Gantz review
Gantz is a very interesting work, with a huge evolution, from characters and development of his story.
His art is well done and with many details, even though the line encompasses me a little in human beings, but it is nothing very problematic.

I believe that the thing that I felt most was hatred, hatred of the human being in a general context, for the pleasurable personality of many people, even if sometimes very forced (like gangsters or the Osaka crowd), but at the same time the chapters identify the characters on all sides, the evolution of some (like Kurono), as is the reality of the human being; with a view on both sides, that we are only insects, that we do not have but also that we are beings with feelings, beings of which they are self-conscious, even selfish. All characters are based on some other existence, some other reason besides themselves, mostly focusing on not being a problem, it is just how the author sees our dependence.

The thought about humanity, society and the universe is what makes the manga have a good note, for me; he doesn’t have a higher score for the amount of things missing, for the lack of depth in other situations also a man with power in imaginable that almost equates to the fuck equipment, and so on; it would be easier to just not have them put on the job.

I would like to comment on Kurono, that in 1/4 of the work I had agony, just reading thinking "my god this guy sucks shit", he finds himself, with the help of Katou and Tae, who through the circumstances of the fight, where they involved people, death and protection, the struggle; he remembered what it was like, he remembered the unconsciousness based on self-confidence, that even weak, deplorable, has conditions to be there, has conditions to be there, has, but was lost by the sight of horrible things is during war, and then to arrest a Tae, who always wanted the best of him, who loves him; from then on, many selfish thoughts return to his mind, most of his essence, and it ends up not being something bad anymore, because he has his things, he has his life, he has the reason to live.

Anyway, the work is very interesting, I believe it does not need 383 chapters, but ideas were shown and developed in a well done, incredible way, in parts.

Gantz review
Oh GANTZ’s the first time I know this manga is form its anime that I loved so much and ending with a lot of mystery and question, so my curiosity brought me to these manga. And what I got here was a Fantastic story more than what I or even you can ever imagine.

Well the character design of these manga is more close to the realistic people in real life, you’re not gonna find people with big eyes, big head and colorful hair or Moe character in here, but a violence and graphic picture everywhere. Because these manga is all about “Murdering Aliens”… so you’ll see a lot of scene about people “Butchering Alien” and of course a lot of “Alien Butchering People”, If you don’t like to see some “Gore” things like “Human being Dismembering to Pieces” I recommended you to don’t even dare to open this manga because I afraid it will leaves you a trauma, I mean It… but it’s all your choice…

First the story is about a High School student named Kurono who only thinks about tits and sex even in the middle of school lecture. He have a really bad personality and always insulting people in his mind, until he meets his childhood friend Katou that asking Kurono to save drunk people who have fall into the railroad, but unfortunately thee train hit and killed them. After that they wake up in a locked room with Big Black Ball called “Gantz” and other people that have same death experiences before with different way from around Tokyo. They tried everything to get out the room but nothing is succeed. Then a minutes later the black ball playing a weird song and giving the people a weapon and suit in order to kill some weird alien. They have no choice but to kill the alien, because there’s a bomb planting in inside their head and gonna blow their head if they’re not kill the alien. After the hunt clear they can come back to home, but with the bomb still planted in their head and will detonate if they talk to other people about Gantz and the Alien.

The bloody hunt still repeating until they have reach to 100 point, a score given by Gantz after one Hunt end. The hunt repeating again and again and again and again aaaaand this is The Story all about, it’s about seen a lot of alien killed, seen a lot of people killed like that repeatedly. But that what makes Gants interesting because each hunt New People with Different Characteristic gathered and New Unique Alien being encountered form the weak to the Monstrously Strong.

These manga will leaves you a lot of Mystery and makes you questioning about humanity and morality dilemma, for example like why they should kills the alien? Is the alien a bad creatures? should they save other people? What kind of people the should saves? and of course these question that asking about “is The God Really Exist?” you’ll encounter a lot of question like that when you read these manga, well what you expected it’s from Japanese the country that full with a lot of Atheist, well forgot the Religion stuffs and after all these manga is a “Gory Fun” well drawn and well structured you’ll undertand all the mystery if you manage to read all chapter of the manga.

Oh yes I forgot about Kurono the main character, after he survives a lot of Hunt he gradually change from a pervert jerky person to the more better person little by little by little or maybe a little to long it’s almost makes me hate him so much for always being an Asshole. But it doesn’t mean that the possibility of Kurono survives the Hunt is 100%, well im not gonna spoil it here…

Gantz review
Gantz is at times one of the best manga I've ever read, and at other times one of the worst manga I've ever read. So without much else I'm just going to go straight into it.

