Randou Masashi, a self-centered, brash karate star, was the victim of a horrific bus accident that left him comatose, his face terribly disfigured by extensive burns.

Genius plastic surgeon Dr. Manabe saved Randou's life and went to work on his face, gradually reconstructing it based on a photograph found in the wreckage of the bus. But in a cruel twist of fate, the photo that the doctor used as his reference was not a picture of Randou, but of Rina Kurimi, the girl whom Randou has a crush on!

Giving away a score to an anime seems a little bit pointless to me as a number really can't display how I fell about this (or any) manga, so don't be too uppity about me giving this a perfect 10. Now that being said, I do believe that this manga deserves a 10 and here's why. It isn't exactly a great story, nor is int particularly thrilling, intuectual, or gripping, in fact it isn't really even that original. No what Pretty Face is, is the perfection of the Gender Bender sub genre, and that is why it deserves a 10, as it gets a perfect score for the event it entered in.

Now the gender bender itself is a rather weird concept (even as far as anime/manga is concerned). I mean seriously, its a bit creepy that this portion of entertainment has an entire genre devoted to cross dressing / transforming into the opposite sex. That being said, it really does make for some good comedy. There is a plethora of awkward situations available, and any competent mangaka can easily get a tonne of laughs from a rather mediocre story. So I guess that's what helped make this genre so popular, because awkward boy/girl situations make for the funny times.

Well I'm 2 paragraphs in and I haven't even really said anything about pretty face, so I guess I should start the actual review. As you are aware, Pretty face has our protagonist disguised as the twin sister of the love of his life (through a series of unfortunate events), and has to play the part of sister in order to help her along through life. The plot is, well interesting and told very well, but isn't going to wow the populous. But at the same time, I doubt you went into this manga expecting to be wowed by a deep and involving plot. There is a lot of filler, and the ending is (slight spoiler alert) very unfufilling, but it holds together well and is enjoyable to read. The art is on par with just about every other big shonen jump manga out there, but doesn't add or subtract anything from the overall enjoyment.

The characterization is what you really go into this manga for (well no, you go for the humor really, but characterization is important for that). Our protagonist, Randou, is a boy now trapped in a girls body after an unfortunate accident. The whole body change part is rather forced, and you won't ever believe that it could possibly happen, but the author really does a good job of helping the reader to sympathize with Randou. You really do feel that he is a good guy deep down, who's just trying to help his crush Rina (kinda like a Japanese version of Mrs. Doubtfire). The rest of the cast is a colourful bunch that all have their distinct moments and personalities. There is a great deal of growth for each character, and you feel that good ol' warm fuzzy feeling deep inside yourself every time one of them overcomes the challenge they were undertaking.

Overall, Pretty Face really does do the gender bender exactly how it was meant to be. A lot of awkward but funny humor, while never over stepping the boundary tooo far (though it gets close at times...), with a cast of likable and most importantly, relatable characters. Randou really makes you think "Gee, if I ever get stuck in the body of a member of the opposite sex, I hope I could act as well as he did." Really, if your into this sorta thing, and don't go into it expecting anything other than humor and a story that ever so slightly draws at your heart strings, then you'll probably love Pretty Face, as it truly is great at what its supposed to do.

Imagine being a guy that is involved in a horrific traffic accident. You wake up from a year long coma and everyone thinks your dead but what’s worse is that you have a girl's face.

That’s the basic setting for this hilarious Gender Bender, Romantic, Comedy. The stupid story for Pretty Face started incredibly well, as most of the guys reading this will be able to understand how Randou (male protagonist) feels to be forced into this situation. After the initial beginning, the story just becomes a bunch of random events about Randou trying to keep his true identity hidden. This can be pretty difficult when there’s a worrisome thing between his legs and it leads to some absurd comedy.

The characters involved in the story are your typical batch that are found in certain shounen, romance manga but the one the stands out the most has to be Randou (Yuna). As a guy reading this, I could definitely understand how Randou must feel, being in these kinds of situations.

With a great story, great comedy and great characters this manga was somewhat let down by its mediocre artwork. When not much was happening it was okay however when there’s a lot of action, on a page, it can be a challenge to visualize the scene.

