Oyasumi Punpun review
If a story that depicts real depression, family dysfunction, selfish human nature, mundane everyday life, cult sounds like something you can stomach go ahead and read this.

The struggle of the characters here are very real to me because most of their situation is caused by their own decision. More often or not when I look back at some of the bad moments in my life, the root can be traced to my own poor decision and under estimating the consequences of my actions. Which is why the story in Oyasumi PunPun really connects with me. Some may say it is unrealistic because of the string of bad things to keeps on happening. But an individual psyche is formed from the people they surround themselves with. So if you are brought up in an abusive household be it physical or verbal chances are, you will replicate similar behavior.

Inio Asano art is top notch here. From the characters design to the environment that he added from real photos to manga page its amazing. But more importantly the art here is to serve the story. Like a character that is down on their worst moment surrounded by a busy city environment that doesn't give a second thought on the characters struggle. It really struck me as something similar faced back in college. I really enjoyed Oyasumi PunPun not just on the drawing but how well it served the story and theme.

Oyasumi PunPun is a coming of age story that stretches into adulthood in an uncensored format. Its a story of how stubborn people can be to prove a point that ultimately drags themselves into a horrible life. So it is not a happy story, but I think its worth your time to checkout.

Oyasumi Punpun review
I never read anything that depressing like Oyasumi Punpun before. The dark side of the manga is so powerful, when reading it,you will also been affected by it.You may feel disgust, bad and very hard to follow the story, but it definitely one of the best psychological manga I ever read.

The manga topic is so open & mature,it contain some topic that not everyone willing to discuss like rape, killing, alcoholic, abusing, sex, depression, dysfunctional family or relationships & etc.

Almost every characters in this manga, rarely have characters development, but rather all of them have self-destructive. The story of the manga can be worse chapter by chapter, and when I read it I just can't guess & imagine the next tragedy, and that is it that this manga make me wanna read more and more.

The plot usually turn up to be worse that it precious,so basically I 'll be surprised & hooked when reading the next plot. The main protagonist is punpun shows us that a pure ,kind-hearted person can be turning to an asshole or psycho coz by the bad environment ,society & people.

And the manga shows that people usually treat their closet people bad but very good when treat stranger.People always shows the negative side or complaining to their lover one .And mostly time don't show the true feeling and lie about them, and people will regrets it when they losing it.

Usually most of the manga will be written to
fantasy,cool,family-friendly world to let us escaping from reality and relax. But Oyasumi punpun is just a cool-hearted,cruel,negative story,it falling us than some people always suffering from living, living is very pain. Some people just don't have luck for their whole life and always misfortunes their whole life.Maybe people have working hard enough and the luck just not around then.

Conclusion:The manga is a MASTERPIECE,ever u don't feel good while reading,coz it's not our usually manga , but it's don't make it a bad manga ,& actually it's a very
GOOD SHIT!

Oyasumi Punpun review
When I first read this in 2017, it disgusted me and I rated it a 1, thinking that it's a story targeted at adults who're somehow proud of their shitty lives. Time has either broadened my view on life, or I've become such an adult.

The character to the story to the art, the author has really done everything to get his feelings across. Sometimes I just stare at a panel and wonder how the author managed to do that. Everything in this story is a reflection of reality, it's just not a direct reflection. It's a reflection distorted in such a way that all the ugliness is magnified (you can mainly see that in the side characters, who are clearly caricatures). It's Punpun's view of this world. It may differ from mine, or maybe yours, but we can more than clearly recognize it.

Since there are already a lot of general reviews, I want to skip that and give my analysis of specific parts of the story. From now on there may be SPOILERS (though not huge).

-My favorite character is Punpun's mom. Her inability to show love for her son isn't because she doesn't love him nor because she doesn't know the importance of it, but because of stubbornness. And stubbornness sounds childish ("stop being so stubborn"), but sometimes it's really something uncontrollable. She has abused Punpun throughout his life, and now showing love is like lowering herself and showing vulnerability. No matter how logical it seems that saying "sorry" and "I love you" is the right thing, it's just impossible sometimes. That tragic stubbornness can be traced back to her childhood, in which she had the responsibility of bringing up her little brother while bearing the sexualization of the kids around her. The weight of all that made her stubborn, or rather "strong-willed". It also made her lack love and desperate to be cared for. She could only find that care in offering the body she was sexualized for through her childhood. In the end, she didn't find a family to receive that care from, which causes her to break down, releasing the pain on her son. A stupid woman, but that stupidity is inevitable.

-The author's choice to draw Punpun and his family as penguins somehow made them more understandable. Partly because the author has no limits with showing their emotions by changing their design, partly because they are removed of their human shells.
Punpun's design changes based on Punpun's mentality. I can barely remember when the first drastic change was (was it the triangle?), but it pains me to realize how he stayed a white penguin throughout his abusive childhood. No matter how tragic life is, when we were young we could find happiness everywhere, even if it's only very small. Now, it's sometimes nowhere to be found.

