Solo Leveling review
I discovered MAL back when I didn't have much of an interest in anime and manga. I remember being confused after seeing the top lists since they were full of names I had never seen before. Over the years, I've kept these lists in my mind as a best-of when it comes to each medium, but after reading this holy shit have I been proven wrong (#14 overall and #1 manhwa at the time of writing this). I started going through Solo Leveling because its Korean origin intrigued me, but also because I saw it mentioned on a forum as an example of manga drawn in color.
Art wise it hardly disappoints, it starts off great and it only get better as it goes on. The fight scenes in particular are impressive, they ended up being what kept me reading for the most part even though they are incredibly predictable due to story reasons. All other aspects aren't as grand however, which diminished my overall enjoyment.
The story drops the ball almost instantly by making the protagonist the only character who is able to become stronger through a system of quests that he gains access to after a near-death experience in a dungeon (the "why" hasn't been explained yet). There just isn't much that can happen after this, obviously he's going to grind it out, it also doesn't help that these quests give him insane rewards. You can safely throw out all the usual buzzwords at this webtoon and they would all fit: wish fulfillment, derivative, power fantasy etc. It's somewhat salvaged in some of the later chapters, but I just can't get over how boring the story is for most of its length.
The characters aren't much better either. The only one who is relevant for an extended period of time is the MC, everyone else is quickly forgotten after they've served their purpose. The MC himself, is kind of... shallow, I guess? You only have to read chapter 0 to realize that there's nothing super interesting about him. There is an attempt made at giving him a good motive for doing what he does, his mother's condition, but that isn't mentioned much apart from the beginning and late chapters of the webtoon.
I probably would have enjoyed Solo Leveling quite a bit more in my early teens when I was still addicted to Metin 2 and loved to self-insert, but as it stands I can't give this that high of a score, and I definitely don't agree with the many people claiming this webtoon to be a masterpiece or to have a really unique story. I just don't see it.

Solo Leveling review
WARNING! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS!

Solo Leveling is a manhwa that always baffles me whenever I hear someone talk about it. They usually like to say nice sounding buzzwords whenever they praise it, but never bother to actually expand on it. It's always at the front page of whatever site or app you're using. But when I myself read it, it felt like I was reading a completely different manhwa than the one everyone was talking about. Let me break down the different aspects of the manhwa:

Art 8/10: Art is the one and only aspect I can praise Solo Leveling for. It's undeniable that it has fantastic art and I believe this is the second biggest factor for Solo Leveling's popularity (I'll get to the biggest factor later on). The shading and coloring is fantastic. The reason I have art at 8/10 instead of higher is because of the lack of details and background.

Story 3/10: Story...What story? The premise is that gates have appeared around the world with different levels of dangers within them. So they employ hunters to go into the gates and dispose of the danger within. We follow Sung Jin-Woo, a low ranking hunter who suddenly gains a power that allows him to grow stronger through quests and he quickly becomes a S-Rank hunter.

I'm gonna be honest, the first like 15 chapters were actually entertaining. And I thought it was gonna turn out to be a really good manhwa. The gate we entered in the prologue was so different than how they are presented in the rest of the manhwa. There were rules to be followed and if not followed it would mean death. This is not at all present in later gates, in later gates its basically just different monsters in different environments. Which means the gates themselves are not at all interesting after the prologue which is a shame cause you had this sense of dread and mystique surrounding the gate when they entered it for the first time.

Now I've only really touched on the prologue and gates. So how does the story develop after the prologue? Well...It doesn't really. We simply follow Sung Jin-Woo as he goes into different gates and strengthen himself at an insane speed. It just uses the same formula over and over again. He goes into a gate, something unexpected happens, for instance the gate was more dangerous than it seemed. He handles it with ease despite the difficulty change. And then rinse and repeat. It was very disappointing to have him become so extremely strong so quickly. There was no real sense of progress. One second he's the weakest and another second there is literally no threat in existence that can phase him.

Also a lack of overarching story makes it hard to be motivated to continue. There's no real goal Sung Jin-Woo set for himself. They did slightly touch on his mother being ill and he needing to heal her. But they barely explored his relationship with his mother or anything like that. It was more just a dumb reason for him to enter a gate. And it was resolved with ease.

Character 1/10: Now we get into the absolute worst part of Solo Leveling. The characters. Mainly Sung Jin-Woo himself. I mentioned earlier about the biggest factor for Solo Leveling's popularity, and this is it. That might sound like a praise, but it's definitely not. Sung Jin-Woo was made to be as bland as humanly possible so that people can insert themselves into him and live out a power fantasy. We barely know anything about Sung Jin-Woo. He doesn't have any real motivation that drives him. He doesn't have any clear morals. In fact, he doesn't really have any emotions at all. Almost every single panel he is in he will make the same generic emotionless edgy expression. He almost never smiles, laughs, look scared, nervous or anything like that. His expression is always like he's watching a mediocre movie cause his girlfriend wanted to see it.