Story:
There really isn't much. A black ball transports dead people to his room at night and makes them fight aliens. In the end there is some closure as for "why" the black ball is doing this but I'll let you guys see that for yourself. A 4/10 in this category.

Art:
This is probably Gantz's biggest asset. Oku used 3D CG to help him draw some backgrounds and a few of the monsters, but most of it is handrawn, and GOD is it drawn beautifully. The characters faces are probably the weakest point in the art, as they can kind of just look like blobs, but it's all forgiven during the action scenes. The gore in this manga is just visceral and there are panels I could spend 5-10 minutes just admiring all the sliced bodies. Great shit. 8/10

Characters:
Another relatively weak point for Gantz, most of the characters are bland and don't really have much development besides getting a girlfriend and losing their virginity. In the early chapters (100) the MC, Kei, is so unbearable it might compel some readers to drop the series. It's also hard to root for Kei's girlfriend in the last arc when nearly every word she speaks is just yelling for Kei. But aside from all that there is some development and with a 400 chapter manga you do develop some level of attachment so it's not as bad as it could be. 5/10

Enjoyment:
NOW THIS IS WHAT GANTZ WAS MADE FOR! This manga is basically an extremely R-Rated Michael Bay movie. Just turn off the thinking mans cap and enjoy teenagers in black costumes killing anything that moves. I guarantee you'll be happy.

Overall:
In almost every category besides art and enjoyment, Gantz flails under its own weight. This brings a lot of points away from it, but the art and just the craziness of the story keep it from being a total disaster. If I could not give this any rating at all, or just a neutral rating that's what I would do, but sadly MAL asks for a real objective score. 5/10

Gantz review
Here we have a manga that I cannot help but loathe and love all the same. Gantz being a thrilling Seinen, Sci-fi, Action manga that would take the reader on a gory rollercoaster ride, featuring amazing battles for survival. Yet it also happens to be riddled with poor dialogue and spontaneous plot developments that may stem one's enjoyment.

It all begins as two young Japanese high school boys, meet their end by a homicidal underground locomotive. And that would have been the end for them, if this wasn't a manga. So having been semi-posthumously transported to an apartment, along with others in the same situation; they are now forced by some giant black ball, to partake in missions and kill random aliens, in what seems to be some kind of sick game.

And that is Gantz in a nutshell... a manga that can be both straight-forward and random. The plot, revolving around people forced into these high mortality mission, is simple at its core and honestly it is a bit too simple that those who yearn for more substance in their reading material, may initially be turned off by Gantz. I know I was and it wasn't until a particular mission that I got completely hooked; onto the graphic, gory, intense, vulgar manga that is Gantz. And since Gantz is so good at grabbing the readers by the balls and never letting go, it can easily get away with having some glaring issues with its story. Like how so often it seems there's little to no direction in the storyline and how readers had to journey through over 30 Volumes, to understand and get some sort of explanation regarding the overall plot of Gantz. Unfortunately the basic reasoning given, simply could not fill up all the plot-holes that were left unattended.

Yet even when littered with the kind of issues that could greatly lower the score of some lesser manga, Gantz still remains as one of my all-time favourites. Kei Kurono is a large factor in all this, which is somewhat remarkable given how much of an annoying prick he is at the start. As the story progresses, so does Kei Kurono, along with a lot of the other characters that aren't basically cannon-fodder. And that is where the mangaka does a good job. In creating perilous situations for these characters to develop and also knowing how important it is to utilize the downtime for some more character development. However even though the mangaka tries to provides us readers with an interesting collection of characters, I can only give him an A-. Simply because a lot of the dialogue he had these characters spew could be mind-numbingly stupid at times.

At least it doesn’t completely affect the overall enjoyment of the manga and it is the artwork that contributes a lot to this. The artwork can be described as a technical masterpiece, since Hiroya Oku does a fantastic job of utilizing 3D renders to create a uniform look to the world. So that both the real life & sci-fi elements look like it's all part of the same manga. Not to forget the attention detail, where even the odd blemish or decapitation looks as though at lot has been put into it. However artwork is largely a subjective matter, so what I like may not be the same as what you like.

In the end Gantz is a violent, gory, lewd but overall an enjoyable manga. However in order to enjoy it, the reader must do one simple thing, turn off their brain and accept Gantz for what it truly is... some lengthy piece of mindless entertainment. Kind of like a Michael Bay movie. If you cannot do that then you simply won't be able to ignore the numerous plot holes and the various plot elements that were shoved in, because Hiroya Oku must have watched some Western Movie/Show, which inspired him at the time (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer & 2012 comes to mind).

