Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
I've never wrote a review before but oh boy is this a disaster
Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun is a manga that looks really fun and has a quite unique style. I've been following this manga ever since it started yet it turned out to be a huge disappointment.

Story:
A story about urban legends in a school, interesting at first yet actually just a cliche plot. Most of the time the plot is just Nene getting rescued by her har-- friends. Super unrealistic and has tons of plot holes. This mangas only comedy source is Nene's legs. But pacing is the worst part here, it's been 64 chapters and we still have no idea about what is the relationship between Tsukasa and Amane (and no background of Amane either). So many useless drama that cames out of nowhere yet leaves an impact on characters (you know which I'm talking about).
I have no idea where author is going but I have no hope for it either. 3/10

Characters:
Oh god. Here we go.
You couldn't guess such a horrible mc for a manga like this. The whole personality of Nene is just how horny she is and how she has 'radish ankles'.
Can't do anything on her own and always gets in trouble and waits for help from Hanako. She put herself in danger multiple times to get her dreamy harem. A typical shoujo mc but worse.

I can't really say anything about Hanako because we never got any info about him really. A cool ghost boy with really good patience

Kou. Actually the only one that I can call a character.
His first debut was aggressive yet he quickly developed so much. A very nice boy that cares about his friends and tries his best.

Tsukasa gang is cool but sadly we don't know much about them for now.

Overall there are so much useless/cliche characters in this manga. 2/10

Art:
I think we all can agree that art is the best thing in this manga. While it's cute and original, it's also very detailed and nicely done. The whole reason I started reading this was the artwork and is the reason I haven't dropped it yet. 9/10

Enjoyment:
Well, I tried my best enjoying this manga because of how much I love how it looks- But it was impossible with such plot and mc. 1/10

Overall... 4/10 I can't give a lower point when Kou exists and I really like the artstyle.
This manga was a HUGE disappointment to me, like I said. I had very high expections and none of them were answered. Even so, I understand how this manga is really popular and loved, I'm just really salty :P

I tried my best to explain my views on Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun but I'm nowhere expert in English so I may have not convey my thoughts very well.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
WOAHWOAHWOAH!

Want a fun, compelling story to binge on? Want to enjoy eye pleasing art you can stare at all day? Want to see a good mix of character development and relatability? Want to enjoy every frame and panel in this manga? Well, if so, I recommend taking a peek at this manga because personally, all of this criteria has fulfilled me.

STORY: 10
To me, this story is original in my opinion. Although the idea of having a supernatural partner is an old concept, the way the author molds that cliche into her own special thing in a school setting with little adventures involving supernatural school rumors, is astounding. She takes the story of what many might know as Bloody Mary and turns it into a whole school-wide adventure that I know I've had imaginations of as a child but I have never seen anybody build it into a compelling story. I don't know about you, but I felt loads of different emotions while reading this and I hope you do too.

ART: 10
The art is a cutesy loli kind of style that I usually do not like in my manga. But, this is an exception. It absolutely captures the innocence of the characters yet it also turns the cute to creepy when needed. The landscape and all of the scenery are crisp and vivid even though it is just black and white. You guys should experience the art yourselves, since everybody's tastes are different, but make sure to try it out!

CHARACTERS: 10
The characters are honestly SO ADORABLEEEEEEEEE. I feel like I can hug each lil character in my arms although not all are portrayed as the protagonists. Thinking back now, some may see the character types as cliche with their personalities in the sense of maybe this dude is like the cool popular type or that girl is too clumsy, but the author really did not make me sense that while reading at all. Character tropes are being reused and recycled all the time now, and so far, to me, this manga utilizes the tropes to fit when needed, and there is great character development that I feel like I'm receiving an achievement while reading ^^

ENJOYMENT: 10
Overall enjoyment? AMAZING! I literally did not do anything but read it the whole day (it was winter break D:: no judge plzz ;-;) because the story was so entertaining to read. A lot of the time I was like AHHHHH and WOAHH and PRECIOUSSSSSS and ANFJA VHLF;MCKD,SZAN XSBC. Yeah, maybe I'm just too emotional. I guess this part is up to you guys to decide if you enjoy it or not as well, we all have different preferences.

