Silver review
If you like drama, this is the manga for you. I admit I loved it, (read it three times, to be honest) even though it has so much cliche and unnecessary smut. I'm a sucker for a good old fashioned "revenge plot" stories.
Story 7/10 This manga is based on Penny Jordan's (English writer, mostly romance) novel "Silver" and I didn't like it at all, the manga is way better. I gave it a seven because the quality drops in the end, and there are parts where the plot is dragged on too much for my taste. From the summary, you can get the conclusion that this is, in fact, a soap opera. A good one. Characters: 9/10 I loved all the characters, (yes, even the heroine, goodness gracious, although I wanted to smack her few times in the end). My favorite has to be Jake, the poor fellow was put through shitstorm, but then again, all the charas were. Especially Geraldine, aka. Silver. Now, as for the "evil ones," I actually think they are done fine, realistic even. The asshole Charles is not a typical villain. There is that "gray area" which makes every character more relatable, and all in all, there is a development in each of the main characters. Art 10/10 Don't know about you, but I adore Kazuko Fujita's art. Enjoyment 8/10 I measure my enjoyment with one simple fact: did it keep me glued, wanting for more. Example: Let's just read another chapter (9 pm)... Later: Oh boy, just one more... (3 am). xD Overall 8/10 Quick and easy read, makes you want more and more until you reach the few chapters in the end. Still, if you are a fan of josei genre, this is a must read for you. |

So Silver is a story about a rich girl who falls in love with her cousin, Charles, who is only after her for her money and proceeds to kill her father after which, she decides to get revenge. The story reminded me of The Count of Monte Cristo. Her life sucks for a bit, she completely changes herself and goes about getting her revenge, but this is more about romance and takes place in modern times.
The pacing of the story seemed about right. It didn't feel rushed and it didn't keep painfully dragging on. The backstory get fleshed out fairly well although I thought they should've had more of her father in it. One annoying thing about the story is that whenever the main character gets into really big trouble, someone always conveniently shows up to save her just in the nick of time. It would've been more interesting for her character if she wasn't always saved. But it only happens a couple of times and doesn't really soil overall experience. There are also some strange coincidences, but by manga standards, it's pretty normal and never seems melodramatic or silly. The characters are all good. I thought the development of the main character was well done, but you only get her perspective. The other characters suffer a bit, one of which you only know as "bad drug dealer girl who killed some people" and that's as far as her character goes. Again, still enjoyable but there was room for more. Also it's a smut manga so you got that too. Most of these scenes are of her "training" to seduce Charles, and her seducing Charles. They're not long, and they fit with the story but they happen frequently. Overall it was an enjoyable read. Fairly low on the drama, but the story is still compelling and interesting. I was never dieing to find out what happens next but I was interested enough to finish it in one sitting. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys smut or if you really want a story about revenge. |

This was a pretty cool manga. It's like a version of the ugly duckling, except this time the duckling wants revenge. If you are looking for a story on revenge, this is the one for you.
I think the story develops pretty well, there is enough of the backstory to put perspective onto everything which helps with the build up. I know some people don't like when things are drawn out, but I think when its a story about revenge, you want there to be a bit of build up and anticipation for the revenge plot to sweeten. You don't want it just served immediately so they did a pretty good job pacing it all. The female character on this one is pretty awesome, they do a good job of displaying various aspects of her character ranging from innocent, sweet, kind, loving to lustful, seductive and vengeful. I also have to say I very much enjoyed the romance and love scenes in this one, they were steamy! It differs from the typical overpowering male forces the female type of scenes that are common in smut mangas, although there is a bit of that, this one adds a few more elements and reverses the roles a bit; which ended up being one of the best scenes in the manga. Overall, this one is worth a read. The art is good, pacing is good, and the story development is also done well. |

I was first introduced to this story through "Gold", which is written by the same author. After reading "Silver," I can only say that silver is much better than gold.
The plot was much better and always kept me on my toes along with that beautiful art. The character developement compared to "Gold" was also much better as you can see how Geraldine grew from an extremely naive 14-year-old girl to a clever woman. One thing that I really did not like about this story was the fact that she was in love with her cousin, not that I have anything against it, but Geraldine was completely oblivious to the point where everything Charles said was true. However though Charles may seem like a, pardon my French, bastard throughout the whole manga, his last words really made me in a way depressed about the ending itself. And yes, you are all entitled to your own opinion, so let me just say that I actually liked Charles at the end of the story even though he had caused Geraldine so much pain. Overall, I defintely believe that this was a beautiful story that is worthy of rereading more than once. |
