The young ninja Kagetora has been given a great honor—to serve a renowned family of skilled martial artists. But on arrival, he's handed a challenging assignment: teach the heir to the dynasty, the charming but clumsy Yuki, the deft moves of self-defense and combat.

And yet, Yuki's inability to master the martial arts is not what makes this job so difficult for Kagetora. No, it's Yuki herself. Someday she will inherit her family dojo, and for a ninja like Kagetora, to fall in love with his master is a betrayal of his duty, the ultimate dishonor, and strictly forbidden. Can Kagetora help Yuki overcome her ungainly nature . . . or will he be overcome by his growing feelings?

I've seen that there isn't a full, proper review for this manga. That's a shame, as it really deserves one. So, allow me to remedy that...

What do you get when a guy (young ninja in this case), sworn to a duty that prevents him from having feelings for a certain girl (a dojo princess), develops them anyway? You have the classic forbidden love trope.

Now, throw in some extra romantic interests for both the main characters, crank up the hilarity level, add a few extra cliche plot devices, and let it all simmer till it comes to a boil. You now have 'Kagetora' in a nutshell.

[THE STORY]

The story itself is nothing special - in fact, it's rather cliche. What it has going for it though, is the way the story is executed. There's not too much of any one thing, or too little of another. It's a great medium length, which is a plus. The pacing is superb, never going too fast. It all comes together very nicely and makes for a heartwarming and fun ride. It also has a great ending that sums EVERYTHING up, so nothing is left a mystery.

[THE ART]

The art is nicely detailed. It's not the best I've ever seen, but it does its job well. If it was super detailed, it just wouldn't fit with the fun vibe that is most often present. The pacing and placement of scenes and voice-boxes within each page is well-done; both action and normal scenes all flow well. And lastly, the art is simply really cute.

[THE CHARACTERS]

'Kagetora' has many side characters, and surprisingly, its these side characters that really elevate this manga - not the main ones. For example, Yuki's mother - the authority that is most often seen. At first, she simply seems static, but she slowly becomes a major driving force in the background. To name some others: Yuki's best friend, Kagetora's family, and even the girls that develop interests in Kagetora - a nice turnaround to the typically useless harem element present in a lot of romcoms. All these characters help create a somewhat complex, fun and touching narrative that lacks any major quality-dips in the story, or plot holes that are blatantly evident.

[ENJOYMENT]

I had a great time reading this manga. If you enjoy romcoms, then you probably will too. There's not much more to say.

[OVERALL]

All-in-all, this is worth your time if you happen to like the romantic comedy genre. It's got great supporting characters, great pacing, a solid ending, and the overall length is a simple 11 volumes. It's a bit cliche in places, but in a fun way. My only true complaint would be that it wasn't a bit longer. This isn't because it needed more story (as it ends very well), but because it was so much fun to read that I didn't want it to stop as soon as it did.

I hope this has helped shed some light on whether this manga is for you or not. Have fun reading it if it is!
