Berserk review
Please someone tell me why this is considered a materpiece. I have read to Chapter 90 and I still do not understand why its a masterpiece. All I can say that is has a great story, strong cast of characterse. But I mean, a masterpiece? Why?

Story 8/10:
It a great medieval story, with slight political intrigue at certain times, gory fights and a turning point that is quite interesting. That is if you have never read anything like it. The 8/10 is really if ou read it from golden age arc. If you read it from black swordsman arc i would give it a 6.5.-7. I mean cmon, we know griffits gonna be bad, we know Guts is gonna lose everything. Really? That's how you start a story? I get why letting us know about a world of demons is important, but why should we alrady know taht we lost everything? When I read the supposed turning points, none of it was a surprise. If we are really basing it purely on the turning points, its not even the best and is not the only to do it. Tower of God did it well and without spoiling anything. Even the webtoon hooky was better at it than this. To me its a decent story line that was ruined by the prologue. Additionally, even with the twist its not a masterpiece at all, a lot of moments in the story are simply to show conquest and fighting demons. Don't get me wrong, its not bad, but to me storylines that carry some repititon element isn't really a masterpiece. That's why something like Kimetsu No Yaiba to me cannot beat things like One piece, FullMetal, AoT. I really don't get it, is it really just because of the more mature themes? Tbh this doesn't hold a candle to more mature fantasy stories. Read Final Empire, Wheel of Time, Way of Kings for a change.

Characters 10/10
Characters were brilliantly done, I get how a character turns from borderline not a good guy to evil. I can see the characters acting upon their past traumas. Its great. no complaints. Unfortunately, I don't read stories especially long ones for character studies.

Enjoyment 6/10:
Tbh I'm not a big fan of the art and the repetitiveness of some of the elements. Additionally, to me the payoffs are not as great as some other manga. So I would say I did not really enjoy the ride, every single chapter was kind of a drag for me.

Berserk review
Story - 10/10
Art - 9.8/10
Characters - 9.8/10
Enjoyment - 10/10
Overall - 10/10

I've been thinking of how to write this review... Of what I rank it in my personal opinion, and where I put it at in my "favorite manga" list. Today I'm finally certain; and I'm ready to write this review.

Berserk is now my favorite manga of all-time, previously tied with Oyasumi Punpun for me. Berserk is the true definition of a Masterpiece. Leaves you wanting more, and wanting to re-read it again... and again and again.

If I had to explain WHY I love this manga, I honestly couldn't tell you. Besides a few exceptions like LotR; I'm not interested in this timeline at all. I don't like medieval, fantasy, stories. I'm more interested in modern time romance/depressing stories, and that's one reason why I haven't read series like Vinland Saga, or One Piece which are 2 critically claimed masterpieces themselves. Though I think Berserk has since changed my interest in what I like.

The amount of characters that you just fall in-love with are so memorable. The amount of influence this game has had on media, movies, games, etc. is just insane. The art may come off to new-comers as messy, and I can speak for this because whenever I flipped through a volume before actually starting it that's what I thought. But you're very wrong. Once you get into it, it all just pops out at you, and you find yourself staring at the panels for longer than usual, in a very good way. Not in a Tokyo Ghoul way, where you're spending the entire time figuring out what's going on.

There truly is no word to describe how good Berserk is, but with that said, it's also NOT for everyone. Especially those who can't stand an incomplete story. Right now, Kentaro Miura is on hiatus with 364 chapters released (yes I'm counting 000a as chapter 1) and it is a possibility he may never finish this story. It's not certain like Vagabond; but it's a possibility. He started when he was 23, and he's now 52 years old as the time of posting this and apparently only 60% done with the story. Unless he really picks up the pace, once he hits his 70's I fear this will reach Vagabond status in meaning the chances of completion are near impossible. With that said, I personally think this is a story too good to pass on, even with the hiatus.

Definitely check out Berserk, even if you're not interested in the timeline. Just give it a try, like I did. You'll thank me later.

Berserk review
Okay, in addition to a review this is also a response to the review that gives a 7 overall.

First I'll start with my review.

The characters, while their design is good there are some issues. The biggest being Puck. I'll try my best not to spoil things, but I'll just say that he had some uses at first such as looking into people's minds and giving us some information on world-building. Now he's literally just comic relief and occasional healing. And I'm pretty sure I'm using literally the correct way. Everyone else . . . they're good, although the fact that two girls are into Guts at the same time is a bit haremish. I don't really have anything else to complain about. The villains are good, they are certainly never cliche. Come on, who would think the Count was cliche?

Next, the art, goddamn the beautiful art. Describing it doesn't do it justice, just look at it.

