In the world of Remnant, humans and Faunus—human-animal hybrids—carry on their everyday lives despite the omnipresent threat of monstrous Grimm. Dedicated Huntsmen and Huntresses battle Grimm with both customized weapons and their own "Semblances," unique abilities derived from the energy of one's soul. Some warriors also utilize a crystallized energy propellant, "Dust," to bestow their weapons with elemental properties. In this dangerous line of work, rigorous training is required to stay alive. To that end, each of Remnant's four Kingdoms have established schools to properly groom children holding aspirations of becoming licensed Huntsmen.

At Beacon Academy in the Kingdom of Vale, a promising group of future Huntresses make their debut as Team RWBY. Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long each come from different backgrounds and often butt heads as a result. However, when they cooperate, they are a formidable force who have even attracted the attention of Beacon's headmaster Professor Ozpin. Alongside fellow students such as those in Team JNPR, the young prodigy Ruby and her friends engage in adventures which pit them against an extremist Faunus group known as the White Fang. Every explosive encounter also brings them closer to the true villains orchestrating conflicts from the shadows.

Upon entering my local bookstore for the third time, I peered through every shelf in the manga section in search for a interesting light novel to satisfy myself before Nekomonogatari White comes out, and for another volume of Tokyo Ghoul Re.

After a couple of minutes of looking from shelf to another shelf, I finally stumbled upon the RWBY manga, which I thought after reading the first two chapters last time online that it would never be published through one of the U.S. retail stores.

Since I liked the ONA series, I grabbed one copy of the manga, bought it along with Juuni Taisen, and went home so I can enjoy the manga myself.

So after reading the manga, did I feel some sign of enjoyment? In other words, did I love it as much as I loved the animated net series?

Well....not much.

To start off, let me talk about the most important aspect of RWBY which is the story.

Story - 3
Ever since the first two volumes of the animated series, RWBY was known to have a yet developed plot for the whole entire series from the start to endgame. The synopsis of RWBY only shows off only a little bit of what the story is going to about until volume 3 and 4 happened. So, considering this was going to be adapted by a different person, you think that he has some kind of creative process to go about the story, maybe some plans and good ideas. So did he had any original ideas for the plot in this manga?

Not much.

The entirety of the manga is based on the trailers of RWBY - how each character is introduced; peaking our interest for the volume to come.

In other words, the whole manga is FILLER!

They're not even good filler either.
I'm going to be writing this section as a fan of RWBY, but trying not to spoil it.
To put it simply, one filler was uninteresting compared to Weiss's introduction video where she sings a song giving her hints of her life, but then the manga disregard that and just put it straightforwardly, with uninteresting quotes. It shows that the trailer to manga is can't be adaptable if this is the mangaka's writing style.

Another filler, which was Blake's part, made sense at the first part, until it made absolutely no sense. Compared to the introduction trailer (original source material) it made sense why Blake 'did this' instead of that, but the manga decided to get rid of that by not writing why Blake 'did this' instead of that.

And the last filler where Yang's introduction awe factor died out. We have the first three panels of some interesting plot, but it just leaves that there following with another plot. There wasn't anything awesome, or interesting about this filler. We have Yang entering a bar (which I don't really know why there wasn't a security checking her I.D), and then we have action scenes which really doesn't mean anything honestly compared to Yang's introduction trailer. How it ended was different too when, in the manga, Yang just forgets about it and goes off happy...

Finally, we have an original plot which was short...and cute. Nothing special about this one... only three chapters.

Now that's out the way:

Art - 6

Now I can proudly say, comparing from the CG Character designs to the manga art, it looks really impressive. In fact, this is the only thing I can praise out of since the CG models lack any expression and emotion from their faces in the original source material. Action looks intense as it needed to be, and its drawn perfectly.

Although I like the character art....there wasn't much emphasis on 50% of the panels I've read through. From background to panel work, it didn't really have that appeal that it deserved to have .

But what pisses me off is how the mangaka can be extremely lazy when drawing stuff in panels. In some of the panels, there were a lot of unnecessary white space which should have been a background of something instead of being pure white. Speaking of pure white, that also shows the lack of emphasis for some of the panels that needs to be focused more. Some of the panels created aren't even drawn, and panels that only filled spaces for speech bubbles.

Character - 4

I don't really have to explain this one, but if I have to describe the characters by boiling them down to the size of a kettle corn, then I'm just going to say these words:
Average. Shounen. Characters. With. No. Appealing. Texture.
That's all.

Enjoyment - 6

The only reason I bought this manga because I really liked the RWBY animated series, but if this manga's only purpose is to promote the animated series, then it does a really lackluster job at doing so (taking this perspective from a person that never heard of RWBY and starts off with the manga).

Overall - 5

And this is the part where you finally made a verdict on whether or not you want to dump this inside the trash. If your interest peaked because of the manga, then I would suggest preserving it for a little while, but if you weren't interested then I suggest taking this to the landfill where it deserved to be.