-I didn't like the "pre-ending" storywise, the part where he ran away with Aiko. It suddenly felt so rushed, but maybe that's due to my inability to relate to the situation.
But I did like Punpun's change in behavior. His dreams as a child have become faded. He has become like the people who made his life (this manga) so f*cked up since childhood. Aren't we all in a never-ending cycle of mass production in this society, as society molds kids into adults in similar ways? Haven't we all become someone we used to detest?
Why do we even have children? Can children of miserable people even be happy, since they'll mainly be influenced by their parent's misery? We keep taking part in the production of misery solely due to tradition.

-I did like the ending for a few reasons:
1)I somehow really liked it when we saw Punpun turning back to a white penguin at the crosswalk, waving. He'll probably never be fine, but he's better now.
2) It touched upon the futility of individuals. Nothing changes in the end, not due to Punpun's experiences, not due to Pegasus' actions. The universe keeps moving forward.
3) We view the world through the eyes of another character (let's call him A). A's world is still the same as Punpun's, but it's clearly less dark. We all live in the same world, but we view it differently. Punpun's world might be a bit unfamiliar, but it's definitely the same world we live in. At the very end we see children in primary school, discussing the same things Punpun and his friends discussed back then. Somehow, through Punpun's eyes it all seemed f*cked up, but through the eyes of A it's all so innocent.
This world is much darker than we think, but life has hope as long as you believe in a brighter world.

In conclusion, this is a wonderful manga through which the author is able to convey complex emotions through inner dialogues and pictures. Right now I only wish for a future where everyone is required to go a psychologist, funded by the state.

Oyasumi Punpun review
If you are thinking of reading Oyasumi Punpun then please be aware that there are many triggering scenes. I'm going to put some TW here that might include minor spoilers.

TW: abuse, rape, suicide

By the way, there is going to be mention of rape in my review.
Okay! Let's start.

My feelings are all over the place right now, I'm not quite sure how I feel about Oyasumi Punpun.

The first volumes of Oyasumi Punpun were truly great, the story was moving in a nice pace that suited the wholesome kids romance atmosphere and the very melancholy scenes of the reality. The characters were all very relatable and made me want to reflect on myself, I hated how much I related to Punpun, his mother and his uncle. I hated how I could relate to all of their bad characteristics such as Punpun's intrusive thoughts. The first, I don't know 3 or 4 volumes? Have made me feel very empty and afraid to face myself and the reality I live in. I would say that reading these few volumes was weirdly enjoyable

Anyhow, I was kind of disappointed to see where the story lead to, the story of the last few volumes seemed a bit rashed as if the author tried to make it really dramatic thinking the readers would be more thrilled to read on. I also disliked Punpun's change, even though I knew that Punpun was going to get worse since his thoughts got scarier, I didn't expect him to get so out of character. The last few volumes were not what I expected, I didn't enjoy them as much as the first volumes.

I don't really know how to describe the ending, I personally think that the ending could have been a lot more better than it was. It's not like I dislike it but I can't really say that I like either.

One of the things I really hated was the huge amount of misogyny. I'm well aware that this manga is suppose to be dark and grudge but the amount of misogynistic comments ( especially made by grown-up Punpun) doesn't sit right with me, I also hated how the author "normalised" rape. Punpun casually walking down the street thinking "this girl is wearing a short shirt so she wants to be raped" was just disgusting, when he then went out to find her because he wanted to rape her left me dumbfounded, I felt like dropping the manga.
Before you think " the manga is suppose to be unpleasant blah, blah", I already know that, it made me quite sad that the things in that manga were all very real in the world we live in.

In conclusion, Oyasumi Punpun and I have love-hate relationship. Since I don't what to criticise it much, I must say that the art style is beautiful and I love that the protagonist is a bird.

Oyasumi Punpun review
tl;dr: A masterpiece that is definitely worth reading, but one that will cause a lot of pain.