It might be a bit unrealistic to score all aspects a 10/10.. ahehe, but perhaps it was because I haven't read something so compelling to me in so long, but honestly, give it a try!

Hopefully you can enjoy it like me. Thanks for reading!

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
Toilet Bound Hanako Kun is a very unique manga
Endlessly entertaining, the kind of thing that really puts a smile on my face. Or just makes me feel sad.
Sometimes it’s cute and funny, sometimes it’s dark and depressing.
Not like Made in Abyss, it’s not nearly as gruesome. It’s more subtle with the occasionally dark themes it presents. It’s not really “disturbing” in any way.
The art is amazing, creepy and cute all at the same time. It’s the kind of art that works for comedic cute moments and works for the occasional darker moments. It’s remarkably detailed and consistent, and something that you can appreciate even if you hate the story. The character designs are all extremely cute and unique too.
One big strength in this manga are the characters. They’re all very VERY cute. I have never found myself hating any of them. They’re the kinda characters you want to protecc. I would say the least likable is the protagonist Nene. She’s a bit useless, and in love with being in love. Her defining feature is her radish legs. Yes, really. But despite her more annoying aspects, she’s pretty adorable in her own radish way. Hanako and Minamoto are better, two very good boys with lovable personalities.
The story of the manga is simple with no real overarching story line, at least not at this point in the manga. However, it just works and is compelling enough to keep you entertained throughout. Though the story itself is not the selling point of this manga. The comedy is a bit hit or miss, but overall it all just works.
This manga is very fun to read, and easy to marathon. If you want an entertaining manga to spend time on in times of quarantine, it’s a good read that I would enthusiastically recommend. Easily one of my all time favorites.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun is an enjoyable read, with fun characters, new twists on urban legends and tropes, and beautiful art.

Story - At the beginning of the manga, it might seem like the story will be somewhat episodic or nonlinear. Rest assured, though, a plot does come in to play. Yashiro Nene, a human girl, meets Hanako, a ghost, and the two wind up supernaturally linked to one another and must figure out the mysteries of the school the manga takes place in together. It's not a terribly unusual premise, but the writing makes it fun and interesting nonetheless. As the story progresses, there are hints towards a larger narrative and nicely placed hints as to what may ultimately be taking place. I think, personally, that the real draw of this manga's story is less held by the plot itself and more within the characters. This is in no small part due to the fact that the plot is intrinsically linked to Hanako and company.

Characters - I think this is a very character driven series. Due to that, it makes sense that the characters in this manga are, for the most part, very well done. There isn't a single reoccurring character in this series that I am not at the very least intrigued by. The main trio, which is comprised of a human girl, an exorcist boy, and a ghost are the standouts of the cast. They are the ones we spend the most time with, and both Hanako and Kou are very enjoyable to read about. Hanako in particular is very interesting, as more facets of his character come to light as the story progresses and relationships develop. Even the antagonists of the series are interesting, and I find myself wanting to learn more about them, even when they cause serious trouble for the main trio. I also want to mention that the dynamic of the main trio is super cute. Like, really super cute, yknow?

Character interactions are also very well done, especially within but even outside of the main trio.

One of the only issues I have with the characterization in this series is that Yashiro is a little bit underwhelming as a protagonist. She isn't a bad character, and she is endearing, but she is very centered on the traits of wanting a boyfriend (yes, romance does come in to play) and feeling upset about her ankles. She is also generally in need of rescue in pretty much every situation where there's major conflict. It is worth it to note though that characters do develop within the story, so it's possible these could be changed later on.

Art - The art in this series is amazing, point blank. The cute but flexible art style lends itself well to the setting and doesn't feel like a constraint even in dramatic moments, since it can shift to a more serious version of itself depending on the mood. The characters are adorable and the backgrounds and settings are gorgeous. The black and white pages are clean, crisp, and fittingly detailed or simple depending on the moment, and the rare colored pages are stunning. This manga is honestly worth at least trying out for the art alone.

