THE BRIDE OF THE WATER GOD review

It has been so long that this manga has been on my list ever since I started noticing all the hype about it couple of years ago. And finally due to the lack of proper readings that I can get my hands on at the moment, I decided to finally give it a try. I am writing this here to inform all the people that will read this that I am certainly not a person that writes reviews but the hype about this manhwa irritated me so much that I am writing this hoping that it will help some people somehow.

Art is simply gorgeous, you can spend some time looking at the each page with appreciation. But story is lacking, it's inconsistent. There is a feeling that something is missing from the beginning till the 143 chapters that I've read so far. And the beauty of the art is just not cutting off that missing part. You find yourself in deep expectation that something big will happen by next chapter and the next but even though it's progressing, storytelling is just not working. You can appreciate the art for some time but when you pass through some six volumes - forty chapters or so, you just find yourself in unclear, somewhat shallow dialogs and a lazy plot, plus all the same drawings of lotus flowers, korean traditional architecture and costumes, moon, butterflies, more and more flowers and so on is just getting way boring and somehow distractive. I had high expectation from this manhwa and had been seeing it in many places very highly rated but in the end it was a disappointment. Of course I will continue reading it till the end but it is just to see how the characters will turn out in the end. I will just keep this in my on-hold list for now, until they finish the scanlation. When all the chapters are done and if I find time plus nothing better to do or read I will continue with the new parts but otherwise I will just skip through the ending to have some closure and that will be all.

Nevertheless, I want whoever is reading this to keep in mind that reviews are rather subjective opinions even if you would really try otherwise. Even though characters were let's say -alright- for me though again I found them quiet empty, story -which was suppose to be the selling point of this series- didn't work out. Story is overall sloppy and hollow, I can hardly feel the love between the leads but just this supposed attraction. The main couple's affection seemed too weak to me. I didn't even understand how, why and when did they even fell for each other! And the reasons they came up with during some dialogs in the story were so contradictory, very empty. I liked the earlier generations way better than the main leads' story. I also have to admit that I really liked the legendary "struggles of the gods" "war in heavens" storyline with all of its historical elements but really wished that it was expressed in a better way. You ought to expect more when there is already 19 volumes and 143 chapters trying to express a story, nonetheless it all fuels my overall disappointment.