He has no development at all either. He goes from being the generic weak main character that's surprisingly brave when the situation calls for it into the generic edgy overpowered main character. There's no transition. And even after he has become overpowered nothing still develops him. And besides, there's nothing to push him into development since the arcs never presents him with a dilemma that forces character change.

As for other characters, there aren't really any notable ones. They introduce some new characters each arc but then they just kinda forget about their existence and you never see them again. At this point I've stopped remembering the name of the characters because they've proven time and time again that there's no point to it. I also have a problem with how much they're pandering and using certain characters (mainly female characters) as tools for this. What I mean by this is that Sung Jin-Woo is made to be the ultimate edgy overpowered main character that you can self insert yourself into for a power fantasy. And they also uses characters as a tool to reinforce this, like him needing to rescue every female character as soon as they are about to get hurt (all the while the male characters gets slaughtered left and right).

Pretty much every female character he meets will at some point be rescued by him and/or fall for him. For instance there is one female character that is a bit obsessed with him cause he "smells" different than other people. And at another point where he's murdering monsters suddenly the last monster surrenders out of fear. And what do you know, that monster turns out to be a super hot monster babe that falls for him. All characters are just tools used to put Sung Jin-Woo himself up on a pedestal or as a measuring stick to see how overpowered he is.

Enjoyment 3/10: As you may already have figured out, my enjoyment for this manhwa is not really high. None of the characters are memorable, the arcs are uninspired and had no real purpose except to make the main character stronger. The main character himself was dull. Except early on in the story where it was actually interesting and he had emotions and there was a sense of overall dread.

Overall 3/10: I really can't give this any higher. Remove the art which is its only praiseworthy point and all you will be left with is the same generic self insert edgy overpowered main character power fantasy that has all the ladies fall for him. There's nothing memorable at all about this manhwa.

Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria review
"Do you have a wish? This is a box that grants any wish."
"Kazuki Hoshino, I'm here to break you."
"We are surrounded by soft, sweet, and pure white despair."

The Empty Box and The Zeroth Maria is a dark story about a flawed wish-granting device that causes trouble for our protagonist Hoshino and Otonashi.

Settings:
The story took place around Ikebukuro, in which a district of Japan. The settings are mostly involving just one tileset at each volume, mostly around the school. But the story are somewhat unique that you will not be bored despite being so.

Plot:
The story begins when a transfer student called Aya Otonashi, that have just transferred to a a school and intends to 'break' Kazuki Hoshino, a normal boy in which likes umaibo snacks and heavily attached to his daily life, right after her introduction. She claimed that it's her 13,118th transfer. She then told Kazuki about the existence of box in which could grant any wish, and that they're trapped inside a box and must find and stop the culprit, because some tragic incident happened involving the box, in which every box design was the symbolizations of the 'owners' characteristics, as it's their wish. Because of this, Kazuki's 'daily life' ruined. As the story goes, stress, depression, identity crisis, moral dilemmas, how a seemingly perfect system flawed heavily, and even death occurs. HakoMari managed to give a heavy thrilling, sinister, and surreal athmosphere as you read it. There's also so many other unexpected plot twists too, but I avoid of telling them so that you can enjoy HakoMari at it's fullest.

Art:
Nothing Much to say here, same as other Light Novels, there are only few illustrations about it, it somewhat surreal, and it's good IMO.

Characters:
This is one of the most interesting part of HakoMari IMO. There are many characters here and most of them are well developed, in which a character that takes a main role on a volume may recurring at some next few volume, either be a protagonist or an antagonist. I can also say that all of the characters are well developed, as how their backstories such as tragic pasts, how they deal with the 'box', their involvement on mind games, ulterior motives, how their personality changes as more box involved around their life, and their aftermath. I think almost every characters tend to have spoilery stories so I also avoid to told it more. Such tragedy happened in almost every characters and you may even shocked or shed some tears.

Enjoyment:
Couldn't expect more from this story, it's a brilliance IMO. I glued at this story, even when I was a bit sleepy, HakoMari managed to make me stay awake when I read it. Even the tiniest bit of comedy managed to make me laugh as I read this story. Also, I enjoy this story because of it's not focused just on one characters (I don't really like stories that only develops 1 character) To be honest, I can say that this is the current Magnum Opus story I've read so far. Completely mindblown.

I highly recommend for you guys who are fans of time traveling stories like Madoka Magica or Steins;Gate, and Survival or Mind Games like Death Note or Danganronpa to read this LN. And if these LNs was sold in your local bookstores, I recommend you to just buy it, because it's a bit sad that such a Masterpiece not sells pretty well in Japan, as this story is 'different' than most LNs.

Okay I think that's all for my reviews, thanks a lot for reading and I hope you enjoyed my review!