RWBY

This is not on MyAnimelist by the way. Unsure how, but not officially considered an anime..

There are 6 season here. The main writer Monty Oum wrote Seasons 1 - 5, and then some other guy stepped in for the final season. There is a reason why I don't care to understand who that last guy was.

This anime has the craziest action scenes ever and done completely in 3D graphics engines. It's really nice to look at and allows battle scenes to take it to the next level. I think that's what I appreciated the most. The actual story itself isn't super awesome, though it can warm your feels in humour because of how it attempts to be funny, but knows it's not really that funny. It's like a good friend when you understand he's trying though nobody else would laugh at him.

Ratings time:
Story - 8 - There is a purpose here, which is to grow stronger and fend the city off from an evil that is slowly growing and beginning to destroy the world. I didn't watch it necessarily for the story, but it is done well enough.

Graphics - 10 - Full 3D graphics. Beautiful to watch.

Soundtrack - 10 - Fast paced and intense. Definitely battle oriented and get's the blood pumping.

Characters - 9 - Kind of ditsy and playful. Hard to take seriously, but always in character. Fun to watch and all given a backstory to some extent. Many different fighting styles, and hard to tell which is the most powerful person.

Overall - 9 - Entertaining and fun to watch, especially if you like chaotic battle scenes in very well done graphics.

Recommended - Notice how I didn't mention season 6 in here. It's because season 6 is so far away from mentioning in a positive light that I believe it unworthy of mentioning. In fact, if you would like to watch the characters sit on a couch and talk all day about what they should do next then maybe season 6 is good for you. It's probably not, and I will try to save you from yourself. Pretend RWBY only has 5 season. Then I will recommend it.

Story 8/10
This series is exactly what you'd expect it to be. That said, the story is very "anime." With that in mind I cant say the series stands out much so far. Everything that you'd expect to be in a fantasy anime, you'll find in the RWBY manga. Evil fantastical creatures, yep. Giant Mechs, yep. Cute super powered High school girls, yep. That said, despite the series being predictable it works very well.

Art 10/10
Now what this series lacks in story, it makes up in its amazing art. The series is being illustrated by DOGS illustrator Shirow Miwa. The art is extremely detailed and excellently shows off the wondrous battle scenes that make RWBY what it is. Everything from their clothes and hair to facial styles is much more detailed than its animated counterpart. If i didn't know better, i'd say the manga is the original piece, and the animated work is a cheap fan creation.

Character 10/10
The character development is spot on. It's clear that Rooster Teeth is working closely on this series, as the characters mannerisms and personalities are spot on. The only difference I've seen so far, is that the work mentions that Ruby is afraid of crowds which the animated version does not mention. Though this is a prequel series, so perhaps Ruby will have grown out of this by the time the animated series takes place.

Enjoyment 9/10
So far I've enjoyed the hell out of this series. It's come to the point to where I'm scrambling to my computer as soon as i learn that a chapter has been released. As I read, i find myself begging to find out what happens on the next page, and when the chapter ends, a wall of post-RWBY depression hits. This is only cured by a new chapter being released. That said, this series does update rather slowly. It updates the 19th of each month making it difficult to keep up.

Overall 9/10
Overall, this series is fantastic. if you're a fan of the RWBY web-series then you will certainly love this series. Even if you've never seen the animated series, and you're just looking for a good manga to read, this is one you should certainly pick up. I will be most certainly buying every volume they release. This series encompasses the hopes and dreams of every little Otaku boy and girl foreign to japan that dreams to one day have their own series become popular enough to make it to Japan. This series most certainly marks the beginning of a new era, for anime lovers outside of Japan. The future looks bright. Thank you and rest in peace, Monty Oum.

RWBY is one of the worst mangas I have ever set eyes on.

Taking an animated online series and turning it into a manga wasn't a very good idea in the first place, especially when the animation didn't have a sufficient plot in the first place.

RWBY is basically a compilation of battle scenes with pathetic attempts at backstories mixed into it to try to give the story some 'depth', which made it feel more artificial in my opinion.

Story: 1/10

Horrible, Pathetic, sad excuse for a plot line in a manga. As I stated before, it's basically a never-ending cycle of battle scenes with a few sprinkles of character backstories that didn't make any sense whatsoever.

Art: 4/10

The art was fairly decent but lacked background. They were usually standing in the open void or something in relation to that- and when a battle got intense it would kind of be hard to actually see the characters, and they would constantly be looking cross-eyed, which kind of annoyed me, to be honest.

Character: 2/10

Horrible. Throws random characters at you with little to no backstory and basically continues with the story. Bland background characters, bland main characters also if you ask me. Everyone is majorly overpowered in this manga, and I am not a huge fan of OP characters whatsoever- but if you like OP characters, to be honest, this manga may float your boat.

Enjoyment: 2/10

Bored throughout the whole manga. Dull, bland, basically nothing happens- no real threat or conflicts besides the battle scenes.

Overall: 3/10

Nothing really else to say besides the fact that this manga is very lackluster and lacks everything in every department.