Overall Pretty Face proved to be a very enjoyable manga and is probably one of the best in the Gender Bender genre. No matter how unbelievable the story can get, it always does a good job making these seem convincing, like how only Randou’s face is a girl but the rest of the body is his. Well solely as a comedy this manga is a must read but like many other Rom/Coms, but the romance barely plays any part in the story.

I was looking for mangas to read and that's how I found this. I read it and here is my opinion on it.

Story:9/10
The story is a bit a new take as Rando got the face of the sister of Rina who she has a crush on. When she found him, she mistake him as her long lost sister and now he must take her place and try to find her real sister. It is laugh out loud hilarious as the jokes are really well put together. While it takes that shonen boy stereotype it works. While chapters are mostly filler they are the good kind and does help the story in some way. Now if I have anything bad to say it would be the ending as it did give some closer but not enough. Story is well entertaining.

Art:9/10
For art its the typical shonen art. But I like the way how the expressions on characters faces as they are really funny to see. I don't know why but the eyes kinda looks like moe eyes when I look at it. This does not affect the score, its just a claim. The character looks well enough in design as it show the artist did put some care. So in conclusion the art is great.

Characters:10/10
For character I think Rando is the best. While he is the typical mean guy protaganaist, he has to be a girl and to him that a challenge to do. The rest of the cast is likable and enjoyable in their own right. The perverted surgeon is very funny to see how he tries to make him as a girl for his sick fantasies. and Rina does show care for her sister as she has a good relationship with her. So character are a nice bunch.

Enjoyment:10/10
I'm glad I found this and I recommend this for those who like gender bender, ecchi, shonen type mangas.

Overall:10/10 Everybody needs to read this

Pretty Face (manga) 5/6/6/6/6

First things first. My "reviews" system is explained on a blog entry. Which can be found through my profile.

✦Story✦
Again.. it's not a damn gender bender. Slap a girl face on a boy and suddenly it's a gender bender?

Anyhow it's a romantic gag Manga that can't be taken serious even with the drama it offers. It simply felt rather standard romcom with a very lazy approach of "gender bending" element. Although it had some cute moments, plenty of fair enough fanservice and some drama. It still felt rather bland, average and quite a lackluster on various reasons. I simply weren't impressed enough with how the story went, how weakly drama was presented and rather disappointing conclusions.

✦Art✦
Good enough, nice panty shots. Nothing else to add.

✦Character✦
Delinquent MC and kind girl love interest. With various amount of rather solid stereotypical set of side characters. Can't say I disliked nor liked characters. It was mostly either "don't care" or "eh.. I guess he/she is okay."

I would love to say that characters had solid development, outcome and relationships.. but all of it felt rather bland and dull. Basically the sense of jokes/gags and the drama there wasn't simply my cup of tea.

✦Enjoyment & Overall✦
No idea why I added it to plan to read or when, but it was there for some reason. Nevertheless it's essentially a gag romcom with lazy drama and rather loosely self-proclaimed gender bender story. But in the end it was simply a little cute vanilla love story, that was mostly just dull.

Story
"Pretty Face" follows a tradition of absurd manga storylines, such as 'Tuxedo Gin and A.I. Love You," that have never been adapted as an anime. Regardless, these absurd romantic comedies, "Pretty Face" included contribute greatly to the genre of comics known as anime. Thanks to Yasuhiro Kano, the author, do we now fear bus accidents for more reason than just death, could we really become a member of the opposite gender because of such an event? Kano-sensei says, "YES!"

Art
Drawing quality in this series is good but not extrodinary. Many character designs seem generic, in fact i could argue that they all have the same face with different hair pieces, and I'm not just talking about the twins. Despite this, many of the characters are very cute. Also, fight scenes are done very well, whenever Randou/Yuna creams someone I really feel the pain. He/she is very strong...

Character
The characters themselves do at times follow typical manga formulas but overall are great. Randou is interesting because he has to become a woman, in more aspects than he'd like. The transformation from fumbling over bra hooks to having to remind himself he has a penis is a real journey. Rina is a better example of a generic character. She is your typical girl who obsesses over those she cares about more than herself (See Aoi-chan/ Ai Yori Aoshi). it does get to the point where it is a bit annoying but she has her little charms. the real appeal behind Rina is her relationship with her, or at least who she think is her sister, Yuna, who is actually Randou. it's great to see how intended sisterly love can be misinterpreted. poor Randou...