Shuriken to Pleats review
I'm literally only writing this review because I saw this manga has none and I kind of felt bad for it, but I also feel responsible to prepare you for what this manga is if you ended up here for whatever reason, like wanting more Matsuri Hino manga, expecting this to be similar to Vampire knight, etc.

Story - 3

I'm one of the people that dived into it only because it was Matsuri Hino's new project after Vampire knight ended and I seriously expected it to at least reach the same level of expectations, mostly because it sounded like something nice and something that I could enjoy. Well, yes, for the first 4 chapters the manga was nice, but then the disaster befell it. Maybe it was my fault for having expectations, but it literally felt like trying to fit a tree branch into a matchbox. Beneath everything, I can see potential, but the execution was all over the place and the story of the seeds is questionable.

There were a lot of moments when the characters had weird stuff to prioritize when they should be concentrating on something else entirely and more urgent businesses at hand. Was it for comedy purposes? I am unsure and that confusion led me to not take the story seriously not even when I was supposed to. I'm not a fan of random mood switches and I will never be able to conceive them. You laugh when you have to laugh, you are serious when you have to be serious and this manga did badly to cope up with that.
(Just how can I laugh over highschool issues when I know that a character is dying? And i put this question to you, readers of this review. ) I can laugh to distract myself from an issue that I don't want to face, but here? it was just blatantly ignored for half manga just because... reasons?

It doesn't end there, there are also certain conveniences to speak about, but what is a rushed story without conveniences? I don't know what happened, but I strongly feel like Shuriken to Pleats did badly during the first chapters' feedbacks and Matsuri Hino was asked to give it a closure in no more than 6 chapters. And if that's the case then i really feel bad for her.

I feel like giving the manga props, however, for trying to portray the love between a young girl and an older guy, even if lacking in substance. That's not something that I see often in manga, so I was impressed just because this love was never forgotten. I'm aware this opinion might not be something that the mass would share with me; maybe an older guy x younger girl pairing makes some of you feel uncomfortable, but not agreeing with it and ignoring it exists are two different matters.

Characters - 4

There's really not much to them, despite all of them having potential to become more. There was just not enough time.

As a side note, I felt like Mikage and Mahiro were Matsuri Hino's attempt at YukixAidou (a pairing that I shipped in Vampire Knight for them being adorable together, but of course, that never had any chances) and, without getting too much into it, I thought that was just really cute. Though it might have been just my impression. Mahiro is not an Aidou-wannabe if not only for certain aspects of him, so don't go in expecting a flirt.

For the rest, the characters were often foreseeable, being there at convenient times, managing to find out stuff at convenient times, getting attached to other people way too fast to even count (Mako's affection for Mikage, for example or even Mahiro's affection for Mikage). But they're all fairly likable characters.

Art - 7

Even if very similar to Vampire knight and Mikage is just a copy-paste of Yuki's design, I never am able to look down on Matsuri Hino's drawings. They will always look gorgeous to me. Am I biased because sometimes all the characters tend to have the same face just a different haircut? I guess, but this is why I just think it's "good" and not anything beyond.

Enjoyment - 5

I wasn't outraged by it, but not very entertained either. I was just partly disappointed for the waste of potential and I partly didn't get involved in it enough to care, but it was able to make me smile once in a while. And, again, I really wanted to know how Mikage and Rodd were going for.

Overall - 4.5

Let me be clear, it was "meh". Not horrible, but "meh". I don't think I'll ever go back to this manga and i'll probably even forget the name and the characters soon. The good part is that it's just 11 chapters long, so you can probably read it in like 2 hours if you're a fast reader and move on with your life. Is it worth it? Not really. Maybe partly. But that's subjective.
If you're in for a short manga, it can entertain you, but don't get into it with high expectations.

The Black Cat review
Black cats are known for getting a bad rap, this manga is no exception. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, it follows the events surrounding Pluto, an intelligent black feline aptly named after the Roman god of the underworld and the judge of the dead. He plays a crucial role in the dark grotesque short story that is "The Black Cat."

The story begins with his master coming home from a night out drinking. Having loved animals all his life you wouldn't expect a few drinks to change this. Though you'd be sadly mistaken as he eventually abuses Pluto in a fit of rage. This event soon progresses into the unthinkable happening but I won't spoil the details. As the story is the most redeeming factor of this manga. (A warning in advance, it contains nudity and sexual acts.)

The manga's art I'd say is fair at best. Many times I feel the dialogue doesn't match up with the expressions. The faces seem monotonous and lacking emotion. Though it excels with Pluto and the grotesque scenes. I would have liked to see more Gothic-esque aspects to it.

The characters are of similar quality. While it's based on a short story with little development or characterization. There could have been subtle things added to flesh them out more. Such as more insight into the thoughts of their actions instead of just following the details of the original story.

Overall for being an adaptation. It's fair in the representation despite changing and leaving out details. It could have been much better given a different art style and more characterization. Disregarding these faults it's okay for being a one-shot and does well to promote Edgar Allan Poe's works.