Enjoyment - As you can probably tell by the text wall, I really enjoyed this series. I read it all very quickly and will probably read it again, too! My favorite aspects are definitely the characters and the art. I went in with basically no expectations or prior knowledge about the series, and ended up finding a new favorite. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Overall, it's a series that's definitely worth trying out. It's got great characters, an enjoyable plot, and cute art all with mysterious and sometimes melancholic undertone. If any of the premise, characters, or art intrigue you, you should give it a shot and see if you like it. For me, it's a solid eight at least, and could probably go up depending on how the series continues in the future.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
I don't think this manga is actually a 10/10, but after seeing so many unfair low ratings, I gave a 10/10. I still love it though, honestly I'm not that much of part of living fandoms so I'm really hyped about it... and god, I love Hanako-kun.

Let's start with the creators. There are two separate people for art and writing, however they're a team and call themselves AidaIro. I find this extremely cute and refreshing. It's not that related with the manga but I wanted it to point it out.

STORY: The story is revolving around a school full of supernatural things and rumors. Our heroine Yashiro Nene, an extremely susceptible girl. She wants to date with an upperclassman whom she barely knows and for this she gets help from a supernatural creature, Hanako-san. Hanako-san is actually a Japanese urban legend, however we see her as a boy in this series.

The story isn't exactly a linear one. It develops with characters, there are many things and subplots going on, but at the end all of them crosses at one point and everything makes sense.

Plot twists, specially the plot twists of last two arcs are enjoyable. It's easy to predict the ones at the start though, I'm not sure if they're counted as plot twists.

Most of the people seem to complain about Hanako-kun's and Tsukasa's past not getting revealed, but that's... nonsense. There are 7 really strong supernaturals in series and we saw their stories blended with our main characters. Hanako-kun was my favorite character in series and of course I would like to know about him, however adding it to these arcs would be really pointless and messy. And, I'm pretty sure when we see their past, it'll be really different from what we imagine and what we think:

Because Iro, our writer is... pretty good. I'm a writer myself and most of the time I'm extremely critical, even to most loved stories in community. Despite that, I really like Iro's style. I read their one-shot stories and JSHK's plot chapters and they were actually really cool concepts with really good plot twists for one-shots. That's why I already have high hopes for those two characters' past and seeing it now would feel really rushed.

Right, now there's only one certain thing bothers me in story and it's short time travels we see. I hope they could actually explain that.

Honestly, I think that serialization -and maybe a bad editor- kind of nerfed Iro's writing. Why? I'll explain my point in next category.

CHARACTERS:

Okay, at first, character designs are amazing.

All of them are extremely stylistic, eyes, hair styles, colors, accessories and flaws... It's really good, pleasing to good at, easy to remember and unique.

Even characters with really small screen time can be easily remembered. So many series have this, but I honestly think that JSHK's are way more pleasant to look at.

Okay, back to characters. Some of their traits are for comic relief, and as an enjoyer of comedy+action package series, it's normal to see some of their traits in a little absurd level sometimes, for comedy's sake. This pretty common, or I'm really used to it as someone who loves Gintama.

Now, all of them are actually pretty okay. They're not one-dimensional. Including ones with so little screen time. Aoi, childhood friend of Yashiro Nene was the biggest example of that with the last arc.

They're many good details and foreshadowings that I wasn't able to realize at first glance. I really like how they explain what it feels like to be dead through Hanako-kun. Characters' concepts, aesthetics, their symbolism is actually pretty good, pleasant and heart warming.

As I said concepts and aesthetics of them amazing. However delivery of them sometimes feel rushed and basic. For example, Mitsuba. His introduction was extremely rushed and unlike most people, I didn't feel that emotional. Like, I love his core but not his arc.

