Shiori was once a guitarist in a light music club in high school, but her first live performance was dashed when her brother ran away from home with a lot of debt to become a musician in Tokyo.
A decade later, Shiori is now a high school teacher, leading a boring, uneventful life and paying off the debt...until she runs into the ghost of none other than famous guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
The story of a 27-year-old woman on her way to becoming a music legend begins here.

Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
I've been reading manga daily since 2016, at the time of writing this review i have almost 100 mangá completed and this is probably the most fun i've had with the media.
The characters are so damn compelling, the story hits you right on your feelings, the artwork is phenomenal, it is funny, entertaining, wholesome. Although it is a seinen, don't expect sexual violence or these kinds of stuff that's usually in seinen mangá. This is a Soft Seinen mangá. The worst part is that i'm not even a huge rock fan, i was always the more kind of hip-hop guy when i was younger. My dad was a big David Bowie stan but that was it. Unfortunately to me - the first "Jimi Hendrix Experience" i had was back when i first started reading manga in early 2017 with the non animated at the time Jojo's Bizarre Adventure part 5, Vento Aureo. Fugo, one of the side characters in Vento Aureo, has a stand named after Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. That's when i first heard him. Fast-forward some years and i read a mangá about his story, some nerd curiosities about him like he being just so good that he covered a certain Beatles song after only hearding it once. Some really neat stuff. Be aware that the story isn't about Jimi Hendrix, it is about the emancipation of Shiori Honda, our main character, and hers students, or like i grew up used to because of One Piece, her nakamas. If they suffer, they suffer together, if they cry, they cry together, if they smile, they smile together. It is just such a cute message. The bad part is that the english scanlator is pretty behind the monthly (i believe it is a monthly release). The latest chapter available as of right now is chapter 36 from Volume 8 and there's already a volume 14. One thing though, there are some mangá that no matter how great, won't ever become a anime series, some because of author reasons like Yotsuba, some because a anime simply wouldn't suit the story like in Oyasumi Punpun, and in this case they would need to have so many copyright licenses to play Jimi Hendrix stuff and Nirvana stuff. There's a pro to never having a anime adaptation, though. The songs the main characters present will always be just as mindblowing as they are in their world in your imagination, I don't recommend this as a first time mangá exactly because of this, i think some people will be turned off because they have to actually think to enjoy this a little more. The art and panneling in this mangá are simply breathtaking. Please, give this a read. Remember you don't need to enjoy rock to enjoy this, to enjoy a superb story. |
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
I'm gonna make this blunt; this is the dumbest, yet the funniest manga I've read. I'm not even done with it and I love it. As a Hendrix fan myself, I could never expect to tell my friends, 'Jimi Hendrix is my favorite manga character.' Well, this put the sentence in my head.
If you're expecting a deep story with exquisite characters and an in-depth analysis of Hendrix's music, I don't know why you would expect that from this... If you're like me; open minded and always willing to be entertained by dumb things, this will probably entertain you for a long time. Now, if we can get something like this with Stevie Ray Vaughan... |
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
When I first read this manga as blues rock n roll and metal lover. I always conceive myself, that the legendary musician rock music are still alive. When I saw a chapter about Jimi Hendrix played with Kurth Cobain, feels like it actually happen in real life. Jim Hendrix play "Smell Like A Teen Spirit" with his psychedelic guitar style and Kurt play "Purple Haze" with power of grunge would created a great masterpiece.
This manga makes me always that all great rock musician not only member 27 club such like John Bonham, Bon Scot, Syd Barret and every member still life somehow. Sweat spill on stage. Powerful lyric sang from their mouth. every live concert they played that I always watch. all of that always remain me that rock is not dead, and blues will help them being remember. I hope this manga can be done. If this manga got anime adaptation, it would be a great masterpiece (however it will be hard, because of copyright). Speaking of 27 club members, I hope the author can make character of Robert Johnson and Amy Winehouse on this manga |
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
A reminiscence of a dying living legend mixed up with an Ala' Orthodox jazzy feeling among the blues who resent with a spirit counterpart of a ghost, A live soul of music.