The story does seem to have it's issues. Namely what I've heard of the long hiatuses that Miura has and that there were 9 years of being on the boat. And the Sea God arc was pretty unnecessary and so were the pirates, it was almost like I was reading filler. Everything else is amazing, I understand the strangeness of the Black Swordsman arc in the beginning then the long Golden Age arc, but honestly I think it shows how fate works in this world pretty well. Although I've heard that the real reason Miura chose to put that arc first was to get attention and start up.

Overall, it's a 9 to me. Great, so great, but not perfect.

Being a medieval-style lover, i like
Being a medieval-style lover, I started looking for a manga with this type of setting ever since I was introduced to manga and anime. Many people suggested Berserk and praised it as a masterpiece. It wasn't long before I saw why.

First of all, it's one of the few manga, if not the only one, where the secondary characters' past, relationships and stories are introduced to you in a way that the plot won't get sidetracked and the focus of the story will still be on the main characters. This adds to the drama and makes the cast more interesting and realistic. And we are talking about a ton of information, but it won't tire you one bit. To be honest, I have never before seen an anime or manga achieving such detail with so little effort and protects the readers from boredom.

The main characters are Guts and Griffith. One is the direct opposite of the other, both in philosophy and style. They start of as good friends that trust each other and develop a strong bond. But in the end, one will betray and another will be betrayed. Besides the "good guys", the villains are not your typical run-of-the-mill bad guy that wants to destroy the world etc etc. Each and any one of them has his own motive and his own story to tell. They are something more than just figures that serve to stop the protagonists' way and eventually, get destroyed by them.

The story walks the border between complicated but easy to understand and chaotic. However, it never slips to either side. The characters might sidetrack from their original goal a couple of times in every arc, but you will never forget what they wanted to do. Berserk's magic will definitely capture you, as you will find yourself enraged and angry in several parts of the story. Also, you will have the impression that Guts and Griffith are locked in a struggle between morality, following your dreams and duty many times as the story progresses.

When it comes to the art, one word would not be enough to describe it. The battle scenes are fluent, realistic, full of energy and it's easy to understand what is happening during a duel. Castle sieges, battlefields they are all depicted with hundreds of soldiers in few frames, but they never become too chaotic for you to understand. A notable element is the expressions in the characters' faces. You will always know a character's emotions by looking at him and even if you have doubts about someone's motives, a look on his face will confirm or not your suspicions.

Keep in mind though, that Berserk is not your average warrior-style manga. Gore is in very high levels while violence is something common. Add sex, rape, and nudity and you got a mature manga. However, isn't that how medieval times where in the first place? There's no need to glorify these things, but there's also no need to create illusions that knights in shining armor were kind, good and rescued damsels in distress out of duty. And Berserk definitely achieves that.

To date, Berserk remains my favorite medieval manga. And I am certain that no other manga any time soon will manage to surpass it. I strongly reccomend it and be certain that you will enjoy it thoroughly.

Berserk feels like two different series
Berserk feels like two different series.

The first, the "Golden Age" arc, is where its acclaim rightly comes from- it easily stands alone as the single best Manga arc I've ever read. Deserves 10s across the board. Reading Berserk is *absolutely* worthwhile for that experience alone- superb, mature characters, fiendishly inventive plot twists, and some beautiful worldbuilding. The way it ends is absolutely heartbreaking.

Then, after the first ~110 chapters? There's, ah, the rest.

The post-Golden Age arc's still enjoyable- and the magnificent art style, if anything, has got even better. The problem's with the setting and pacing- it scarcely feels like the storyline has any idea where it wants to go anymore. The serious, heartfelt tone of the Golden Age arc's faded away, and been replaced with something much closer to a standard shōnen plotline. Guts and Griffith are still about, and the relationship between the two is still fantastic- but just about everything that made the Golden Age arc so distinctive's vastly reduced. The worldbuilding's still spectacularly creative, the sparse moments of actual plot development are interesting, and the characters from the original arc are still around, and develop in unexpected ways- but the feeling of close camraderie that made the Band of the Hawk's stories so wonderful to read about is just gone. What's in its place is a pretty, formulaic string of sequences- roughly summed up as "Guts et al wander into new setting, mysterious phenomenon transforms into eldritch abomination, the party thwack it with magical weapons for a few chapters, then Guts screams and gravely injures himself destroying the monster of the week". That's it- the overarching, beautifully written story of the Golden Age arc's been replaced by something that feels distinctly less... human? Berserk's become a story dominated by the spectacle, rather than the characters- which, unfortunately, has entailed jettisoning a huge part of what made it so wonderful in the first place.

The plot's meandered along at a glacial pace for almost two hundred chapters now. Given the slow rate of chapter releases (three hundred chapters over twenty years?), it's hard to imagine the plot getting anywhere soon.

Scored a "7" with a heavy heart. The Golden Age arc on its own deserves "10"s across the board- but the latter two thirds of the story drag the score down. The soul just isn't there anymore.

Read it, absolutely. Just expect to find the magic trailing off after a certain point.