This manga is an incredibly emotional ride that tells the coming of age story of a boy named Punpun. However, his coming of age story isn't the normal type full of happiness where he overcomes difficulties and grows into a fine man, but rather one where he is hurt and can never seem to get over his pain. It's quite a long ride, starting from him in elementary school and ending with him as an adult, wherein it shows him in each stage of his life. He has connections with a number of characters throughout this, various family and friends, who all have stories of their own. And though there are side stories that focus on these characters, many of them being interesting in their own right, ultimately the focus remains mainly on Punpun. The story shows how all the various negative external influences end up pushing a normal boy into becoming something much darker. He isn't a bad person exactly, well mostly, but rather someone uncaring and really hard for others to get along with. All of this is shown off incredibly well in part due to the art style. Everything other than Punpun and his family is drawn in a somewhat realistic art style. It looks pretty good and is good at establishing atmosphere and tone, especially in terms of facial expressions, along with good pacing in terms of panel use. Punpun on the other hand is drawn as a minimalist bird, though he changes to other forms as it goes on. There is a very strong contrast here that looks quite strange at first, but is strangely easy to get used to. This disconnect between Punpun and the rest of the world really puts him in a special place in terms of how the viewer views him as opposed to everything happening around him, and ultimately, I think helps tremendously in helping to convey what the author was intending to. There's a lot I feel the author wanted to say, but at the same time I feel it's really hard to put into words because these things are subtle and somewhat nebulous, though that certainly doesn't mean that the messaging was lost as I believe the manga had the exact impact intended. Still, I should mention, that even though the story was of incredibly high quality, even though it is nothing short of a masterpiece, the despair still hurts. The matter with Aiko hurt me tremendously. By the end of the manga, all I really wanted was for a certain character to be saved, not just physically, but emotionally, for her to find happiness. And hence, her ending being nothing but despair hurt, it hurt a lot, to the point I was screaming in frustration. That scene is going to haunt me for a long time.

Oyasumi Punpun review
This manga is spectacular.
Story: 10/10
The story is definitely not predictable and, in my opinion, avoids many of the clichés that are common in darker manga. The story mostly follows the main character, Punpun Onodera, as he comes to terms with his past trauma and his inability to escape his past. There are also a few side stories that I found just as interesting as the main plot line. The story had enough consistency to keep it grounded, while containing enough twists and turns to keep it very exciting.
Art: 10/10
The art is amazing. From the transformative nature of the main character to the celestial backdrop of the characters' tragedy, I found myself marveling at various panels throughout the manga. I also loved the real and over exaggerated nature of all the normal human characters within the manga. Asano has a way of conveying some aspect of the character through their very image and design.
Character: 10/10
Each character within Goodnight Punpun has a different flaw or past they must come to terms with. Whether they fail or succeed is up to them. I found myself being connected to each and every character within the manga--all of their motives feel real. I can put myself in their shoes and draw upon my own past experiences to understand their actions within the story. Each character also goes through different arcs and emotional journeys, mirroring the real world in yet another way. The characters within Goodnight PunPun truly portray the darkness that can exist in the real world.
Enjoyment: 10/10
I truly loved this manga. Every moment I read it, I felt some sort of connection, however minor, with each character's struggle. Asano has a way with creating characters that are realistic enough to relate to, yet fictional enough to beget an extremely enjoyable and though provoking story.
Goodnight Punpun is the harrowing tale of a young boy growing up burdened by his past. I would completely recommend it (although prepare for a dark and tragic story).

Oyasumi Punpun review
-SERIES SUMMARY, NO SPOILERS-
I have just completed Oyasumi Punpun, and I think this is one series that will stick with me forever. In the series, you follow the life of Punpun Onodera, represented by a cartoon bird from age 11 to his 20's. You follow his social life, his sexual life, everything. This manga is truly one of the bleakest, yet most relatable stories about life I've ever seen. It gripped me, and pulled me along to the very end, and I'm so unbelievably happy I did. If you ever have the time, read this manga.

-MILD TO HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD-
I believe Punpun is one of the most interesting manga characters ever. From his beginning, to about age 18, he is the most complete caricature of human life ever. He's not perfect, and it shows. He deals with depression, regret, hope, everything. It's not watered down by any anime tropes, it's truly just life. However, I think in his 20's- his spiral into madness, is where it gets very interesting- and very disturbing. For most of the series, you can sympathize with what he does. He makes stupid but realistic ones. However, I think that spiral into madness is the most scary because it's a bleak outlook on what anyone could turn into. Shaped, warped, and destroyed by the constant belittlement of life. That entire arc with Aiko at the end is....terrifying, to put it simply. You stop being able to sympathize with him and watch as the little boy you read and related to in the beginning chapters has turned into a monster. There has been nothing like this manga that has made me feel so empty inside. Although I'm happy I read it, that experience will never, ever leave me.

Goodnight, Punpun.

Oyasumi Punpun review
Before I start my review I want to warn people this is NOT a light reading. It includes themes of rape, violence, addiction, bullying, etc. So proceed at your own risk.

Story(10):
The manga is the life journey of Punpun, our main character. It shows us his struggles growing, from childhood to adulthood.
His perspective towards life and future change according to other characters that he interacts with.
They also influence the story directly and all have an important message to the reader. So all of them are crucial.
Generally speaking ,the manga approaches life (punpun's but also others) with a very depressing yet realistic view.
All topics of the story are showed in a very raw, honest and straight forward way.