Gantz review
!MINOR SPOILERS!

Prologue:
Gantz is weird. If I had to use one word to describe it, however, it would be "obake" - because it doesn't know what it wants to be and it constantly changes - be it in a good or bad direction.

Story[4]:
This is Gantz's self-destruction. At the start, it's okay as it moves along it's getting weirder. It has some recovery points here and there and it gets pretty decent, but then comes forth a whole arc and you are like "Why the hell is this happening?". Plot ideas are introduced at different times and are forgotten/unexplored. Psychics and vampires are two of the things that serve a major role in that sense. The pacing is good at times and pretty drawn out at others, especially towards the last chapters/arc right up until the ending which is the opposite - unspeakably rushed. It brings some very interesting and unique aspects to the table but also carries some very dissatisfying and irritating tropes. The author also relies a lot on softcore porn, ecchi themes, and shock value.

Art[8]:
Oku Hiroya once again doesn't know for sure what he wants to do, at least this time the whole diagram is more linear - it is changing as time progresses for the better. However, there are those moments where you see a character and you start to question if they are new. Bravo, for the monster design though! I was stunned and amazed, but then I was disturbed and disgusted when the time was right, for both occasions. I can also see he used a lot of references towards bugs, insects, and the like, which to me is one the most unwelcome and troublesome themes. Backgrounds and landscapes were for the most part - beautiful and daunting/in a good way.

Character[8]:
The protagonist is a pile of excrements at the beginning. I felt not only him, the side characters but the masses were sort of an accurate portrayal of today's society but exaggerated. 80% of people involved (from the male spectrum) were thugs, rapists, gangsters, bikers, angry virgins, killers, or punks. Character growth is good, particularly with Kurono Kei, but other main characters receive little to no development at all. Women are treated, for the most part, as props and/or plot devices, and while they are partly the reason why Kurono is degenerate at the start they are also partly the reason why he becomes better later. Monsters have funny and distinctive traits but as time goes on, the mangaka focuses on a more of a shocking image rather than quirky and it becomes dull after a while. Another solid pro is that the protagonist receives the best treatment, no complaints there if only other main characters were raised better though. There is also a pretty iconic irony from Kurono's and Katou's motives and ideals, having the first follow the principles of the second for the greater good whilst the second looked up to the first.

Enjoyment[10]:
I loved Gantz and this rollercoaster became one of my favourites. I definitely dived in with higher expectations and was sort of disappointed later on. More often than not I was weirded out. I also came to the realization that this manga is very self-aware - to the point of it being funny. In addition, I found the many references to multiple different cultural and media realms very satisfying.

Afterword[7.5]:
Made for very specific audience groups. You have to go in with the right mindset - to simply get entertained, not looking for the bigger picture. If you don't have a strong gut, don't like over the top action or lots of sexual and unnecessary interactions then maybe skip this one. If you are excited though, then sit back and enjoy 13 years of publishing compiled into 383 chapters.

Gantz review
Gantz is the strangest thing I've ever read. There are so many twists and nonsensical developments that Gantz feels like 3 or 4 separate manga sown together into a Frankenstein's monster of craziness. Powering through the large plot holes was a battle, but marveling at how in the world they managed to complete this ecstasy hit of a plot was worth it.

Story:
Honestly what the in the f***? Gantz starts off as this cool, macabre, version of Men in Black, then takes a wrong turn into Hellsing territory, before finally beaching itself in Independence Day. The story isn't so much confusing as it is baffling, which weakens otherwise solid action sequences. To describe it in one sentence, it felt like I somehow missed 3 context-giving arcs and was thrown into the deep end of the pool.

Art:
Gantz is not new, the first chapter is over 10 years old, and the style reflects that era; it'll take some time to get used to it, coming from newer things. Once one does, it's not half bad, though I found some of the action sequences to be a bit hard to follow.

Character:
Kurono Kei develops tremendously as a character from his rather pathetic beginnings. Gantz counters his Deus Ex Machina determination with a brutality not usually seen outside Berserk, and it's that constant fear of death that drives the reader to care. The rest of the cast is pretty flat, not really ever developing beyond what they were presented as initially. They pretty much all fall into one of the following descriptions: arrogant asshole, sociopath, normal person, or woman.

Enjoyment:
I enjoyed Gantz because of its off-the-wall action, without that it's hard to recommend. There are better manga for character development, plot, dialogue, and frankly violence as well. The juxtaposition from the beginning and the end is second-to-none though, there is NO WAY to predict what Gantz becomes from its first chapter.