Yashiro Nene is the most nerfed character of all. Her personality was waaay more dimensional, interesting and sympathetic. Iro wrote her way more detailed in their mind, according to pilot chapters, at least. Unfortunately we can't see all of Yashiro Nene in actual series. She's a good person, extremely cute. Even though she isn't that much of good character -she was pretty good at last arcs though and huge it's seen that we'll see a huge character development- I really think that she's heart-warming..? Also, fat ankles sub-plot is actually fresh. You don't see a main character with an actual appearance flaw that often. Same with Hanako-kun. I love the fact that he's shorter than the girl he'll probably end up with.

Honestly, except these two, I don't have a complain about characters. Good concepts, cute designs, they do their part, all of them have their way of meaning and can be complex in a decent level... It's enough to read.

ART: I don't think I need to talk about it. Even the worst reviews said that it's amazing. It's original, really characteristic, I think that eyes are sometimes drawn too big though. Oh, also they're many good panels along with extremely nice covers.

ENJOYMENT: I enjoy the manga and characters- by a lot. There are so many good materials and art to dig in there. I read it really fast, it wasn't boring and I... actually never thought any arc was boring? Pretty smooth.

OVERALL: For the concept and enjoyment I have, I'll gladly rate this 10. Because I'm really, REALLY having a good time. So glad that I read this manga. I recommend it. I think that everyone can find something to enjoy in it.

Edit: I kind of didn't check this while sending it, I'm sorry for any kind of grammar mistakes. Also I didn't want to give any spoilers and bore anyone with an analysis of characters. I hope this review didn't felt too empty, I'm kind of new to this.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
It was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. Starting off with a light-hearted situational comedy with some supernatural sprinkled in, slowly but surely a solid storyline begins to flow in, and it is wonderful. Characterisation is amazing, I ended up getting emotionally attached to all of them, and with all this angsty and dangerous situations that happen to them and them being on the verge of death you get really nervous but also thrilled with finding out how the story will take it turn.
The worldbuilding is really neat, a lot of concepts that get introduced early on appear later in the story and get more important role. I really like dynamics between the characters, they are all memorable and loveable in their own unique way.
There is a nice amount of angst thrown in, and some readers may relate to the motives and situations characters end up with. (i genuinely cried during the picture perfect arc, mei's story really resonated with me and it hurted me on a really deep level i can't even describe) You may end up getting lost in all this amount of game-changing events happening in every chapter and all these revelations that you hardly have time to process, but they are brought back later so you have time to think about them. One of the things I really disliked about the story is that Hanako ends up dragging Yashiro out of literally any danger, and some ongoing jokes are getting annoying really fast (kitsune udon isn't brought up anymore, but one more daikon legs mention and i'll snap), sometimes writers even forget about some plot points. But honestly, for me it didn't really matter because you don't think about it while reading.
Did I mention that the artstyle is legendary? So, the artstyle is legendary and character designs are done incredibly well. Color pallete on official illustrations and covers is really unique and the atmosphere has its own charm, it's like you're reading a fairy tale from your childhood that grew up with you. In this world, even if the good will always win, there's no guarantee that everybody will meet their happy ever after.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
Art: 9/10: It's cool and gothic, honestly the only reason why anyone will stay to read this

Story: 1/10: Can't rant more about this. It started off with a pretty cool premise. Different mysteries and our main character trapped in a toilet, yeah?

The only problem is that our second main character has everything worked out for her. It's pretty much all your typical manga issues: everything being concluded with a simple swing of the knife, a single talk to from our second main character resolves the whole isssue that has been bothering our villains for a Long time, or coaxing enemies into submission; events conveniently happening whenever it suits the author, like if mc1 says not to let side character touch mc2, you know for sure mc2's gonna get touched for sure.

It's all very predictable with the Friend turned into enemy troupe, and enemies turned to friends, most ostensibly by the Mary Sue. Except, in this particular work, the coolest villains whose background story get explored immediately after their defeat will thereafter be flung into the abyss and be forgotten till the author decides to conveniently pop them up again.