Overall
"Pretty Face" is a great series to read casually. It's mostly composed of short little stories that at the same time warm your heart and tickle your funny bone [and another bone if you catch my drift ;)]. I definitely think anyone could enjoy it if they are a fan of the genre. it's also a great way to introduce younger people to manga.

Well here I am for my second review. Please direct all shotgun slugs to the person standing just to my left, thank you.

I first heard about this manga a rather long time ago. Back before it was out in an english format there was a dude associated with the Megatokyo webcomic translating it to a script form. So about a week ago I saw it on the shelf at my "local" Chapters (I forget what the us equivalent is) and I picked up a volume... That said, the actual review!

Story: The whole base concept here is that a very violent, egotistical, balls to the wall prick guy (Rando) with a god complex gets involved in a bus accident and has his face burned beyond all recognition. He wakes up from a coma two years later and finds that a plastic surgeon fixed his face using a picture he'd had in his wallet, of the girl he liked (Rina). He then runs into said girl and well, starts posing as her long lost twin sister (Yuna)... partially because someone else was also burnt beyond recognition and got tagged as his real self... and deceased. There's a main story through the whole thing about searching for the real sister and that one I did like. It also does a few side stories and some of them are a bit over used while others had a nice twist put onto them. (ie the 'winning a trip to a hot spring' that every other anime/manga does)

Art: I liked the art in this. It's consistent, at least it's consistent at what it's doing. :p I don't really know what else I can say... aside from maybe most of the emotions in this make use of the 'chibi' style... I'm not sure if that's the proper name. I'll also point out that while there's no real nudity there are a few instances of boobs. The covers are also very nicely drawn but may lead one to believe it's a pretty shoujo type manga... which it isn't.

Character: I rated this a seven for one reason only. There's a story arc where RandoYuna visits another town and there's a set of characters there who're exactly the same as the ones from wherever it is the story usually takes place. Exactly the same right down to names... While I know it's supposed to be a funny gimmick thing it struck me as 'oh so you couldn't come up with three random people'.

Enjoyment: Well, if you like a good comedy with a touch of violence and more than a little bit of fanservice you'll probably like this.

Overall: I really have no idea... As the numbers suggest I really liked it, the storyline was good, nothing epic but it did a few things different... and took a few over used story gimmicks and gave them a bit of a twist. The art was nice, characters were good and had some progression...

Summary: Masashi Randou was enjoying his ordinary yankee school life, til he got in a car crash which horribly disfigured his face. In order to save his life, he was transfer to a private doctor, Manabe, thanks to him he got his face back, but not the face he had before, but the face of the girl he loves. There's more to the story, but I'll leave it there otherwise I might spoil the whole story, and I want you to enjoy the series as I've did.

Story (9): I didn't like the story summary of this manga if we're being honest, so I kept on putting this manga on hold. It's only now that I've read one chapter of the manga to see if it's any good, and soon one chapter became all 53 chapters in 2 days. I usually don't like gender bender stories much, because I just can't get to seeing the main character as a girl or vice versa, and it just looks like a yaoi behind the scenes. However this manga still does keep the concept of a boy in a girl's body, in this case face, which makes it kinda stale for some people because it's just the same gender bender story all over, but Pretty Face does it in a way where it's more relatable, comedic, and heartwarming and I advice everyone to read this manga atleast once, because it's a shame this manga has a score lower than 8 on MAL. There's one thing I want to say, the story seemed to had a rushed ending due to it getting the axe, which is kinda sad, I wanted to see read more.

Art (7): The art is good enough, that's all I can say.

Characters (8): It seems if the character needed more depth, but the manga ended abruptly as soon as they were going to get more development, so as it is now... they're good enough, no bad character I found on this manga yet as it stands.

Enjoyment (9): I feel sorry for keep on skipping this manga, and I really wish this manga were to keep on going more than 53 chapters. I don't like the fact that this manga is around the 7.7 range, if anything it's an 8 reaching around a 9. However that's just my opinion, I hope you give this manga a shot and enjoy it as much as I did.

Mini Rant: Darn the publisher whoever gave this series the axe, this would've been a great 90 chapter series! ~ Shaney @ 69th Street
