or lacking, it doesn't last too long, and soon you're heading to the next island, that promises so much more fun and adventure.

Overall, One Piece is a series that any Shonen Jump fan should check out. This manga is absolutely brilliant, and always seems to be thinking not about how the arc will end, but how the arc will tie into the next one, and how that will tie into the world as a whole, and the story's ending. However, I am ranking it a "9" instead of a "10", since it's not over yet. Still, from what's been written so far, I believe it's the best that Shonen Jump has to offer.

Cutie Honey review
I'm a fan of Go Nagai but this is one manga that every fan MUST AVOID. The anime is where the good stuff's at.

As much as I like Honey as a character, this is a surprisingly bad debut for the series. Essentially, Honey is an android created to defeat the Panther Claw organization & most of the series plays in a monster of the week formula, however this is sex exploitation at it's worst.

This manga is best summed up as a bad porno as it features an all girls campus where teachers whip their students & occasionally violate them for no purpose whatsoever. A lot of the story is surrounded by lesbian conduct in a very unrealistic matter, especially when most of the girls at the campus look more like hairy men with breasts. What I'm trying to express is that there is no sense of story or even some sort of sexual arousal (if that's what you're looking for) as it comes off more disturbing than sexy.

There's multiple scenes that serve no purpose filled with fetish moments as this will come off as a guilty pleasure at the slightest. It's not worth reading as this is definitely Go Nagai at his worst. While it does contain the same violent & dark storytelling Nagai is known for, the writing is more focused on sexual activity in a very uncomfortable way as the visuals aren't pleasing to anyone regardless of sexual preference.

Cutie Honey's debut is a snuff manga while its not as grotesque as more infamous titles such as Hell Season, this is still pretty bad. It's very surprising that the anime series is what popularized the character & is a much better start to the magical girl genre. Watch the 1973 anime & its other anime series. While fan service & ecchi is expected in a Cutie Honey series; all of the animes are better than this awful book.

School Ningyo review
"We had a rumor at our school... At night, in the school's pool, mermaids would appear..."

Yoshitomi Akihito is an author with a diverse body of work, ranging from cute girls love oneshots to medical dramas to shounen sci-fi stories. For a horror series to pop up on such an eclectic resume isn't all that unusual, but beyond being unique among his works its subject matter and distinct method of storytelling stands out as memorable even among similar series in the same genre. Although its brief duration limits the overall impact of the delivery, School Ningyo is a delightfully creepy story that knows just when and how to deliver the final blow to the reader.

The story of School Ningyo initially presents as offbeat but simple enough; in fact, its greatest strength is likely how convincingly the premise is established and how long it goes before hints of the story's true darkness begin to seep through and command attention. Earlier foreshadowing is enough to provide the reader with a flash of insight into the continuity of the overarching timeline and details of the mermaid hunt itself, but does not go so far as to give away the darkness lurking just under the surface. It's just enough to hint that there's more than the reader is initially told, only to be inevitably forgotten as the plot moves along -- until the payoff, at least.

Although far from bad, the art is probably the weak point of the series. The girls -- both the heroines and the mermaids -- resemble each other so strongly that it can be tricky to tell them apart without other clues present, and at times even difficult to follow the action. For anyone familiar with a handful of Yoshitomi's other works, the designs' similarities to those that turn up in his girls love works may also be offputting, and even those who aren't may find the generic cute factor out of place in a horror story. Nonetheless the artwork is not bad by any means and does convey the story; the cuteness suits the characters themselves well enough and even provides an eerie dissonance once things start getting creepy.

As expected from a story limited to three chapters, characterization is decent but not exactly elaborate. For the bulk of the story Haruko and Yoshiko's personalities are painted in such broad strokes that they can come off as relatively generic and even interchangeable. Nonetheless toward the ending there is sufficient development to provide Yoshiko with palpable depth, and the suddenness of the personal revelations only serve to heighten the impact of the series' true horror elements. By comparison Haruka's characterization seems underdeveloped, but as the narrative focus shifts from her to Yoshiko this works subtly to impart Yoshiko's view of Haruka; simple, slow, and ultimately uninteresting, just as she is shown to the reader.

School Ningyo is the kind of series that can appeal to a wide range of audiences. Although its primary audience is that of horror fans, it lack of overtly frightening imagery and its gradually developed creepy aspects can lend appeal to those who don't normally seek out horror, or even those who spook easily but want a beginner's horror story to test the waters with. And while its small chapter count does impart limitations on the story overall, it's really the perfect length to draw in anyone who wants to take a stab at a story that's quirky and creepy in just the right ways.

Juuou Mujin no Fafnir review
This is my first review so bear with me!

I thought this was a great concept and I really did want to enjoy it a lot. But I am going to have to give it a generous 5 rating. I’ll write some pros and cons:

Pros:

Nice concept for a story

The lingo and terminology for the story’s sci-fi aspects were well described and easy to understand.

The art was good, and not overly fanservicey for a harem.

Cons:

The story was very poorly executed. Not only that, but I had this feeling midway through the 4th and final volume that the ending was going to make it worthwhile. Instead, there was a cliffhanger and not much was resolved. I know this is based on a light novel, and I am not sure if the novel was still ongoing, but either way, it left me unsatisfied.

Very under-developed and almost identical characters. Yuu was a very generic male protagonist, his sister was unlikeable to me for the most part, the writer did not help me sympathize with Iris enough to care what happened to her, and the rest were pretty much just in the background. I feel that I could have really like Firill and Ariella had they been given a backstory or even more lines.

The harem element also fell short. I do enjoy harems because of the variety of female characters we get, but these girls were neither relatable nor charming in my opinion. I always knew which girl Yuu would pick. Not that it isn’t obvious in most harems, but I like when the protagonist wavers somewhat. It makes it more realistic for me.

Overall, this one is skippable in my opinion. It is never a good thing when you are happy a manga was so short. This didn’t stand out in any of its listed genres and was very average.

5/10

Mizutama Puzzle review
There's nothing to be spoiled when the synopsis gives everything away, but all you need to know is that Mizutama Puzzle is a very standard but cute (even endearing) Josei manga that delivers everything it needs to in its two short chapters, so you won't get disappointed reading it.

Its main strength is mainly in the artwork. To be honest, the whole reason I've bumped it to a 6 is because of just how gorgeously drawn the woman's design and facial expressions are. From my very subjective standpoint, Tamako is a 10/10 career woman, info of which is probably not helpful but was important in my enjoyment while reading. Even more, she's different from other Josei female protagonists in that she's much older than the guy (8 years older), acts like it, has a grounded, weary personality and wow, she is just gorgeous!

It is also interesting to note that this is Hidaka Shoko's first manga without any sort of male/male romance or relationship. Now if you don't know about Hidaka Shoko, she's a popular author of the shounen-ai/yaoi genre and the creator of two of my favourite mangas of all time (Hana wa Saku ka, Yuuutsu na Asa), which is how I came across this manga at all. The fact that Tamako is older than the male MC (who looks suspiciously like a few of her other gay characters) is humour not lost on me, as it's a consistent favourite trait across all her stories of hardworking, weathered, older men struggling with the idea of being infatuated with younger guys.

Maybe that's partially why I'm so in love with Tamako, as she's an inversion of a trope Hidaka likes to use. Anyways, you won't be disappointed reading Mizutama Puzzle! But I can't promise that it'll be your fav either. It's overall a good romance manga, but take a look at Hidaka's other work and her main strengths as an author will show up more.