Need I also tell you that (spoiler) mc2 gets turned into a fish whenever she touches water? The author conveniently skips all parts about how she bathes, and how she hides that from her parents. I know this whole story is supposed to focus heavily on the school setting, but it's almost as if this world is a vacuum where the only characters are our three mcs. Honestly, there's not an ounce of realism in this world at all.

Character: 1/10 I would give a 0 if that is possible.

Mc2 aka. The girl: can be summarized as lovesick fool, plus radish. Literally, when she goes into a hell where students are tormented by their innermost fear, hers shows up in the form of people calling her a radish. Seriously, does she not have other problems? The author brings the joke too far in terms of constantly reminding us she has oddly shaped feet, making every single character point that out upon meeting. Fun fact: she was only bullied for it in one panel, by that one minor character that showed up only on one page.

This character is unrealistic, stupidly naive, and you'll find everyone falling in love with her for no reason. She has your special Naturo speak no jutsu, except in most cases, you won't find her doing a single thing besides flailing, floundering, worrying needlessly till someone takes pity and treats her nicely. She is the whole flaw in this manga, because you'll find the author pulling every reason out of their ass to make the two other main characters fall in love with her. Absolutely horrendous.

Mc3: the student boy minamoto: believable. It's entirely refreshing how much he stands up for himself and others when the story decides to focus on him. That's a tell on how abused we are as readers, because we're constantly forced to view things from the pov of our pitiful useless mc2. His growth is the one thing that keeps me reading on.

Mc1 the ghost: the highlight of the show. Little titbits about his past keeps getting revealed along the way. Teasing and fun in a way that is not always harmless but completely intriguing, he is the saving grace up until you realise the author has decided to dedicate an entire arc to him playing martyr and playing the role of the villain just to save our useless ignorant mc2 again.

Honestly, let's just stop it with the whole mc2 thing already. I get how useless she is that she needs everyone to protect her, but honestly? This whole story is turning into a self-fulfilment fic where the mc2 self insert is trying to collect a harem of knights to protect her. Frankly, I'd enjoy it much more if the author starts being real and treats this story that way. That's clearly their drift.

Also, I'm not exactly sure on the genre of this manga. Is this romance? Is there supposed to be a love triangle between all the mc? Because with the way mc3's heart goes flying out whenever mc2 does something and mc1 plays the whole role of the darling knight for mc2, I find it dubious that this is even your friendship troupe. I dread the more I read, because this is clearly not the content I signed up for.

Also: misaki: honestly, what can I say? He's that one cockroach that refuses to die and the more he returns, the more he ruins the perfect character you wish the author had left dead in the beginning. Also, he's soft on mc2. Need I say more?

Overall, enjoyment: (0) 1/10. I read this because the anime will be coming in 2020, but I'm left wondering why I wasted my time.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review

-this will probably only make sense if youve read the manga fully-

aaaa, to be short i prefer the manga over the anime. Its so cute and absolutely gorgeous, im always excited when a new chapter comes out. I think the problem alot of people have with it is there isnt a strong plot, but honestly i really love that about it. Think about it this way, maybe not all manga and anime HAS to have a strong plot. Like, theres a plot buried under there, but theyre just kinda enjoying their lives. Its cute, feels really in tune to the generation. I think it has possibly the best humor out of the mangas ive read, and i like the characters too. Hanako has a dark backstory and could easily be bad, but hes enjoying his time and taking it easy, yknow? Its chill, comfy. Not action packed or anything. Nene is a fun character, i honestly like her. I think she would be the kind of person i would talk to occasionally, but wouldnt be good friends with. Shes girly but not passive, and i like that she has a main goal of obtaining love. Its kind of a magnified version of high school girls. We dont know much about kou, and im kinda curious about his family, but im sure hell get an arc eventually. I like how the supporting characters have an important role in the story. Nene’s friend aoi is sweet and supportive, and also introduces the current rumor that fuels the arc. However, in the more recient chapters, its revealed she actually feels alone alot, despite being popular. She feels like an outcast, so i like that shes not just a one dimensional support rock. Teru, kous brother, is also a character that occasionally pops by. I honestly just like having him there for shipping purposes, and i think hanako and nene’s relationship could get real spicy if the story goes as planned in my mind. He doesnt really do much, but adds to the fun environment of the lighter parts of the manga. Mitsuba kinda annoys me so i wont discuss him, but hes a liiiiittle bit unimportant?? I dunno i just feel like he shouldnt be such a big issue. I like the bad guys, the whole brother thing is iconic but its a nice twist that they're both at the same school. Uhh, thats all i have to report but i really do like this manga. c:

Ps, the fandom is pretty cute other than tsukasaxhanako shippers,,,,,like cmon guys theyre brothers fr

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is a manga that is beloved by a bunch of my friends in real life and online, so when I heard it was getting an anime in 2020, I let my curiosity get the better of me by reading it before seeing the adaptation itself.

Excuse me if the review is poorly written compared to my other ones, I just wrote this on the fly without preparing well like the others (since I wanted to avoid spoiling much detail to the story). These are just brief thoughts.

Story/Writing (2/10)

It is a very uninteresting story that felt shoddy in terms of consistency. There were a few plot conveniences that popped up as the story progressed, and the direction itself was pretty uninteresting too for me and in the end, feels like a dreadful waste of time.

The comedy was a big miss for me too. It had its cute moments, but there were a lot of awkward spots and unfunny jokes. The anklet stuff never got me one bit.

The pacing is fine, and I admire that there is an underlying narrative for this manga (which I expected no real story at the start). But, the actual story and execution of it left me severely underwhelmed and drained so far.

Characters (3/10)

The cast for this manga was pretty dull for the most part. Full of unlikable characters and forgettable characters too.

Art (9/10)

The story wasn't beautiful, but I'll admit that the art was.

The characters looked really well-drawn, with cute and charming designs mixed with a creepy atmosphere too surrounding them. It's very interesting.

Enjoyment (1.5/10)

I normally try and best not to go with expectations in mind whenever I see an anime or read a manga, but due to how much I've heard about how amazing it was, I couldn't resist.

And I'm more disappointed in myself, for letting them get to me than by the manga itself.

Due to my expectations, the lackluster experience of this manga stung me more than I wished. This manga started well but ended up being underwhelming and even full of issues itself when I caught up by the end.

Overall, it's a manga that I can see why many would love, and I could also see it receiving rave reviews for its anime adaptation in Winter 2020. But sadly, the manga could not capture my interest and I've lost a lot of hype that I initially had for the anime when the announcement came.

It's a shame, but the manga is just a major drag where the art is the only thing of positive value. And given how many manga out there have good art nowadays, having good art isn't enough to cut it. It's very easy to see manga with great art but it's the gems that have great storytelling and characters that are much more rare to find and much more lovable to cherish. This unfortunately not coming anywhere near close to that area. Very disappointed overall.

The quality of this manga is bound to end up in the toilet, as my time got flushed down reading this.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun review
I loved every little bit of Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, but I'll admit that it is not a manga for everyone. The story is about a girl named Nene who heard that there's a ghost who grants wishes in her school. She looked for him and meets him in a haunted bathroom. The ghost is named Hanako and, through a series of unfortunate events, Nene becomes tied to this ghost and has to help him keep the other ghosts in check. The story isn't really what matters here. It's an open plot that allows for great side stories. And, at first, that's what I was thinking. The story is okay, the characters are cute, and the episodic storytelling is really good. My favorite thing about it was how it was drawn cute, but the artwork lead to creepier moments.
But as I kept reading, the story got more complicated, more dramatic, more dark, more creepy, and more epic to a point where I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. There are some actually sad moments in here. The artwork (which is some of the best art I've seen in a manga) adds to the effect of the dark and creepy moments because it looks cute. When you see some of the stuff that goes down later in the series, the contrast between the cute and the serious is so well defined. But, I don't think everyone loves stories like this. It blends a lot of generas together and, while I loved it, it's not for everyone. I say give it a shot and see if it's your kind of thing. There is an anime set to be released next month by Studio Lerche and I will certainly be watching.