Bizarre top notch musical jack juxtapose characters with redeeming melody of undeniable feeling kicks up with a coastal experience down the path of crossroads Instead getting a vibes of Robert Johnson's vintage of crossroad, Shiori Honda despite leaving her own career who got retired by playing guitar again due to lessons. Building up the possible character traits plus the mixed up jack-in emerges living inside and furmost soul. Contradicting an unanonimous tale between a former legend Jim Hendrix, was non other than a prolific at blues music, and his early death was such a great loss for the Rolling Stones Of Magazines. Through his own era, his career were twice revolting than living in the music world of set geniuses and become a roundabout number 1 greatest guitarist in history. As well as numerous stories and tales with similar narratives and arcs, It follows the concepts of the true path of musician who takes a huge solitude but relentlessly gives such sorrowful yet controversial rhythm by following the upon depths of modern blues. More than enough to be a fiction or just myth, cause it attains more archetypal narrative that defines cultures other than the one out of which it originally grew. while more deeply infused with philosophical and literary culture than other versions of the legend, shows that the basic narrative of such stories resonates deeply with people in varied and diverse cultural contexts. |
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
I love this manga. It has a fair amount of tropes and the premise is hamfisted in the beginning, but it really mirrors the struggle of following your passion. Maybe I'm reading this at just the right time in my life, but if you're someone who struggles with the choice to either follow a creative path or take the safer route, this will hit all your buttons.
The characters are flawed, fun, and refreshing. The Rock ghosts feel very unique and there are a lot of call backs to people to love their music/personalities. Art really surprises me by being out of this world gorgeous when it needs to while normally keeping a very realistic style. The story feels like it should be predictable, but this manga isn't about the power of friendship or the love of music carrying you through to legendary stardom status. This really breaks down its characters with the hard realities of working hard even when everything, including yourself, is against you. it's the kind of life that kills you by 27, and it feels like it. |

This manga is such a joy to read I get to re-listen all the rock music that I have listened in the past and appreciated a bit more. Here are the scores I put.
Story 10- I really love the story of a teacher who is seen as someone that their are insignificant but has a different side to her that no one expects in which she forms a rock band with the help of Jimi Hendrix (a legends rock star). Also I love that the mentors are all rock stars that pass at the age of 27. Art 10- I love the art style even with the foreign characters Character 9- There is a lot of good character development and I like how some chapters focus on the characters hardships of strengthening their musical skills to become the best rock band. Enjoyment 10- this manga really made me listen all those rock songs that I enjoy in the past like Nirvana, The Cranberries, Bon-Jovi and many more Overall it’s a solid 10 |
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan review
This manga is based on an interesting premise -- a teacher who lived mostly an ordinary life meets with the spirit of one of the greatest guitarists ever, Jimi Hendrix, who helps bring out her musical soul. Through her passion and drive, she cobbles together a group of disparate kids to make a band in order to have a great performance.
The story itself is interesting and the subject is engaging. It's a highly fun read that I think can immerse readers fairly easily. It's too early to tell much with the story, but so far, it is fairly good. Unfortunately, while the premise is very strong, I think the weakness itself are the actual characters. The main character, Shiori, is done well enough, if a tiny bit cliche, but virtually everyone else are basically manga tropes. Characters with hidden passions, misunderstood delinquents, silent talents, and etc -- all of these people mocked by various people who rudely and ignorantly laughs at them only to be stunned when they played...then they go right back to mocking them. We also have the people who decides to derail the group our of jealousy, fear, or other plain silly reasons. This is, of course, done to give readers easy antagonists. The group, of course, ignores all of this and plows on in order to simply make friends and, with the power of friendship, create fantastic music that will change everyone's minds and make their dreams come true. As I said, basically manga tropes. Which is a shame. How often do we see such a premise in manga? So I had high hopes that the author would do a lot of interesting things we normally don't see. However, as I also said, it's really too early to tell much with the story, thus it's also too early to tell if the characters and everything outside of the premise remains weak. I guess the short of it is that the premise is excellent and the story still carries a lot of potential depending on where it goes. I really do hope to see much from this. |