Gantz review
So Oku-sensei really likes drawing a couple of things: shit getting ruined, big tiddies, and more bizarrely old people and "ugly" crying. Unfortunately, the market for random images of shit getting fucked up along with big tiddies (never mind old people and "ugly" crying) isn't all that lucrative. It is pretty difficult to earn a steady paycheck drawing those things. However, if you become a serialized mangaka you can draw all of those things every week. The only catch is you have connect the images with something called "narrative".

Gantz is the result of Oka-sensei trying fulfill his desires by using the absolute bare minimum amount narrative required. The series is "mastabatory" and Oka-sensei freely admits (he says so in the extra pages of tankoubon). Despite this the manga was actually fairly enjoyable. Yeah, it was really stupid and ridiculous but I never really found it boring, which is impressive given its length.

The plot is terrible. Nothing explained until the very end and it is mostly "handwaved". Some stuff isn't explained at all. The manga can essentially be viewed as collection of mostly unrelated events involving shit getting totally ruined. The art is fantastic. Oku-sensei totally has his own unique style going on and I personally thinks it looks great. The man is also a master of "big anime tiddies". Seriously, I used to be a "delicious flat chest" kinda guy but now I am increasingly interested in big tiddies. To Oku-sensei's credit the main love interest has a delicious flat chest—but she is the only one. Oku-sensei's mind women are either an "A"-cup or they're a "G"-cup or larger. There are no other breast sizes in between.

Gantz is really stupid: the plot is stupid and the characters are stupid. It's stupidity is palatable because it is so absolutely shameless. Gantz doesn't really pretend to be deep or intellectual. It is just excuse for Oku-sensei to draw violence, destruction, and tiddies. And you know what? I think I am OK with that. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it is pretty readable. So despite the garbage plot and characters I am going to give it a 7/10.

Gantz review
A manga masterpiece and quite possibly Oku's Magnum Opus. Sort of blown away by finally finishing this manga, so I'll just share my input on what I found amazing.

The technical skill in the art here far outsripts many things that i've seen. I can't imagine how much work it would take for the artist to make something. As always, story comes first when enjoying something in art, but the effort that this man put into this can absolutely not be denied. Fantastic.

The manga has 3 major arcs, and they truly, truly up the scale and almost change the whole landscape of the manga. 3 phases of Gantz, and you find yourself upgrading from a close-knit survival sci-fi horror to something more, something greater.

The cynical and no-nonsense portrayal of humans in a tough situation is interesting to see. I hate cynicism, but you can't deny the truths he's trying to show, and it makes it all the more interesting because Koruno Kei at a first glance is such a pathetic main character, and so very much human.

This is undoubtedly what you'd call an 'r18' work, but I'd rather call it undiluted.

The story does indeed take a long time to switch between phases, but from the get go (perhaps first two volumes) if you're not hooked by the art and the development of the situation then this is not for you.

An amazing piece of work from Hiroya Oku, I hope to see some more spin-offs from this work (anime adaptation, movies) and especially more work from Hiroya Oku. This is the kind of manga you finish and applaud at.

Gantz review
Story: 4
The story revolves around these 2 kids who faced a unfortunate mishap in the train station, but the story as a whole moves from arc to arc without never getting the feeling of any real progression. In short you wont be reading Gantz for its story.

Art: 8
The art is pretty good, When i first saw this my thoughts where "WHOA I CANT BELIEVE SOMEONE HAVE THE TALENT TO DRAW SUCH DETAILED LOCATIONS BY HAND" The characters, guts & gore, boobs & muscle tone are well detailed. It'll leave you in Awe at times. But my only gripe is it was not drawn by hand.

Characters: 4
Characters Gantz are very typical. the main character Kei is feels somewhat like a Shonen main character his past shows how good he was @ things when he was younger & his over fearlessness gave me the overall Shonen vibe. The only reason he isn't one to the core is because it is a Seinen manga so the character can change @ any given point in time & can be put in a endless amount of traumatic experiences then other Shonen characters.
Theres also generic character archetypes in this series. The quiet strong guy, cute popular girl (In this case famous) the wimps the scheming characters & so on. Characters in this series are not a breed apart & can be seen in many other series.

Enjoyment: 7
If you can stomach half of the gore nudity and other strong content in this series its rather easy to get into. Most of the chapters can be read in 3-5 minutes because the pages don't have to much dialog and the pictures are just eye candy. The down side is you cant stay emotionally attached to the supporting characters because there most likely going to get killed off. The amount of fan service is endless i mean boobs is cool every once in a while but this series has it like every other page and it gets old quick, if i wanted to see boobs ill just watch pronz.

Overall:6
Gantz is a good series if you want a quick fix of mindless fun.