Art(10):
The art style is fundamental for how briliant this masterpiece is.
Punpun wasn't drawed cartoon-ish for no reason. And the rest wasn't drawed in a realistic way for no reason either.
Every aspect of the manga, incluiding art style is very well thought and very important so the reader understands the message.
In terms of personal enjoyment, the realistic side of the author amazed me. Is beautiful.

Characters(10):
You will hate and you will love all of them. You will relate and think they're absolutly idiotic. But is part of the journey and I can tell you in the end, you'll find yourself thinking they were all very important to the entire picture.
All of them are also very well written and solid characters, with very good dialogue and backstories.

Enjoyment(10):
When I understood what topics would be presented to me I was VERY skeptical.
As someone that suffers from mental illness I went "yikes" at first.
Is very easy to be unrealistic writing about it, or even romanticing it.
However Mr Asano did an outstanding job , from start to finish.
He presented it in a straight forward way, forcing you to think about it, to ask yourself your opinion, how you would deal with it.
The way each topic is talked about changes. This thanks to the diversity of characters, with unique personalities and backstories. Contributing so, to the manga in a fundamental way.
If you want a very genuine, extremly well written, accurate way about how mental illness is, I recommend the manga 100%.
I simply warn you once more, is not a light reading.

Oyasumi Punpun review
Over the last decades, a lot of authors have become a inspiration for the manga industry. Asano Inio is a good example of this, with Solanin, Nijigahara Holograph, Oyasumi PunPun or one of his recent works Umibe no Onnanoko. Particulary, Oyasumi PunPun is considered one of his most influential works and it marks a before and after in the history of manga.

If you are acquainted with Inio´s works, you should know what the initial idea of the story is. PunPun and his family are the main characters on this story. At the first view the most remarkable aspect is the appearance of the Onodera Family, they resemble a bird or a cartoon but despite this, people see them like a normal person although his appearance is drastically different. PunPun aspect will change according to his mental state and his emotions. But it doesn´t mean story isn´t realistic, it's curiously just the opposite. Aside of this aspect, the design of the rest of characters is very detailed ( Their design is conditioned to how they are feeling in that moment) and the setting is beautiful with a lot of landscapes which are marvelous and depressing at the same time which demonstrates how masterful Asano Inio is.

The main point of this story is the adolescence of PunPun and his friends. It is a realistic vision of a bunch of youngsters who do not know what the future holds but must face reality and overcome it. After his old love had to be transferred to another school, PunPun meet Aiko Tanaka, a girl who has just transferred to his school. Punpun fall in love Aiko and both started to be very good friends. PunPun will be converted from an innocent and imaginative boy to a boy more confidence, who is decided to make Aiko happy.

Aiko will be the determination of PunPun´s behaviour, because in every moment of his life, his decisions will be conditioned by Aiko's safety who, in her youth, is worried about the future of the mankind, which is going to disappear. She grows on punpun the wish of being an astronaut so they could leave Earth together in order to protect Aiko from all the harmful things of this world (although they will part ways at some point in the manga)

Along the entire story, we will witness PunPun's maturity, experimenting new aspects of their life, which bit by bit will forge PunPun´s personality, including violence genre (Family issues), alcohol problems as a way to get away from reality, a lot of part-time jobs and new experiences such as experimenting true love and the influence of media and religious sects. Soon we will see a new PunPun, wandering in a disappointing world, where the only light is aiko (Although also interacts with other girls throughout history). Despite this, PunPun sometimes doesn´t take the right decision and generally is considered as an imperfect character who regrets his decisions in life and continues to question himself.

For all of this, it´s so difficult to identify yourself with the main characters because the majority of them act in a unusual way which may be considered non-moral (Punpun himself is a good example of this).

The story is not just centered in Punpun, also we will see a group of episodes starred by PunPun´s uncle, Sachi the artist, a religious sect and Seki and Shimizu( who can see the god of poop), a pair of old high school.

One of the main points of this story is a continuous misanthropy and critic to a human genre. PunPun have an important existential crisis and the manga is a critic of every aspect of the life which is shown. None of the characters are afraid of showing themselves as they are which reinforces the realistic point of view. It is a truly slice of life manga. At first it could be considered as a comedy but then you will realize that is a drama, mostly noticed after the PunPun's childhood. Also you will see a religious- supernatural aspects, whose main setting is an special entity called God who is probably one of the most important characters, because he represents our inners desires, the ones which we need to accomplish but we dare not.

After reading all this ( I wait so) , Oyasumi PunPun is without a doubt, a dramatical and depressing manga, but at the same time, is an slice of life combined with romance and psychological themes which makes it worth to read. Also is one of the most famous mangas from Asano Inio, what are you waiting for reading it?
